Rosa Parks, born on the 4th of February in 1913, was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. U.S. Congress has called her "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement".

Parks was not the first person to resist bus segregation in Montgomery, but the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) believed that she was the best candidate for seeing through a court challenge after her 1955 arrest for refusing to give up her bus seat for a white person.

According to historian Dr. Casey Nichols, following this arrest, Parks immediately contacted local NAACP president E.D. Nixon and informed him of her arrest. Within hours, the Women’s Political Council (WPC), formed in 1946 to address the grievances of black bus patrons in Montgomery, sprang into action, printing flyers, phoning potential supporters, and organizing carpools.

The boycott succeeded in 1957 after the Supreme Court declared bus segregation unconstitutional. Parks' act of defiance and the Montgomery bus boycott became important symbols of the movement, and she became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation.

After the boycott's conclusion, Parks moved to Detroit, Michigan and began working as an assistant to Detroit Congressman John Conyers. She has received numerous honors, including over 40 honorary degrees, the Medal of Freedom, the Congressional Gold Medal of Honor, and two NAACP image awards. In 2002, Parks produced a biographical film titled “The Rosa Parks Story.”

"The only tired I was was tired of giving in."

Wait I'm watching It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia S02 Episode 02, "The Gang Goes Jihad" and it starts with an Israeli guy buying the land their bar is on and Charlie just said "You can't just come in here and steal our land"

Is this show actually really cool??

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 16 points 7 months ago

Yeah. Unlike rick and morty the gang are shithead jerks and you're never supposed to agree with their antics. Afaik Danny Devito has really good politics.

trans/queerphobia, threats of violence

Visiting some of my queer friends in South Carolina and we took a walk downtown and there was a homeless guy shouting at people and started following us around, dragging a metal pipe on the ground, saying all this stuff and threatening to kill us for being queer/trans, spat on my friend. We tried our best not to just keep walking and not engage and eventually he left us alone.

I usually carry pepper spray to have some kind of defense/deterrent in case things did get violent but don't you know it's the one time you leave it at home...

I love y'all. Sometimes I've gotten in fights with people over dumb shit and it's stupid. Also, I think maybe I should get back out of the south soon lol.

I love how philosophers of the Islamic golden age will just be like. Yes wizardry is obviously real, the question we have to consider is the ethics of casting spells thonk And then the disagreement is whether wizards are good if the wizard is a Muslim, or if what matters is what spell is cast.

Magic can't exist, but if it exists we should kill the witch

A lot of the anti-witchcraft stuff was stamping out the last remnants of native religion. Less about actually believing in magic (ignoring the alchemists and other esoteric societies).

I had this idea for a political cartoon of people just pointing and laughing at a disabled US veteran and when people get mad at me for it I want to really commit to this bit where I claim I actually love America and our troops and the freedom we have so I'm just making the most heinous stuff that I don't agree with just to prove that in America you have the freedom to say those things and if you get mad at me about it then you're the American values hating communist.

JFC the NFL is so incredibly jingoistic. I'm watching the Pro Bowl (I know, I know) and they just did a moment of silence for the troops killed in ~~Jordan~~ Syria. Then a troop sang the national anthem standing in the middle of a gigantic American flag. And for the finally a Chinook and two Blackhawks did a fly by. I was really hoping the Chinook would do a nose dive directly into the logo at midfield.

Bakunin set foot in America just as the Civil War was breaking out. Speaking with supporters of both sides, Bakunin stated that his sympathies were with the North, although he claimed hypocrisy in their stated goal of slave liberation while also forcing the South to remain in the Union.

I was watching a Twitch VOD of people eating and one of the streamers said she liked eating fast food because it made her feel like a poor person. They shortly clarified that it made them nostalgic for living off ramen noodles while in college.

It was one of those moments where I paused the video and stared at the screen for a couple seconds. It's one of those stereotypically bougie things that people would make fun of a Hollywood film for having.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudette_Colvin

Claudette Colvin (born Claudette Austin; September 5, 1939) is an American pioneer of the 1950s civil rights movement and retired nurse aide. On March 2, 1955, she was arrested at the age of 15 in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a crowded, segregated bus. This occurred nine months before the more widely known incident in which Rosa Parks, secretary of the local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), helped spark the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott.

Colvin was one of four plaintiffs in the first federal court case filed by civil rights attorney Fred Gray on February 1, 1956, as Browder v. Gayle, to challenge bus segregation in the city. In a United States district court, she testified before the three-judge panel that heard the case. On June 13, 1956, the judges determined that the state and local laws requiring bus segregation in Alabama were unconstitutional. The case went to the United States Supreme Court on appeal by the state, and it upheld the district court's ruling on November 13, 1956. One month later, the Supreme Court affirmed the order to Montgomery and the state of Alabama to end bus segregation. The Montgomery bus boycott was then called off after a few months. Ultimately, the Supreme Court declared segregation on public transportation to be unconstitutional, as a result of Browder v. Gayle.

For many years, Montgomery's black leaders did not publicize Colvin's pioneering effort. Colvin has said, "Young people think Rosa Parks just sat down on a bus and ended segregation, but that wasn't the case at all." Colvin's case was dropped by civil rights campaigners because Colvin was unmarried and pregnant during the proceedings. It is now widely accepted that Colvin was not accredited by civil rights campaigners at the time due to her circumstances. Rosa Parks stated: "If the white press got ahold of that information, they would have [had] a field day. They'd call her a bad girl, and her case wouldn't have a chance."

The record of her arrest and adjudication of delinquency was expunged by the district court in 2021, with the support of the district attorney for the county in which the charges were brought more than 66 years before.
