Two years ago, we received information about the planned federation by Hexbear. The announcement thread can be found here: https://www.Chapo.Chat/PPB. After reviewing the thread and the comments, it became evident that allowing Hexbear to federate would violate our rules.

Our code of conduct and server rules can be found here.

The announcement included several revisionist statements, as highlighted below:

“pee pee poo poo"

The rhetoric and goal of Hexbar are clear based on their announcement: to “piss” and "shidd” shows that Hexbar has no intention of "farding.” It’s mainly to push their pigs with clean balls.

In addition, several comments from a Hexbear admin, demonstrate that Chapo.chat rules will not be respected.

Here are some examples:

“I can assure you there will be no pissing and shidding.”

“All loyal, honest, active and upright Liberals must collect all 11 liberal tendencies shown by certain people among us, and summon the forbidden 12th form of liberalism.”

To clarify, for those who have inquired about why Hexbear versus Reddit, it should be noted that we are currently exploring the possibility of defederating from Reddit as well based on similar comments Hexbear has made.

Defederation should only be considered as a last resort. However, based on their comments and behavior, only liberalism can be expected.

I made the decision to preemptively defederate from Hexbear for these reasons. While I understand that not everyone may agree with my decision, as site admin of Chapo.Chat I believe it is important to unilaterally make decisions for everyone.--

The alternate YT frontends on my PC stopped working for a while and I couldn't get my adblocker to work on YT so I just endured the ads for a while, and while really all the ads are profoundly annoying, this one annoyed me especially.

Transcript in NorwegianKvinne: Hanen eller egget?

Own translationWoman: The rooster or the egg? We can actually choose now.

Narrator: Every year, millions of cockerels have been euthanized in Norway because they cannot lay eggs. Now, cockerel eggs can be plucked out long before they hatch, using a new technology that makes it possible to see the sex after the egg is fertilized.

Woman: Because it should always be good to choose [brand].

Small text at the bottom of the screen: Applies to all [brand] eggs starting 2025.

The fucking audacity of making an ad where you just straight-up say your business savagely murders millions of baby animals a year and is still murdering baby animals at an industrial scale literally at the present moment, only to then act like this is the brand you should choose if you care about animal welfare — because "hey, at least they're gonna stop savagely murdering millions of baby animals In A Few Months."

Sexing unhatched eggs improves their profit margins. This brand was perfectly fine with mass murder for years, there's absolutely nothing to indicate that anything has fundamentally changed about them. There is no good egg brand to choose if you care about animal welfare because the industry is fundamentally exploitative of animals. Why the fuck would an egg brand even attempt to pull an animal welfare angle in its advertising‽ Why the fuck would the actress and the narrator and the scriptwriter and the cinematographer and the sound designer and the 3D animator and the VFX guy and the director and whoever else, think that this ad would do anything other than make people question whether they should eat eggs at all‽

Holy Hell I need to become a vegan like yesterday, this shit is fuuuucked.

I remember stowaway/stolway was another one of those words that I said and heard wrong for a very long time. If I'm being honest, really, if it weren't for the squiggly red line as I'm writing this, "stolway" would still today feel vaguely more correct than "stowaway", like I would just gloss over it if I saw it in a text.

So my child logic was, by my memory, that I related this imagined word "stolway" to something like a reduced form of "stole a way". Which is to say, one could "steal" a way — as in the means to enter or leave somewhere — in the same way as one could "steal" a movie according to that omnipresent anti-piracy PSA, where the "stealing" was not necessarily literal and physical theft of an object, but rather implied doing something one was legally supposed to pay for the privilege of.

The peculiar thing is that my dialect does not have L-vocalization, and I don't think I would've commonly heard "stowaway" in a dialect with that feature. What I am pretty certain of is that any time I heard "stowaway", the schwa in the middle was so reduced that it was either completely deleted or made its presence only felt as an elongation of the preceding /w/. I also very clearly pronounced the "stol" in "stolway" with a shorter vowel than in "stole".

