Do you play video games with your spouse? What do you play together? Do you have coop sessions? I want to hear your stories.

My husband (40M) is a PC gamer. I (40F) have recently started playing coop games with him. I've tried playing in the past, but I never get very far due to the intensity in most of them. Recently, we started playing co-op games together so he can help me out while we play, and I can actually enjoy the game. I was just curious what other couples play and if you have any recommendations for us.

PC games we've played in co-op: Splinter Cell, Breakpoint, Green Hell, Astroneer, Grounded, and we just started Icarus. *The only one we truly finished together is SplinterCell and most of Breakpoint.

My wife and I have played through Pokemon sword/shield and scarlet/violet together. Her first completed game and platinum trophy was It Takes Two, and that was a very special game to play through together. Highly recommend. We also played through Diablo 4 together. She loves coop rail shooters in the arcades, Carto, Hogwarts Legacy, Two Point Hospital, and Trine. We've played tons of games, like Mario, Wow, Destiny 2, Borderlands, final fantasy14, and she kicked my ass in Tekken and Dragonball FighterZ(as she gave me an "oh yeah, I used to play Tekken all the time 😂) . But she'll still say games arent her thing 🙃 lol

My suggestions would be: Diablo3(witch doctor) or diablo 4(necromancer), It Takes Two, Overcooked, Borderlands 2(Gaige), Trine series, and if both of you can do it without taking it personally, fighting games like mortal kombat and street fighter is always fun to just button mash and see what happens. Pokemon was priceless watching her reactions to every new pokemon she discovered, and the tactics she came up with to win(if you cant beat'em, use Toxic and spam potions 😂). Its not true coop, though.

Sometimes but i like my single player rpgs very much but we have a fortnite squad with my wife, our son and her sister once in awhile usually when new maps come out we’ll play for a a few weeks

[–] kimi_cakes@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

We both game in the same room but play different games, but he plays Hell Let Loose and GTA and I play Zelda and Animal Crossing.

[–] BitterBory@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I was the bigger gamer when I got together with my husband. We used to just have Nintendo products and played a lot of Mario Party, Kart, etc. Then we got PCs.

We each will play our own games, but then do co-op as well. Some of my favorite co-ops are Stardew Valley, Sun Haven, 7 Days to Die, Minecraft, Force of Nature, Sim City, Civilization (can be competitive too), Bloons 6, and Valheim.

[–] stephier1974@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My husband does not play games at all. Not his thing. He does not care that I play all the time.

[–] NeedsItRough@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Sometimes.

He used to game a lot more but doesn't have much patience for it lately.

We also play very different games (I'm currently playing totk, thinking about stardew valley next while he rotates between fortnight, rocket League, and some arcade-style single player galaga-esque shooter) so it's hard to find one we'll both enjoy.

But we did just 100% super Mario wonder tonight and I think we spent probably 30-50 hours on it together so that was fun.

[–] craven42@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I'd recommend looking at It Takes Two. It's a really cute co-op platformer / puzzle game

[–] tehnoodnub@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

We game together a little but usually we're both playing different games because we like having our own adventures. She's currently playing Breath of the Wild and I'm playing Baten Kaitos. In the past we've played games like Mario Kart and Overcooked 1 + 2 together. Sometimes we will watch what the other person is doing in their game for a while and talk about it. If she's watching me play it usually consists of her asking me (in jest) why I'm so violent and always murdering innocent creatures.

[–] BadLuckCharm1966@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

No. My kids and I play video games, but, my husband prefers DnD and card games like MTG.

[–] individual101@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My wife watches me play games when it's a Nintendo game like Mario or zelda. I play wow and destiny and she doesn't like those.

[–] ts355231@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My wife is terrible at video games, but she enjoys playing games with me. I recently found a game we both like and can have fun with. It's called It Takes Two. Even though she's not the best gamer, I love that she tries and we have fun with it. The Nintendo Switch is not my style of gaming, but it has a great catalog of games that you don't have to be good at but we can have fun with together.

[–] Fabulous_Topic_602@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

We're definitely going to try out It Takes Two. Everyone's been recommending it in the comments.

