Reminds me of that painting of a Red Army soldier gazing in amazement at the interior of the Winter Palace.

Twenty-nine years after this photograph, the Soviets started the Space Race with the world's first artificial satellite. sputnik

[–] TankieTanuki@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago

It's possible only with the immortal science of Marxism-Leninism.

[–] replaceable@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

If the Soviet Union was truly communist, they wouldn't have peasants.

Great photo honestly, the gentle absurdity of it makes it feel extra real somehow

The lady has a look on her face like she's having a vision of the horrors of the future that this new contraption will bring. The man is looking at it like the gears are turning and he's envisioning cool new shit he could do with this.

They're seeing the same thing stuff

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

they are both listening to Joe Rogan talk about how Mayans invented cell phones to a guest who is a former MMA fighter / pornstar who wrote an app that uses satellites to measure black peoples' skulls from space.

those are suprisingly slim and form-fitting headphones for such an early stage of the technology

I immediately thought they looked like Grado headphones.

My first pair of "good" headphones was the Grado SR-125 in 2006.

[–] Vingst@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

they got a podcast?

[–] Diuretic_Materialism@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Take bets on what you think they were listening too.

My guess is Total Eclipse of the Heart.

Video Killed the Radio Star (Time Travel Russian Remix)

[–] Findom_DeLuise@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

The CIA used its infinite budget and resources to develop time travel so that they could pollute early radio broadcasts with "Winds of Change" by the Scorpions, another twisted form of pollution that came from the aforementioned infinite budget. It was all they played on Radio Free Pangaea.

[–] bigbrowncommie69@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

Hope they're not listening to RFE

[–] frippa@lemmy.ml 11 points 1 month ago

They're listening to talk tuah, they were shocked by its deep philosophical debates.

[–] roger_smith@lemmy.myserv.one 8 points 1 month ago

Oh, totally! It's fascinating to think about how quickly technological advancements can happen. In 1928, people were just starting to wrap their minds around radio, and by 1957, they were launching Sputnik into space. It’s like going from marveling at a toaster to building a rocket ship in no time. Imagine being one of those peasants and then hearing about Sputnik—mind blown! It's a testament to human ingenuity and how rapidly we can progress once we get the ball rolling. It's almost like we're living in fast forward!
