!fediverse@lemmy.world is not a place to file your grievances with "free speech", disrupting users, moderation, etc.

If you have problems with users: File complaints to the mods or just block them.

If you have problems with mods: File complaints with admins of the instance or just migrate to an alternative community.

If you have problems with an entire instance: Just leave it.

This community was essentially unmoderated for a while and I've been recently approached to take over moderation duties here. What I don't intend to do is to change any existing rules here but to enforce what has piled up in the moderation queue.

The discussion under the recent post about spam accounts turned into a flamewar regarding US domestic politics which has literally nothing to do with the Fediverse.

With dozens of comments, I don't have the bandwidth to sift through them individually and I've locked the thread. The PSA about spam accounts still stands which is why I didn't remove the post. The accounts involved with that flamewar get a pass for this time. Consider this a warning. Further trolling about US political parties will result in bans.

Howdy folks!

Looking for a bit of help here. Im fairly new to Lemmy but have been enjoying it quite a bit! Something has happened today where on my desktop I can no longer reach lemmy.ca I can access lemmy.ca/u/punchshark no problems. I checked my outbound rules in my firewall and cannot find anything that it is blocked. Anyone ever experience this at all?

I just had my first experience blocking an instance, and it made my realize now nice the lemmy content curation experience is vs the centralized model.

Recently I started noticing a lot of posts from that I just found annoying. There was nothing inherently wrong with them, they just came from a culture I don't understand and so I found them cringey. Since they all came from one community, realized most of them come from the same instance. I just added that instance to my blocklist and the problem is solved!

Now think about in the centralized model. I would be forced to either just accept that these posts are in my timeline, or block each community and user individually. The instance gave me an easy way to manage my content.

I also appreciate that instances can manage the blocking for their users. So the most horrible stuff I don't even see. But it also preserves free speech, as those users who want to say horrible things can do so in their own instance, and most people will just block it.

Anyway, just impressed again by the fediverse!

I'm starting to get in to self hosting and am looking at self-hosted blog solutions. It looks like WriteFreely is the main fediverse blog platform, with Plume as second though I don't see it used much.

But that got me thinking that it'd be good to follow federated blogs and have some long form reading that I follow, like we did back when RSS was the main way of doing things.

But how do I actually find bloggers? It looks like WriteFreely can federate with Mastodon, but it doesn't look like there's a federated blogging platform like lemmy or mastodon. Is this correct? Where I can I go (other than Medium) to find blogs and bloggers in the fediverse?

On another post, an user had asked for the filters I use, so pasting them below to make usability in Mbin better.

Some notes:

  • From what I checked from page sources of a few instances using Mbin, and considering a few of those filters were for kbin.social (RIP) and then repurposed without major adaptations, those filters shouldn't break on most Mbin instances, at least as the engine and its implementations are now.
  • Using thebrainbin.org as the site for the filters to check, but that can be replaced with the site you may be using, like fedia.io, kbin.earth, etc.
  • For disabling a given filter, or to add comments on Ublock Origin's filters page, add a ! to the beginning of the line.
  • Worth noting those filters also make the title and body of posts disappear in the posts' respective pages when active.

The filters:

Hiding specific poststhebrainbin.org##a[href="href_here"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"])

Explanation:
href_here is what appears after the domain name, so for example:
https://thebrainbin.org/m/fediverse@lemmy.world/t/545669/This-is-not-a-complaints-forum
What you want is /m/fediverse@lemmy.world/t/545669/This-is-not-a-complaints-forum, which turns the filter into this:
thebrainbin.org##a[href="/m/fediverse@lemmy.world/t/545669/This-is-not-a-complaints-forum"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"])

This filter needs to be repeated for each post you want to hide.