Your wife sounds a lot like me. I only started playing coop games because my husband loves gaming so much, and I just want more time with him. He thinks it's funny how absolutely terrified I get in games sometimes. 🤣

One time he tried to teach me how to play Modern Warfare (I think that's the game I'm thinking of), anyway there's a scene where I was trying to hide and get off a sniper shot, but I had to wait for the patrol to pass by. The guy was walking his k9, and I was crouched in the bushes. I couldn't figure out how to lay down, so I just stopped moving the mouse and got really quiet (IRL like the game could hear me or something). Apparently, I wasn't really hidden, though, because the next thing I knew, there was a dog in my face and I. LOST. IT! I jumped back, knocking over both the chair and myself. The keyboard went flying in the air, and I was screaming bloody murder! It really startled me! Thankfully, the keyboard landed on the escape key, so it paused the game, but I didn't want to play it again after that, so I play coops and he take care of the bad guys until I get comfortable enough with the game to help him fight. 🤣🤣🤣

Dead by daylight mainly, my wife get severe motion sickness from any 3D games, but weirdly DBD is fine. So that’s what we often play.

[–] ElasmoGNC@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My wife is also a gamer. Path of Exile is our main game, which is a huge time investment so it crowds out a lot of others, but she also plays RPGs, 4X and strategy games, and occasionally dips into other genres. Officially co-op RPGs like D:OS are great for us, but we also commonly play “single-player” games together collaboratively.

[–] Fabulous_Topic_602@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

What I'd D:OS? Sounds like something we'd probably like too.

[–] JoyousRahl@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

We both game. Together and a part. Some games I don’t like to play, but I’ll watch him play and help him with some stuff. Like point stuff out or help with puzzles, depending on the game. Some games are just too creepy or scary for me to play, but I’ll watch him play them 🫣🤣 we’re currently playing Diablo IV together. And I have a character for when he’s at work 😂

[–] joshuacassidygrant@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah! We do a lot of TTRPGs and board games together as a social thing with other groups.

We've also played some co-op games. Stardew Valley, It Takes Two, Overcooked, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime and now on to Baldur's Gate 3.

I think Stardew Valley co-op is a really fun (though slightly chill) mix of planning and action for a couple.

[–] icryalways@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My husband and I play games together! Right now we're playing Diablo 4 and monster hunter world. If there's a cinematic/single player game I'll watch him play. Yakuza, Bethesda games, etc. It's great

[–] DraconicRuler@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Both of us are gamers thankfully. FFXIV is our main game together. But we also play Destiny 2, Genshin among others. She enjoys watching me play Story of Seasons. I enjoy watching her play Tales of games. Or even FFVII remake.

[–] jproche44@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My spouse absolutely hates gaming and will probably end up leading to divorce.

[–] Remarkable_Ice_9260@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My hubby and I have two TVs side by side with PS4s, we game often. Some faves of ours have been Diablo 3, Borderlands 3 and Ark: Survival Evolved. We also recently bought a Nintendo Switch each so we could play games when he’s away for work. We play Farm Together and Conan Chop-Chop on the Switch so far. Been married for three years and he is my Player Two <3

[–] Ambitious_Pay4054@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Sonic Mania, various Dynasty Warriors style games, 2d beatemups (Streets of Rage 4 is really good), Rocket League, PokeMMO, Terraria, and a bit of Minecraft, are all pc games we have enjoyed together.

Sometimes it's also nice to both play a single player game around the same time and discuss, or to take turns playing and watching a more cinematic single player game.

[–] SephithDarknesse@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I intentionally searched for someone that shares hobbies with me. Someone who doesnt game at all would likely just be annoying. Even if its different games.

[–] TomTako@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My wife and I game together almost nightly! We play Chivalry 2 a lot. Her on the PS5 and me on PC. We also play Baldurs Gate 3 together on PS5. It Takes Two was a fave.

I'm just happy I can share what I love doing with her! She's also coming around to gaming by herself. Just started Red Dead Redemption 2 and loves it!

[–] Fabulous_Topic_602@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I've been seeing Baulder's Gate, and It Takes Two on here quite a bit. I like watching my husband play RDR. I like to pet the horsey and play poker on it, though.

[–] tragedyfish@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I've tried for years. She has yet to acquire the least bit of interest. There are numerous games that I consider to be masterpieces of art. She will never understand, and I am forced to accept this.

[–] Fabulous_Topic_602@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It's okay that you two have different interests. I only really game with my husband because he enjoys it so much. Then, after I get a handle on things, I really enjoy it too. The fact that she's supportive of you doing what you love is awesome!

[–] phenolic72@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My wife had not played games when we met. But when we met, I introduced her to WoW. It was just out vanilla back then. She traveled during the week, but we played together every weekend when she came home. We did this for 2 years before we got married. We probably played for another year before we had a kid and that put it on hold for a long time.

