Not all races have been reported yet but Republicans have won the senate and it really looks like they're going to get a majority in the house as well.

I don't recall this being about sexual abuse, but you can google "On Alienation" which was written by a former member in my city.

I do think it's true that all American orgs of a certain size have SA problems. However, that is a terrible indictment of the current state of the American left and not a statement that it's OK. These problems are more than just bad apples. I suspect there's something about cadre orgs that enables abuse of members. A substantial reason I left Socialist Alternative was their unserious response to multiple sexual assault scandals (one of which was highly publicized and resulted in an international split), which was hampered by their highly centralized leadership. I hope this criticism shows that I'm not a PSL specific wrecker.

looks like the Twitter advertisers have found a new home lol

well sometimes you can't tell from the ingredients e.g. bone char sugar, cysteine from feathers instead of bacteria or synthetic. But those are edge cases

What do you mean soy sauce isn't vegan? Ingredients water, soybeans, wheat, salt.

The Fee Foam cocktail foam is legitimately much less hassle than egg whites. I'm vegan so I don't know if it tastes better (both are bad in large amounts) but I hear that it's caught on at bars.

yeah it sucks. I want to get out of apartments but I'm dreading having to participate in the housing market

Thanks. This is the most thorough treatment I've seen of higher races leading to lower ballot access.

gross. honestly I've had a couple first dates that ended in sex and at least for straight men it's just not good bc of power dynamics. My armchair psychoanalysis is that these men either (a) are just legitimately fucked in the head and could still get their rocks off with a partner who is still background worried for her physical safety (b) don't actually want what they want, and that's why they're half-assing the whole dating app thing. So they can say they put themselves out there but they don't have to be actually vulnerable - self-destructive behavior except they're doing it by being actively shitty to women

Don't ask for a date "sometime", give it a time frame like "this week". Short conversations are perfectly fine and lead to more than 1/3rd of your dates showing up.

an American presidential election? Goku isn't a citizen but because the Dems don't give a shit about DACA recipients Superman probably isn't either. So it's a tossup

They're still in Kurian's office, still streaming, and starting to get major media coverage: WaPo Wired

In my opinion this is one of the most important labor developments in the US in a while. Internationally politicized worker organization in the belly of the beast by traditionally un-unionizable PMCs.

from today's protest against Project Nimbus

I've identified "do X regularly" as a useful behavior. That can get bucketed into two things.

Habits

By "habit" I mean a subconscious or automatic response to stimuli, built by just doing the thing over and over.

Every Sunday evening I take a B12 supplement. It's just something I remember to do; it may be part of my bedtime ritual that's consciously modulated depending on the day. I have the usual strong habits that I don't even think about: brush teeth before bed, look both ways before crossing the street, etc. They don't require any effort to maintain, they get done even when I'm drunk, etc.

Routines

When I used Habitica, one of my weekly and then monthly tasks was to practice the NATO alphabet. Now I have it memorized and occasional real-life use is enough to maintain it. Did the same for my old credit card number. These weren't habits; I needed the app to remind me and didn't do it on my own. But I did actually follow through enough to succeed.

I'm going to use "routine" for a conscious, regular action. My body doesn't know the 29th of the month from any other day, but that's when I'm supposed to pay rent.

Looking back at the regular actions I've tried to take, most of the failures have been routines. The "failed" habits in my list are both things I kept up for a year or so, and then quit doing because I just didn't really want to do them anymore. Furthermore, it seems like the way that habits work is pretty well understood. So to be regularly doing things, I want to turn them into habits.

I would like to follow a better schedule: eat meals at a certain time, do certain things before and after work, etc. If I can express these as stimulus-response habits I think they're doable. But some of them are abstract. There's two groups of these in my list:

  • the "memorization task" type. These don't have any obvious stimulus, and they have expected end dates before habit formation will set in. I've used Mnemosyne and a reminder but kept adding too much shit to it and making practice sessions unpleasantly hard. Ex:
    • Practice the Major System weekly/monthly until memorized
    • Practice street names/address numbers weekly/monthly until memorized
    • Practice interval ear training until I get good
  • the "abstract task" type. I have a biweekly to-do list (pulling from about a hundred to-dos in the backlog) and I'd like to tackle one every day. The actual tasks vary from sitting at my computer to running errands. They also don't have any obvious stimulus. In general they're more important than the memorization tasks.

I think the way to routine formation could be making them into habits by

  • coming up with cues for the abstract triggers, like an alarm or smart light
  • coming up with shared actions to begin the abstract tasks, like getting up to start a timer or something

I still have some learning to do, like whether positive reinforcement helps speed habit formation (can I psych myself into not hitting snooze via ice cream treat?), and then to apply this framework to a specific desired routine. I think tomorrow I'll come up with a trial candidate.

I'm interested to hear what you folks use for habit and routine formation, and any suggested readings you might have.

Posting here instead of /c/chicago since it's pretty dead. They've introduced an ordinance that would ban sales of new fur (not leather, not thrifting, but still):

https://chicago.councilmatic.org/legislation/o2023-0002983/

Apparently Gardiner said today he's going to co-sponsor this, along with some others not yet listed. Why the FUCK are Raylo and Gardiner suddenly champions of animal rights? It seems like it should be easier to get the succdems and progressives on board; I'm gonna ask mine tomorrow.

we're gonna be cooked😭😭

Bought a tent that fits in my kayak. I want to do a one-way camping trip where I go down a river. To get there I will almost certainly have to drive. So I need either

  • A way to move my car down the river so that I can meet it via kayak
  • A way to return myself and kayak to the car
  • A huge 2+day oxbow where the end of the river is only a short hike from the start

How do I find a portage company? Anyone else who has done this? Rental companies often handle this for day trips but I don't know what Google keywords to use for a portage company for your own boat.

I'm in Chicago. I've brought the kayak on the CTA for a day trip down the Chicago river. Inflatable kayak is very bulky and must be carried with one hand, it was kind of a struggle after a quarter mile and it can't fit in a backpack. It would be cool to take one Metra spoke out to a river where I could paddle to a different Metra line to return, but with tent/food/camping supplies it's probably going to be too much to hike with or comfortably carry on the train.
