lmao Biden made sure one of the last events of his presidency was banning the most popular social media site in the country, leaving it to be unbanned by Trump days later.

Democrats really don't want to win.

John Oliver: This is why we have to ban TrumpTok, I mean DrumpfDrok

[–] Wheaties@hexbear.net 60 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Apparently in one of his recent videos, he argued we need to rethink the whole "anyone from anywhere being able to talk to anyone else" aspect of technology, on accounta scary-wary foreign disinformation

[–] MouthyHooker@hexbear.net 49 points 1 week ago

In his defense, many US normies have been very easily China-pilled in a matter of days. (And we love to see it!!!)

[–] SevenSkalls@hexbear.net 46 points 1 week ago (1 children)

On the one hand, I agree with him, but only in the sense that I think AES countries need to shut down disinformation from the US and the West. Their whole argument about why they should be able to output propaganda to these countries has always been the right to freedom of speech, so it is hilarious watching one of their most sacred pillars of liberalism crumble before our very eyes.

[–] Kieselguhr@hexbear.net 15 points 1 week ago

freeze-peach was always about propagating the cultural hegemony

Libs sacrificing one more of their so-called liberal values one by one when they can't control every aspect of how people exercise those values

[–] Cimbazarov@hexbear.net 31 points 1 week ago

Oh god, I'm embarrassed for him

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 49 points 1 week ago

trump should keep tiktok banned for a week to really set in the anti-democrat feeling in the zoomers/gen alpha and them unbanning it

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago

Listen, Jack

[–] pemptago@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (2 children)

Funny because Trump brought it up before Biden was in office. "Man praised for putting out fire after starting said fire." Lucky for him it seems TikTok users have memories as short as their media.

Edit: wording

Absolutely hilarious play by TikTok and probably the most easily avoidable PR disaster for the Democrats in decades. I laughed so fucking hard when I saw this, I can only imagine the panicked phone calls that are happening right now.

[–] radio_free_asgarthr@hexbear.net 69 points 1 week ago (1 children)

God, I really have a hard time believing that the Democrats actually want to win elections.

[–] OprahsedCreature@lemmy.ml 55 points 1 week ago

CTH described them best when they called them "pratfall artists"

[–] Cimbazarov@hexbear.net 56 points 1 week ago (1 children)

At this point I believe the democrats are deliberately trying to boost Trump's approval rating.

Why? So they justify their own right wing turn? They want to work across the aisle? Idk pick whatever reason you want.

I guess normalizing Trump does ward off any revolutionary potential in the population, so maybe it's not so farfetched.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 35 points 1 week ago

I take the opposite stance: Democrats are just this bad at politics.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 56 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The Democrats!

I want to say American's will forget quickly, but an app being banned by the government is unprecedented in the US so who knows

[–] culpritus@hexbear.net 52 points 1 week ago

Mr. Trump, tear down this firewall.

[–] fox@hexbear.net 48 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Watch trump choose to not enforce the ban and trigger a constitutional crisis for ignoring the sc

[–] OprahsedCreature@lemmy.ml 31 points 1 week ago

I assure you, I'm not salivating at the thought 😉

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 46 points 1 week ago (2 children)

This is proof that Trump has been bought by China. Is this the president you want running your country, my fellow Americans?

[–] MouthyHooker@hexbear.net 40 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I want Xi Jinping running this country WHEN WILL HE LIBERATE US FROM OUR OPPRESSORS?!?! xi

[–] xiaohongshu@hexbear.net 37 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

You don’t understand, Trump with his anti-China rhetoric makes him the most successful, the highest ranking, and the deepest undercover spy for the CPC.

As the saying used to be “only Nixon can go to China”, now in the 21st century: “only Trump can surrender America to China”. Both are Republican presidents, really makes you think huh.

[–] duderium@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

As the Chinese like to say, Trump is a Chinese man.