Fast forward 16 years (ish) and she doesn't play anymore, but my son does. :)

[–] Boogieman070@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

My wife 37 and I 35 play borderlands together and we enjoy the time we spend together and the funny aspects of the game. She’s not as good as others but seeing her have fun and laugh during game play makes it well worth me carrying her lol.

[–] Fabulous_Topic_602@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

That's really all that matters. It's always nice to share something you love with your SO, even if its not really their thing. Time spent laughing and having fun together is what's important. It's nice you two can spend that time together.

[–] FwompusStompus@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My partner and I both play games. Some we play together, some we play solo and watch each other play. We both have our flavors of games we like, but often coincide. She loves resource management games, and I hate them. I love jrpgs, and she doesn't. But we both love assassins creed, diablo, and played a lot of battlefront 2 when we started dating a few years back. We had a blast with It Takes Two. I'm 30 and she's 25. I honestly couldn't be happier because my ex never played games with me at all. Hence why I'm proposing next month.

[–] brian11e3@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My wife plays a few games with me and our friend circle, but her PC is down right now. Once I get it up and running again, she wants to play Balders Gate 3 with me.

[–] Yabanjin@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My wife hates games, but encourages my hobby. I just play online with friends.

[–] RustletheCrow95@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My girlfriend is a Twitch streaker. We rarely play games together; not only because we're interested in different genres, but because after 6-7h streaming per day, she just doesn't really want to play games anymore.

[–] cidici@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Used to, started with Borderlands, then we separately played Mass Effect and Dragon Age as well. I don’t think she games anymore though ( divorce)…

[–] Cinemaslap1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My wife is a casual gamer. We got a switch and both play it... She plays Animal Crossing almost constantly. She also loves the Sims and Hogwarts Legacy. There's very few games we play together, but we're always on the look out for some fun games to play together.

[–] lovelylotuseater@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Rarely. There are a few games we played together, but we have different styles of gaming. They like to grind and I like to poke around and explore. We will game in the same room (PCs are in the living room in addition to a few consoles as well as a switch) or watch one another play.

[–] Zenguro@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Me and my GF play games like Aliennation (Playstation exclusive) and Streets of Rage (the new remake). But most of the time we stick to watching TV after work X'D

[–] bubblegum_cloud@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Try ARK Survival Evolved. Survival Ascended is the newer version of it, but ASE has more mods, more dinos, more maps. Plus, you need a beasty computer to run ASA. My husband and I play this game so much together. We've got about 6k hours in this game between the two of us.

Tame dinos, built bases, defeat bosses, travel to new maps, breed dinosaurs/mammals/reptiles/etc. Otters, TRex, Raptors, Mosasaurus, Wolves. Color breed them and collect all the colors!

[–] ngriner@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My wife is not a gamer at all…

But she loves Halo, especially Infinite. She loves completing the battle passes and decking out her character. So much so that she doesn’t like it much when I play without her. lol. She’s taken a liking to Halo ever since we met 20 years ago and had to sit through Halo 1 LANs with buddies to hang out with me. lol.

Not many other games interest her at all though.

[–] kiladre@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Depends on our moods. Sometimes we play together, sometimes we’ll be somewhat parallel(fallout them, starfield me), sometimes completely separate. Just depends on

[–] simple_muffin02@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

We play Mario kart and other Mario games on the switch but we also play cod. We both loved the prop hunt in cold war it was a good time. She also enjoys pvp on cod. We have been playing on mw3 together since it came out.

[–] Marma85@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

We play some toghether and some not. Fps games we play toghether, we played stray toghether. But same we have singelplayer games we play alone. Minecraft we have a own server for the family

[–] KingDecidueye@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

She used to be a bigger gamer but recently it’s more that she’ll watch me play something with a decent story and if she wants to play she’ll play Crash Bandicoot remastered on the Switch or some of the classics on the emulator.

I tried to get her into BG3 and we had a 4hr session but haven’t got around to picking it up again. I’ve since made a new char and have almost beat it ahaha

We don't play co-op games togther but we will do playthroughs together, most recent we started a FFV playthrough

[–] BorealusTheBear@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My wife was a big MMO player, now she is into survival and bullet hell type games, I play 4X, RTS, RPG games so usually we don't play together. Gaming is more of an escape to me than just entertainment so I keep to the slower single player things.

During the holidays we tend to stay in and play games together like Astroneer, Green Hell, No Man's Sky, and recently Baldur's Gate 3.
