Hi

I normally take my watch off when going to the hot sauna and steam room, however I noticed some people come in wearing their apple watches, I keep wondering if this is safe especially for the battery to be exposed to such high temperatures and for the watch electronics overall ?

I still think it is unsafe but correct me if I’m wrong

I am unsure but using my Fitbit watch as my scenario I would say no.

Finn here,

It’s not recommended to wear AW in a sauna, due to high temperatures and humidity (steam).

However you typically keep your hands low in a sauna, where the temperatures are not high. I occasionally wear my watch in sauna, for example at a public swimming hall. So far no problems with that.

Swedish sauna or real sauna?

[–] PKMNTrainerEevs@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I’d swim with it but I wouldn’t take in a sauna. Don’t think it’s wise to do so tbh

[–] thebaron_26@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I've been wearing my Series 5 in the steam room, sauna and hot tub 4-5 times per week for the last year. No issues.

[–] eej71@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

On vacation in Mexico, I got to drop from a zipline into a cenote. Great experience for me. However, the Apple Series 6 watch did NOT survive the experience. Perhaps it was the nature of the impact into the water. Or perhaps it was the mineralized water. Who knows. Bottom line. Its water resistant. At best. Not water proof.

[–] westhebes@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I’ve been wearing them in the sauna since series 2 and I’ve never had an issue, honestly I think the sweat cools it off a bit because I’ve never had an overheating issue, the phone will overheat if you don’t splash water on it every now and then

[–] RepresentativeAsk431@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Yes, I have my garmin always so Apple Watch (ultra should so classic too) should too

[–] Officedrone15@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I just wouldn’t. You can leave your electronics outside and wait til later!

[–] danemacmillan@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Apple’s docs state not to wear it in these circumstances. You can find them somewhere.

Anecdotally, I’ve never taken mine off at the spa. I go frequently, and do multiple bouts of 20 minutes in steam, sauna, hours in hot water, etc. I’ve not had an issue. The only place I ever take it off is at the beach, as the sand will destroy it.

[–] DefiantAdvance@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I always use mine in the sauna with no issues.

[–] nothingexceptfor@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

i wear mine without issues

[–] dnam15@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I take my phone and watch in the sauna often. Only issue I've seen was my phone presenting the high temp signage.

[–] jpad1208@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (3 children)

Darn, I bring both my watch and phone in the sauna

[–] Affliction-LV@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Why would you take your phone with you in sauna?

[–] DadBud512@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It sounds like it’s relatively safe to do it but I am not that brave, my OCD kicks in and I start imagining all sort of scenarios from burning to exploding battery lol

Took my Ultra in for my first time... After 9.5 mins, it shut down and displayed a temp logo with red in it.

The third time I used the sauna without the Ultra, I saw someone had an Apple Watch, so asked how his responded in this heat. He said it had never been an issue and had never shut down.

I then pondered aloud whether mine had shut down because it’s titanium rather than aluminium and might have conducted the heat more. He got up and left. I meant it as a genuine science conundrum, but he might have taken it as me being a tosser.

[–] notchandlerbing@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Well I guess it’s not recommended, but I used to wear my S4 in the sauna 4x a week prior to COVID when my gym had one. Never ran into any problems so far, even after I started going back several times per month. No major battery or connection issues yet

[–] pete17100@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I use it all the time in the sauna previously with my series 6 and now ultra 2. Always run the cooldown workout to track my heart rate and usually stay in for 10-15 minutes and have never run into a problem. Sauna temp usually at 200 degrees Fahrenheit

[–] vallary@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

here’s the support documentation for acceptable operating temperatures. Additionally in the handling information it mentions that use in high temperatures can degrade the water resistance.

Personally, I take mine off when I go into the steam room or sauna as it would be uncomfortable to wear when it’s that hot, but I also see people wear theirs in and/or bring in their entire phone. (Typically I leave my phone outside and just wear headphones in if I want to listen to a podcast/music). I think the amount of time you spend in there probably also affects your preference, sometimes people just come in the sauna for 10-15min which is likely less affecting than a 45min session.

[–] HammerToFall50@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Whilst it’s not recommended, I took my Apple Watch Series 4 into the swimming pool (that’s ok) and sauna, steam room and infrared room 3 times a week for years. With zero issues.

I now confidently take my shiny new Apple Watch Ultra 2 in there and had zero issues.

[–] AbeTheBabe21@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

My Apple Watch SE broke after a couple months due to the moisture getting far in it.

[–] KampissaPistaytyja@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Sauna is a place where I go to relex (every day, a Finn...) so I'd never use any electronics in a sauna. It would also feel very stupid to have a watch when you are butt naked.

