An asteroid the size of 5000 9mm rounds weighing as much as 4000 kilos of seized cocaine

[–] aksdb@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Finally a measurement I can relate to.

[–] CertifiedBlackGuy@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

I can't. I need it in 7.62 NATO

But metric can still be applied. Hear me out.

So a yard is roughly one meter. It means a kilo-yard is about one kilometer and a centi-yard is one centimeter. How many miles or inches that is, is a conversion problem within the imperial system.

In the same way, a quart is about one liter. Milli-quart is about one milliliters. Easy. How many gills those are is not our problem.

There is no immediate equivalent for weight, although a double-pound would be roughly one kilogram.

It's almost like Imperial system units have all been borrowed from different measurement systems that should have nothing to do with each other. Tho I could get behind 12 inches in a foot, that seems nice to divide

Also reminded me of 'small boulder the size of a large boulder'

Americans formulating newer and more insane measurements because they can't use normal ones

Most of America use metric.

[–] dylanTheDeveloper@lemmy.world 11 points 9 months ago

Lies made up by big measurements

Yeah, but how many washing machines big was the crater?

And he’ll make the Kuiper Belt pay for it!

The size of a corgi? That's nearly an 8th of a bald eagle. If it's really the weight of a baby elephant, then that's at least 200 pistols. That's hella dense, but i wish they'd use standard measures. I hate having to translate that into American like this.

[–] Whirling_Cloudburst@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

They do that to invite curiosity that facilitates learning. But. I get you.

Anyway what kind of pistols are we talking about here? A Desert Eagle .44 weighs in about 72oz while a baby elephant is about 200-300 lbs (lets settle in at about 250). Therefore, that is 1000 lbs. A thousand pounds is 16000 oz and that makes it about 222 Desert Eagles .44.

NASA's just going to get more and more specific to these:

"So there's this asteroid that's about the size of Ted from Accounting. Now I mean Ted Abrams from Accounting, not Ted Hillman. Okay? Big difference. Anyway, so it's roughly the size of Ted, but, like, if Ted tucks himself into a loose cannonball like he's diving into a pool. I mean, he's not tightly compact like a ball, we all know Ted isn't that flexible. I mean, not since he threw out his back a couple.of years ago, poor guy. But get this, y'all: this sucker weighs the same as a 1972 Ford Pinto. Only it's a Ford Pinto that's had the engine block removed, is missing the right-read tire (the wheel is there, just no tire), has a quarter tank of gas, and there.are three.Verne Troyers in the seats. Huh? Yeah, the.guy who played Mini Me. No, no. The guy from Jackass is somebody else entirely.

Okay, but yeah, that asteroid's gonna land smack dab in the middle of Carmel, Indiana's KFC at about 2:43 AM EST on February 11th, 2024. It'll mostly disintegrate by the time it hits that a couple of tiny pebbles might bounce off the roof, but it's important that we let you all know this stuff."

[–] SonnyVabitch@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

See, it worked!

How much is that in washing machines?

[–] tuxrandom@kbin.social 8 points 9 months ago (1 children)

(4*baby elephant weight)/(washing machine weight) = (4 * 110 kg) / (70 kg) ≈ 6 washing machines

[–] ignotum@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

As someone who has had to move washing machines up and down stairs, i have to correct your value there, a washing machine is closer to 43.2 metric tonnes

[–] CazRaX@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

Only when moving on stairs, when on the floor it weighs like 30lbs tricking you into thinking it will be simple to take to the second floor.

[–] jmcs@discuss.tchncs.de 16 points 9 months ago (1 children)

So anywhere between 30 and 60 cubic decimeters and 800kg and who knows what they still consider a baby elephant.

[–] remotelove@lemmy.ca 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

So.. Almost between tierce and a rundlet? Or is it just over a quater?

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 16 points 9 months ago (1 children)

300mm spherical, 480 kilograms.

[–] dylanTheDeveloper@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Why does that sound like something people put on their Tinder profiles

[–] SnokenKeekaGuard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Some Alex Horne metric that is

[–] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

How many Little Alex Hornes per baby elephant?

[–] datelmd5sum@lemmy.world 11 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Hoe many cubic football fields is a corgi?

[–] dankm@lemmy.ca 8 points 9 months ago (1 children)

That's difficult to imagine, a cubic football field would exist in six demensional space.

[–] datelmd5sum@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

How many dimensions does a corgi exist in?

[–] WhiskyTangoFoxtrot@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

All of them.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.mindoki.com 6 points 9 months ago

That looks like the CD Ram it down by Judas Priest.

[–] Annoyed_Crabby@monyet.cc 2 points 9 months ago

How many banana again?

[–] xePBMg9@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 9 months ago (1 children)

What really matters is how many sideways corgi per elephant yawn it was traveling toward Texas. It doesn't say.

[–] IWantToFuckSpez@kbin.social 1 points 9 months ago

What really matters is ~~how many sideways corgi per elephant yawn~~ it was traveling toward Texas.

[–] THEDAEMON@lemmy.ml 1 points 9 months ago

So aprox a quarter of full grown elephant.