I've seen videos of American TikTokers crying and begging for Trump to save TikTok. agony-deep

i saw one doing a bit as the please-save-me "please save me mr trump" guy, it was pretty funny

I'm honestly curious what will happen. if he ignores the supreme court hell could break loose. but it could also be really hilarious to see the ensuing chaos. just an average evening in burgerland.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 57 points 1 week ago (2 children)

while it could cause some chaos , its important to remember that Trump can legally ignore the supreme court since they passed that law that presidents cant be charge for breaking the law during their term, but besides maybe some protests by dems i dont see any large scale action against him happening if he undo the ban

[–] FeelThePower@lemmy.dbzer0.com 21 points 1 week ago

ahahaha I completely forgot about that

[–] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

Also, it's not without precedent. Andrew Jackson famously ignored the Supreme Court when it helped him genocide more indigenous tribes

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 45 points 1 week ago

american government routinely ignore the laws shrug-outta-hecks

[–] mar_k@hexbear.net 38 points 1 week ago (2 children)

https://www.wired.com/story/how-to-get-around-the-us-tiktok-ban/

The company said in the days before the law took effect that it planned to make the app inaccessible to US users—a level of cooperation and accommodation that the outgoing Biden White House called a “stunt” on Saturday afternoon. Even if TikTok itself had obligations under the law, the Biden White House had signaled that it did not plan to enforce the ban before Trump took office on Monday.

lmao

also, VPNs won't wok either

[–] MelaniaTrump@hexbear.net 30 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

How is it a stunt when the law Biden signed is literally

As of January 19, the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act will make it unlawful for companies in the United States to provide services to distribute, maintain, or update the social media platform TikTok

powell-propaganda

like what did he think would happen on his last day in office when you’re banning a treat?

[–] mar_k@hexbear.net 18 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

the law was enacted but not enforced yet, but they decided to enforce it upon themselves, before they legally had to. last week biden said he'd leave the fate of the enforcement in trump's hands, in an attempt to save face i guess

stroking trump's savior complex like this will probably double the chances of him actually following through tbh. smart move from tiktok

[–] NonWonderDog@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

But "enforced" means what, international arrest warrants and sanctions against bytedance employees? Corporate fines? I honestly don’t know, but we generally don’t describe people following murder law as "enforcing a self-ban on killing people."

Biden White House had signaled

What, like a light in the sky? I love the implication that they should have broken this law because porky slightly hinted they wouldn’t get upset about it

Shutting down TikTok as a joke wasn't ok.

[–] Hohsia@hexbear.net 34 points 1 week ago (2 children)

:0 apparently looks like Facebook has a trail leading to a potential purchase

How do we get people to abandon these platforms? Like what’s the first step to planting the seed because we’re legit on the path of 3 corporations owning everything tech. Already lost that battle once with food conglomerates

Such a helpless feeling because tech bros have infected all aspects of our lives, they keep infecting our lives to even further extents and only annoying mfs like me seem to be care. Legit had a conversation with a friend today who did the whole “don’t bully people we’re all just trying to get by and enjoy some fun”

Don't think it's a problem that gets fixed until there is a DoTP. Don't think it's an essential tool for getting there either.

People react to the tangible benefits over ideas. We can say religion is the opiate of the masses, but it's the institution that dominates mutual aid, addiction services, bereavement and prisons. Finding people at their most desperate and rewiring their brains with hopeful experiences that lead to fanatical devotion.

Tech companies can only come so close with their multi-billion dollar algorithms. FOSS and decentralised efforts have entirely missed the mark by assuming that the lack of this sophistication is "a feature, not a bug". This doesn't appeal to most people. They want that dopamine fix from the algorithm. They want simple, intuitive tech, and TikTok reinvented the TV for them in a way Western tech pathetically couldn't replicate, so they had to buy them out.

Let it happen. The "seed" is the social infrastructure we must build to deal with more important things like food, medicine and housing.

[–] stigsbandit34z@hexbear.net 25 points 1 week ago

Bravo democrats!

[–] macabrett@lemmy.ml 24 points 1 week ago

I can see how if I had any inkling that the democrats were "good guys", this would upset me, but its honestly really funny seeing the most obvious own-goal in history happen over a really long period of time where any one of them could have noticed what was happening and course corrected.

[–] psyklax@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I read a flippant remark without proof that TikTok gave trump $100million. Anyone got corroboration of that claim? I want to shove it in someone's face.
