Where I live, the driver gets the ticket if the passenger has no seatbelt. The car doesn't move unless everyone is buckled in, because I'm not paying for someone else's laziness.

[–] Selmafudd@lemmy.world 28 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Yeah here I'm pretty sure it's the driver gets a fine and the passenger too if they're over 16yo

[–] systemglitch@lemmy.world 16 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Okay yeah I looked it up its the same here. Both passenger and driver if the passenger is over 16.

[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago (2 children)

I'm surprised they don't enforce it for passengers 16 and under. Seatbelts are important for them too.

[–] Sotuanduso@lemm.ee 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The driver still has to pay for it, which is usually going to be your parents, who would probably be footing the bill anyways if you're that young.

[–] son_named_bort@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I misread it and thought that the driver got a citation for any adult passengers that weren't buckled in but not minor passengers. The adult passengers getting their own citations while the driver getting the citations for unbuckled minors makes a lot more sense.

[–] Sotuanduso@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

Actually it sounds like the driver gets the citation either way. If the passenger is a minor, that's it, but adult passengers get cited in addition to their drivers.

And for good reason. A single unbelted person in the car is a serious threat to everyone else in an accident. You could end up paying for it with your life if you let it slide. I think the statistic is something like a 20% increased risk of death in an accident when a single passenger is unbuckled.

And I hate that "aren't you a good driver" idiocy. Sure, but aren't all those other drivers on the road the worst?

[–] Angry_Maple@sh.itjust.works 4 points 11 months ago

I've read some stories about this happening from people who work in the ER. Having someone else's teeth pulled from your skull doesn't sound like the best way to go.

I kind of wonder if these people understand momentum.

[–] eco_game@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 11 months ago (1 children)

That's interesting, in Germany aslong as the passenger is an adult it's no longer the drivers responsibility whether that passenger cares about their own safety. The fines go up fast for children though.

[–] systemglitch@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

It used to be similiar here, but they changed things around a decade ago

This is the way.

[–] echodot 137 points 11 months ago (3 children)

You're going to drive to buy illegal drugs, and you don't put your seat belt on, so now some cop has cause to pull you over, what if he's doing it on the way back? Fucking idiot.

[–] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 54 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Only break one law at a time.

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 17 points 11 months ago

Always be breaking exactly one law. Never more, never less.

This is difficult, but not impossible, while sleeping.

[–] Zoomboingding@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Or: Don't break the law while you're breaking the law

[–] Donkter@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Alternatively: only break one law at a time.

[–] doingthestuff@lemmy.world 34 points 11 months ago

Never commit a misdemeanor while you're committing a felony.

When I was a teen driver in the 90s, my rule was seatbelts or get the fuck out. If they fought me on it, I described to them in excruciating detail what my aunt looked like after a semi hit her car and she wasn't wearing a seatbelt. She was unrecognizable as a human being.. and she lived. Imagine looking like that while still alive. Put on your fucking seatbelt.

Fake

anon has friends

Gay

anon slams his bro

[–] Rentlar@lemmy.ca 39 points 11 months ago

I have done that except at like from <5km/h with a friend who didn't feel like putting it on. Just enough so they are jolted a little forward. That got them to put it on really quickly.

[–] SeabassDan@lemmy.world 31 points 11 months ago

We can obviously assume that OP was a coward and just drove quietly to the dealer and back and upon returning home sat at his computer and told his online buddies what he would've said if he wasn't such a wimp.

[–] Shikadi@lemmy.world 29 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Damn the guy doesn't even get his weed

[–] julianschmulian@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 11 months ago (1 children)

[–] alignedchaos@sh.itjust.works 10 points 11 months ago

True anon shit to have their friend start a sentence with “lol” and for their head to hit the windshield instead of the dash too

[–] Lev_Astov@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Turned out he was going to his auto dealership to get his own car back from the shop.

Chaotic good characters are wild.

[–] 1847953620@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

Fake, 40mph head slam is a trip to the hospital minimum; you can slam someone into the dash just by letting the car roll from idle and then hitting the brakes (if it's a v6 or thereabouts in typical displacement). I know 'cause I tried it once not realizing how badly I would make them hit the dash. I just thought I would make them jerk forward a little and scare them. Seat material matters, of course, in my case it was fake leather/vinyl.