Probably could replace href= for href^= (matches anything that starts with what comes after it) or href*= (matches anything that includes what comes after it), if this is faster for anyone, so for example:
thebrainbin.org##a[href^="/m/fediverse@lemmy.world/t/545669/"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"])
thebrainbin.org##a[href="/545669/"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"])

Hiding communities already subscribed to or that you blocked on the Magazines pagesthebrainbin.org##span:has-text(Unblock):upward(tr) thebrainbin.org##span:has-text(Unsubscribe):upward(tr)

Hiding posts upvoted and downvotedthebrainbin.org##form[class="vote__up active"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"]) thebrainbin.org##form[class="vote__up active"]:upward(blockquote[id^="post-"]) thebrainbin.org##form[class="vote__down active"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"]) thebrainbin.org##form[class="vote__down active"]:upward(blockquote[id^="post-"])

Some filters for the defunct instances kbin.social & kbin.cafe I forgot to delete in case they're useful! Kbin Cafe - hiding liked posts: kbin.cafe##form[class="vote__up active"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"]) kbin.cafe##form[class="vote__up active"]:upward(blockquote[id^="post-"])

! Kbin Social - hiding specific posts: kbin.social##a[href="/m/memes@lemmy.world/t/951126/Totaled-Eclipse"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"]) kbin.social##a[href="/m/kbinMeta/p/6372596/at-ernest-I-m-up-to-cut-down-the-spam-from-all"]:upward(blockquote[id^="post-"])

! Kbin Cafe - hiding specific posts: !kbin.cafe##a[href="href_aqui"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"]) kbin.cafe##a[href="/m/linux@lemmy.ml/t/216192/What-is-wayland"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"])

! Kbin Social - hiding my own posts: kbin.social##a[href="/u/Auster"]:upward(article[id^="entry-"])

Looks like Pixelfed's growth spurt is slowing down. Absent any new external stimuli I'm guessing it'll stabilize around 200K to 300K monthly active users -- over a hundredfold order of magnitude from what it was just a month ago.

Basically, It would be nice to point out what those platforms are & what are their "Killer Features"

For anyone who wants a quick glance at which platform might be suitable

Interacting on instances which are not yet discoverd and connected to instance where we are registered is pain in the ass. Copying URL into search bar? That is really repelling. I'm sure it was discussed before but I can't find this discussion. How to make it easier? Do devs need to make changes to protocol or it's enough and it can be done within the apps themselves? How close are we to the solution?

Due to how silent the mod of !growthefediverse@slrpnk.net usually is, blaze, earthman and I created a new community: !fedibridge@lemmy.dbzer0.com!

@spaduf@slrpnk.net if you'd like, we'll add you as a mod if you want. See you all there! 👋

I just watched a video from Extractions&Ire about Yttrium, and since I live close to where it was discovered I asked in the comments if I should go there and take a photo, which was heavily upvoted, so I go there and took some photos, upload them to my pixelfed and post the link in the original comment.

And YT immediately removes the entire thread including other comments.

Any one know if Google/YT has a particular beef with pxlmo.com?

It makes it easier to understand what this is and that they are interconnected, but I think I enjoy unique branding/themes more in practice now that I am actually using the fediverse.

I saw a few videos shared on PeerTube recently, and created an account on an instance. However, unlike Mastodon and Lemmy I'm struggling to discover channels to subscribe to. When I use the search functions on my instance, most results are either interesting channels which haven't been updated in years, or random foreign language TV shows and episodes.

Just for example, if I'm trying to find videos on "Gaming" on one of the largest instances, the most recent video is over 1 year ago: https://tilvids.com/search?categoryOneOf=7

Is discoverability on PeerTube bad, or are there barely any active channels?

Edit: BTW one very active creator on PeerTube is https://tilvids.com/c/thelinuxexperiment_channel/videos and his videos are excellent. But can there really only be a handful of active creators to follow on the whole platform?

As a result, our instance https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/ got 625 new user registrations (of which 536 where accepted) in the past 24 hours! And the registrations are not abating even now. We still get like 10 new ones per hour!

I suspect this is probably the largest advertisement, for lemmy specifically, since the main reddit blackouts 1.5 years ago.

Have your own instances also seen an influx of new users?

The first social app that lets you scroll through messages with sideways scrolling! Raccon for Friendica (and Mastodon) does this too

This is a feature already implemented by apps for Lemmy (and for Reddit) or email clients, but for Social apps it represents a unique and innovative feature.

If you want to try the new feature, you can download the apk file directly from github

Noticed this drop and would love to know the reason behind it.
