Isn't allowing the porn industry to be able to use your hardware crucial for widespread adoption? Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the fact that Betamax and HDDVD did this was one of the factors for their loss of market share?

[–] DharmaCurious@startrek.website 84 points 9 months ago (1 children)

There's an excellent video by technology connections in which he mentions this. Turns out, sort of not true. That said, in the modern day, that 100% is gonna be the case, IMHO. Porn flows like wine anymore, and people aren't going to want to adopt some weird pornless tech.

[–] wesker@lemmy.sdf.org 54 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Porn flows like wine

I find that it doesn't necessarily flow freely, but rather is expelled in short bursts

[–] HjFUN@lemmy.world 31 points 9 months ago

There are exercises for that, to build up range

in the early-mid 90s online porn pushed tech to the limit in so many ways. first spammers were serious porn hustlers. from my pov of watching the interwebs develop, porn pushed the multimedia boundaries. and here we are again.

[–] shalafi@lemmy.world 29 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Porn also pushed the advent of secure online monetary transactions.

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 17 points 9 months ago

ha! that reminds me, i had a friend tell me he had to modify their database because they never expected a single transaction to reach that amount. a lot of deep pockets came out of the woodwork back then

[–] RIP_Cheems@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

Your not wrong. After all, that's why Google blew up, and Nintendo.

[–] LazaroFilm@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

According to DVD, yes.

[–] trustnoone@lemmy.sdf.org 24 points 9 months ago (1 children)

ChatGPT/OpenAI also doesn't allow for AI generated girlfriends as part of their usage policy.

We truly are living in the worse timeline

[–] Doombot1@lemmy.one 6 points 9 months ago

[–] Fuck_u_spez_@sh.itjust.works 4 points 9 months ago

Thank you very much Tim Apple

[–] casmael@lemm.ee 73 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Tbh I can’t think of any applications for this product that don’t involve porn

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 24 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I play elite dangerous in VR as well as several other sims. (Including a proper training sim for RC aircraft with a connected TX.)

If you go full hog with physical switches and everything positioned perfectly…. It can be extremely immersive technology. Like train surgeons immersive.

[–] ElderWendigo@sh.itjust.works 32 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Porn sounds cheaper and less embarrassing to explain to a date.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

Not really. She knows I'm a nerd. Not that I can afford a set up like that, but, I wouldn't mind it.

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 7 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Train surgeons does sound pretty extreme and immersive, but I feel like I'm about to be disappointed by a typo

If you want porn get an Android

[–] Eggyhead@kbin.social 17 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Not even the phone. Just a real, literal android.

[–] spookedbyroaches@lemm.ee 3 points 9 months ago

Or literally anything else with a screen

[–] hightrix@lemmy.world 37 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Yet.

Give the porn industry time.

[–] Labotomized@lemmy.world 25 points 9 months ago (3 children)

Im so confused why this wouldn’t work and I didn’t see anywhere in the article the actual reason. Can anyone explain it better? Can you not just play a vr video file? Is it blocking the sites? I’m just confused.

[–] ylai@lemmy.ml 28 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (3 children)

My understanding is that it allows you to play planar video from a website, but not (yet?) side-loaded videos that are spherical/hemispherical. And the latter is what these people really wanted for this application.

[–] Die4Ever@programming.dev 35 points 9 months ago (1 children)

side-loaded videos

Fucking Apple lol, just let people play video files, this should be basic minimum functionality

[–] Pistcow@lemm.ee 15 points 9 months ago (2 children)

I mean, they just got type-c. Remember when the first iPhone couldn't send picture texts?

I saw another comment earlier that said its easy to switch on WebXR, which enables VR Porn, it's just disabled by default.

[–] 69420@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

these people

lol, right 😉

[–] Emperor 5 points 9 months ago

You know, all those other unwholesome, dirty people who aren't me.

[–] finestnothing@lemmy.world 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

They'll just monitor everything you watch or do on it and detect anything NSFW.

I wish this was a /s but I can definitely see it happening since they'd have to ban the whole Internet to keep any sites with NSFW content from playing

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 2 points 9 months ago

Nah They already have quest and that unit blows up high rez porn shorts first time you boot it. It's too lucrative they just want the optics here

It works, you just have to adjust a few settings.

Apps > Safari > advanced > features flags

And you need to turn these 3 things on WebXR Device API, WebXR Augmented Reality Module, and WebXR Gamepads Module.

[–] Ironfist@sh.itjust.works 24 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

aaawwww... (closes wallet)

[–] Blackmist 20 points 9 months ago (4 children)

Well that's shit. Even my OG Rift can do that.

Pretty sure there's an open standard for VR as well (WebXR), Chrome supports it but Firefox doesn't.

[–] RaoulDook@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

Lots of smartphones can do VR video too, when you add a set of VR goggles that fit it. Just plain goggles with no electronics that hold the phone in front of lenses that you can strap on your face. It's simple enough that it should be possible on any VR display system actually.

I'm confused, are there no media player apps for the apple headset? Any such app would allow for playing vr videos
