A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. A showerthought should offer a unique perspective on an ordinary part of life.

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. Avoid politics
    • 3.1) NEW RULE as of 5 Nov 2024, trying it out
    • 3.2) Political posts often end up being circle jerks (not offering unique perspective) or enflaming (too much work for mods).
    • 3.3) Try c/politicaldiscussion, volunteer as a mod here, or start your own community.
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct

In the sidebar you will see that rule 3 is "Avoid politics", as of US election day.

Political posts represent the vast majority of the moderation burden. They tend not to be the fun/quirky/whimsical/goofy/nonsense kind of posts that people enjoy from c/showerthoughts.

Maybe we should make a c/drivewaythoughts or a c/doomscrollingthoughts to fill the void.

The rule will begin 0200 UTC Nov 6, 2024 to be exact, you have 2 minutes, go ham.

As always I'm open to feedback.

EDIT: While I'm editing the sidebar. I will remove the "Be good to others" rule because it's redundant to the opening paragraph of Lemmy's Code of Conduct.

EDIT 2: If you want to give anonymous feedback you can report this post and give your feedback in the report. It's anonymous to me at least.

EDIT 3: Here are some good counter points to the new rule:

  1. This arguably offers new perspective on an ordinary topic but it's pretty political: https://lemmy.world/post/21997198
  2. This post was very popular and remained civil: https://lemmy.world/post/21925102

Suppose 90% of people don't upvote or downvote.

An okay post/comment with 10 votes is thus likely seen by 100 people. With proximity to a better-voted comment, chances bring it to 300+. What people are they, what's in their heads?

  • Skim-it-over-and-ignore group. Maybe the topic sentence didn't hook them.
  • Mildly-(dis)agree-but-don't-comment group. I've mildly agreed to heavily downvoted comments before. Not enough to move my imperious thumb.
  • Future group. The other day, I read an ancient comment with 1 upvote, and found it kinda interesting. Who's to say that this sub's 1000 readers a day don't scroll down to the fiftieth post in the feed? It'll take over a week to rotate my post out of the queue -- if readers are reasonably non-unique, I could break 2000 or 3000 reads by the time it does.

Only the normal distribution's tails vote. But people still see me, even if I have 1 meaningless button press logged next to my textbox. And these peeps ain't Reddit bots -- they're real, they philosophize, they have lives that still guide their thumbs up screens.

Next thought: do I want the future people seeing the shit I post?

Ehh their problem B)

I'm on a weekend vacation and forgot to bring my tea and the international grocery didn't have it, so I settled for Darjeeling. I can barely notice the difference. It's so subtle that it might as well just be a different tea brand.

In Moana Heihei is shown in the scene near the beginning when Moana is like 2 or 3, and she is 16 when she goes out on her maiden voyage. So Heihei is like a 13-15 year old chicken for that trip. But supposedly Heihei is in Moana 2 which takes place 3-4 years later, so that chicken is now somewhere between 16 - 19.

If there is a Moana 3, Heihei will likely be very close to being older than "Muffy" the current record holder.

(It's also possible that Heihei is actually older than Moana. In which case he would be more than 20 years old in Moana 2)

I.e. 100k embezzlement gets you 2.5 years

Edit.

I meant this to be the national average income (40k if I round up for cleaner math), not based on the individuals income, it's a static formula.

Crime$$$/nat. Avg. Income = years in jail

100k/40k = 2.5 years

1mill /40k=25 years

My thoughts were, if they want to commit more crime but lessen the risk, they just need to increase the average national income. Hell, I'd throw them a bone adjust their sentences for income inflation.

Ie

Homie gets two years (80k/40k=2), but the next year average national income jumps to 80k (because it turns out actually properly threatening these fuckers actually works, who'd've figured?), that homies sentence gets cut to a year he gets out on time served. Call it an incentive.

Anyways, more than anything, I'm sorry my high in the shower thought got as much attention as it did.

Good night

Give them places to live and teach them to grow food which will help pay for the whole thing. It may not work for all of them but maybe it would help 35% or so of them? That's a shitload more than we seem able to help now.

It appears that in every thread about this event there is someone calling everyone else in the thread sick and twisted for not proclaiming that all lives are sacred and being for the death of one individual.

It really is a real life trolley problem because those individuals are not seeing the deaths caused by the insurance industry and not realizing that sitting back and doing nothing (i.e. not pulling the lever on the train track switch) doesn't save lives...people are going to continue to die if nothing is done.

Taking a moral high ground and stating that all lives matter is still going to costs lives and instead of it being a few CEOs it will be thousands.

In the next 7 days do something positive.

  • Chat with your neighbour about something.
  • Chat with a coworker not about work.
  • Chat with your spouse.
  • Chat with your kids.

We got this.

Edit - Tierra Whack. Google that shit. Listen to it. Embrace it.