So, I guess "stolway" could've just been an eggcorn with nothing else to it, but I also have to wonder if maybe I had a bias against the /w(ː).w/ sequence I heard, and given a little background noise figured I'd probably just misheard a much less problematically unusual sequence of /ɫ.w/ — and then I just didn't notice upon subsequent hearings that nobody else pronounced "stowaway" with an L. And since nobody corrected me whenever I pronounced "stolway" with an L, that form persisted for years until I finally saw the word "stowaway" written down.

Below these three icons you see some braille.

⠗⠑⠌⠗⠕⠕⠍⠎

...It says "restrooms" in English. In fact it even uses ⠌ as an abbreviation of "st", something only done in English and Irish braille.

You then place your fingertip on the braille. It isn't actually raised.

You then realize that it isn't even plural restrooms in the first place, it's single-user.

There are public resources being mobilized in the Tampa Bay area to help people evacuate. I want this thread to be a place to collect information to help people weathering the storm. Further down in the body of this post I will link some of the resources I have already found.

There was another thread, which I won't be linking here, in which a lot of users were saying that no resources are available to help the poor, disabled, etc. evacuate as Hurricane Milton approaches Florida's Tampa Bay area.

Short rant regarding the doomposting I saw:

spoiler"No investigation, no right to speak."

I don't want to downplay the many failures of the people have to live in, but doomposting about there being no help available at all when that is not the case risks getting people killed.

When these systems fail, criticism is fully warranted. But no one was posting about how they or someone they know had tried to use these resources unsuccessfully. Instead, it seems like there was a collective assumption made about no services being available at all, and without investigation! This is incredibly irresponsible. Double-check yourself before making claims, especially about important matters.

General information on the storm for some of the counties near where the storm will likely have the greatest storm surge

The current estimate (as of 5PM EDT from the National Hurricane Center) is 10-15 feet of storm surge in these counties

Information for those in the above counties in need of transportation assistance to get to shelters

The Klossekode Libre Operating System (KLOS) would be an operating system for touch screen mobile devices probably based on the Linux kernel and Gecko browser engine, with a robust privilege model, installable either by flashing devices, or as an APK running over top of Android. Though this is similar to Firefox OS, what sets KLOS apart from Firefox OS is that all the apps would specifically be made using a block-based visual programming language known as Klossekode (lit. "block-code"). Every app would then have a "see inside" button on the navigation bar that one could tap on, launching the Klossekode mobile IDE to see and edit the code in any way one pleases; and the IDE would of course also have a button on the navigation bar that would take one back to the app in question.

Presumably the code would be run through a compiler à la Turbowarp rather than an interpreter à la Scratch, because the compiler would be faster and more efficient. Turbowarp does not currently support live script editing, because the compilation process makes this very difficult to do, however the Turbowarp documentation says that they believe this is possible and that they want to implement live script editing "eventually".

KLOS would come pre-installed with basically nothing except whatever one needs for the device not to crash, and whatever one needs to allow users to either create Klossekode apps themselves, or transfer the Klossekode files to the phone using the USB or SD card. It should also be possible to develop the apps on a PC and test them live on a USB-connected phone.

So, what's the point of this?

The first point of appeal is that VPLs are generally more accessible to laypeople than the more traditional text-based programming languages. This means that a VPL would make it easier for laypeople to personally check the code running on their phones, and to try changing it for themselves if they're dissatisfied with it. Having the Klossekode IDE would incentivize people to be more creative and try making apps for themselves: it is of course possible for anyone to make an APK using a mobile device, but a drag-and-drop based visual programming language with distinctive colors and shapes and perhaps some haptic feedback, is quite simply better suited for programming on a mobile device than a normal textual programming language.

The other point of appeal is that KLOS would incentivize one to cut down on distractions. Like nothing's stopping you from having a clock and a web browser and an app store on your phone, but if these things don't come pre-installed on your phone, and you reflect on all the times you decided to check the time and ended up doomscrolling... Are you really going to go through the effort? And when you're now used to being able to check and modify code really easily whenever you want, are you really going to be so keen on visiting websites with proprietary software? And when app development has the barrier of entry of learning a new language, for such a niche market as "people who really want to see the code on their apps, but don't know how to read a textual programming language"... How many companies (hell, people) are going to go through the trouble of writing and maintaining apps? The apps themselves would also be incentivized to be small due to the constraints of the VPL.

So yeah, that's the idea, basically.