Anyway, something that is waterproof may not be steam proof, I personally would not take the risk. But obviously you do you.

[–] vividri-volkov@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I’ve never treated my Apple Watch differently than any other watch, worn it all sorts of conditions and it works fine.

I disagree with everyone in this thread so far based on my own experience.

Had every watch from the OG to the latest Ultra 2, upgrading every year. Worn every single one in a hot dry sauna and my own personal home steam room. Not one issue ever. I always have AppleCare+ on them though. I also wear my AirPods in those environments. Never issues either.

I workout 4-6 days a week and use a sauna or steam room every time. Never had a single issue with any watch. YMMV but that’s my experience.

I bought cheap AirPods gen 1 and labeled them sauna pods . I leave my iPhone just outside the glass door. I replace them like once every 8 months or so .

Learned this from Joe Rogan haha

[–] KingBubbaBouy1@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I wore mine every day in the spa on the NCL Encore cruise ship on Alaska. My routine was sauna for 15min 140-150 degrees. Then ice room -20 degrees. Then foggy steam room for 15. Then hot therapy pool for 1/2 hr The watch is built for extremes!!!!

[–] 2687243courage@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I took my AW diving, sauna, shower everyday, no problem but I wouldn't recommend it

[–] Ridolph@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Will AppleCare cover such damage if it happens?

I’ve used Apple Watch in a sauna for a several times. Yes, the watch heated up, and sometimes turned off. But besides that nothing happened.

[–] RickyMEME@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I’ve used my Apple Watch in a sauna and steam room a few times every week for a year. Never had a problem.

[–] FleetEnema2000@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

All these replies and not a single person has referenced Apple's own recommendations:

https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204508

Ambient temperature while you're wearing Apple Watch Ultra: -4° to 130° F (-20° to 55° C)

So it depends on the sauna temperature.

[–] iZian@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

The following can affect the water-resistance of your Apple Watch and should be avoided:

  • Wearing Apple Watch in a steam room
  • Wearing Apple Watch models other than Apple Watch Ultra or later in a sauna
  • Wearing Apple Watch Ultra or later in a sauna above 55°C (130°F)

I have run my SS, AWI and AWII through many sauna's steam rooms hot tubs and cold plunges and never had one issue at all. I use a steam room and sauna 2x per week - hot tub about the same and cold plunge daily always with my watch on. No issues with any watch so far

[–] fuzzy_peach91@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

What about an infra red sauna?

[–] kakeporyou21@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I talked to a guy at the Apple Store about this when I upgraded from my 6 to my current AW2. I used to wear my 6 everyday into the sauna btw. He said it is not meant to be worn in the sauna at all, it’ll kill the battery faster. Along with all the other issues mentioned on this thread.

[–] kingcreamEAT@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Everyone saying no when I’ve been doing it for years with no issue :o

[–] russ8825@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

No but if you have AppleCare it at least covers you. I bring my ultra in the sauna all the time but having the applecare in the back of my mind helps

[–] KhurramJaved@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

My watch died after I took it to a sauna the 3rd time. Definitely not safe to do do

[–] notmyrlacc@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

As others say, it’s not recommended but I’ve worn it plenty of times and never had an issue.

[–] Ok-Confidence-6825@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

You guys are talking out of your asses. I took my aw 7 to the sauna at least 3 times a week for a year. No problem. Now the ultra 2 has no problems. I also take a cold shower in between sauna reps and it's fine. Is it the best thing you can do to the aw? No. But it will work just fine

[–] AnalyticalAlpaca@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I use mine in a dry sauna once a week or so. My previous watch quit working after 2-3 years, and my current watch I've used for maybe 4 months so far.

[–] R808T@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I have had my ultra in a sauna but not long. I have also had it in a hot saltwater soak as with no ill effects.

[–] luigibu@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I use it.. twice a week. So far, no issues. I will keep it using, if a watch can’t survive a sauna I will just quit wearing one.

[–] Dee-punk@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I use my ultra in sauna 3 times a week. No issue so far.

[–] evanbagnell@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

My Apple Watch U1 has probably spent about 120 hours total so far in the sauna. No issues.

[–] evanbagnell@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

My Apple Watch U1 has probably spent about 120 hours total so far in the sauna. No issues.

[–] gettingthere52@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Anecdotal. But I’ve been wearing my Apple Watch in the sauna everyday for almost 3 years now and it’s never been an issue. (I have upgraded to different Apple Watches during that time, but no watch has yet had any issues related to sauna use)

[–] Obi-Lan@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

No watch is.
