Should have made a detour to Pratt's Bottom.

[–] joel_feila@lemmy.world 3 points 1 hour ago

So the uk has a 1000 km taint πŸ€”

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 4 points 2 hours ago

They weren't exactly shy about what places were for in the middle ages. This is where the brothels used to be.

Also, Shitterton is literally called that because it was downstream from where all the sewage was flowing.

[–] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 hours ago

Hahaha, such silly names!

Who would even want to live in a town called Glasgow?

[–] 4oreman@lemy.lol 10 points 10 hours ago

Isle of man ; lol

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 23 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

The best part about Shitterton is that the name comes from "sewer town." Not another language, no alternate meaning, it is just as it sounds in modern English.

[–] DJDarren@thelemmy.club 5 points 7 hours ago

The sign for Shitterton had to be carved out of a big chunk of local stone, because the normal metal ones kept getting nicked. Obviously.

[–] francisfordpoopola@lemmy.world 5 points 12 hours ago (3 children)

Texas checking in... We don't have as good of names like that but we have cities like Paris, Athens, and Odessa, TX. I think there are maybe 20 to 25 international city names that would make a fascinating road trip and probably be over 1K miles/1600 Km.

[–] RunawayFixer@lemmy.world 1 points 10 seconds ago

The colonists really missed an opportunity imo, the USA could have had such great place names as New Fingringhoe, but instead it seems like only the boring names got copied :(

[–] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

So not only do you guys not have a sense of humor, you also aren't even creative enough to come up with your own names?

Pathetic

I didn't realize the shitpost community also comes with its own Reddit bots. Nice! The assholery is appreciated. Thank you for throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

you can claim you traveled to all those cities and hope people don't have a follow-up question

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 4 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

You can go see the Parthenon (full scale) and a Pyramid (not accurate) in Tennessee

There are some random things around the U.S. that often get overlooked.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 2 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (1 children)

How are you not mentioning that you can buy guns at the pyramid?

That's a very important detail.

[–] LifeInMultipleChoice@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Are there any respectable places in Tennessee that you can't buy both beer and guns? I mean hell, Walmart is supposed to be the low bar. If you can get a 12 pack, a shot gun and a few hundred shells and walk out without needing anything but an ID showing your 18, well this ain't America

[–] Manalith@midwest.social 2 points 2 hours ago* (last edited 2 hours ago) (2 children)

Whoa whoa whoa, there's beer involved, your ID better say you're 21.

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 1 points 13 minutes ago* (last edited 13 minutes ago)

To be fair, the same is true for handguns and firearm receivers.

Shit I forgot. Cigarettes are 21 now as well I believe.

[–] Blackmist 13 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

You missed out Minge Lane.

[–] roscoe@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I've always liked that one. On a scale of fanny to gash, how impolite is it considered over there?

[–] FozzyOsbourne@lemm.ee 1 points 7 hours ago

It was very popular in the mid-2000s but I don't think I've heard anyone use it since then. I'd say somewhere in the middle.

[–] bruhduh@lemmy.world 5 points 13 hours ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

Since I've seen this route i constantly came

"I tried out that shit barber shop, not bad!"

[–] ChaoticNeutralCzech@feddit.org 37 points 21 hours ago (2 children)

Still avoids Scunthorpe. There is no good reason to visit Scunthorpe.

[–] pyre@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I think that's the Tom Scott video where I learned about Penistone

[–] QuantumSparkles@sh.itjust.works 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

I’ve only learned the name β€œScunthorpe” recently because I was reading up on a band I really like from there. I remember noting that it was about the ugliest name for a town I could think of that doesn’t actually contain any recognizable words… but I would assume it’s a perfectly lovely place regardless of that

[–] Infernal_pizza@lemmy.world 5 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

Doesn’t actually contain any recognizable words

I take it you’ve not heard of the Scunthorpe problem?

[–] QuantumSparkles@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Actually I haven’t, fascinating! Somehow I didn’t even notice that word in there, I was just thinking about how it sounded like β€˜scum’ lol

[–] gofsckyourself@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)
[–] FozzyOsbourne@lemm.ee 7 points 7 hours ago

Quick, someone print out and photocopy this photo

[–] FelixCress@lemmy.world 26 points 21 hours ago (3 children)

Nothing beats, Fucking, Austria:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fugging,_Upper_Austria

"Fugging (German: [ˈfʊkΙͺΕ‹] β“˜), spelled Fucking until 2021, is an Austrian village (...)

Augustina Lindlbauer, the manager of an area guesthouse, said that the area had lakes, forests, and vistas worth visiting, but there was an "obsession with Fucking", and she had to explain to a British tourist "that there were no Fucking postcards".

[–] samus12345@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago

I refuse to spell it any other way than Fucking.

I always thought Twatt and Shitterton were so close to each other... Shows what I know

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 14 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

I am equally impressed that the journey is over 1k miles, considering the entire island is about 600 miles top to bottom. An extra 400 miles of no straight roads.

[–] 200ok@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

I heard the phrase, "as the bird flies" recently in reference to the 600 miles type of measurement and thought that was neat

[–] FozzyOsbourne@lemm.ee 2 points 7 hours ago

"As the crow flies" is a pretty common expression on this very isle

[–] Diddlydee 16 points 22 hours ago

No Bell End or Wetwang?

[–] dditty@lemm.ee 4 points 17 hours ago

I just confirmed that all of those places are real as depicted

[–] UncleArthur@lemmy.world 15 points 22 hours ago

Lots of side trips available to places such as Upper and Lower Dicker (East Sussex), Scratchy Bottom (Dorset) and Minge Lane (Worcestershire).

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 14 points 22 hours ago

If you want a shorter trip you can go from Blue Ball to Paradise. The road goes through Intercourse.

[–] sit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 20 hours ago

Lmaoo Glasgow

[–] Assman@sh.itjust.works 5 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Ass Hill, you say πŸ‘€

[–] Hikermick@lemmy.world 6 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Here in Ohio you can go from Dayton to Marion in four hours but it's a commitment

[–] BakerBagel@midwest.social 4 points 20 hours ago

I'm from Engagement Ohio. It's right between Dayton and Marion
