Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

-- Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed. --

-- All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. --

-- If you are citing a twitter post as news please include not just the twitter.com in your links but also nitter.net (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ or archive them as you would any other reactionary source using e.g. https://archive.today/ . Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed --

-- Mass tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken markov chain bot will result in a comm ban--

-- Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.--

-- Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned. --

-- Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society. --

Maus is an absolute masterpiece, and I suggest it to anyone. From recognizing the extent of the Holocaust to just dealing with aging parents or career difficulties it is a fabulous work of art.

Oh hell yeah

Also: Check out the graphic novels "Palestine" and "Footnotes in Gaza", both by Joe Sacco

Spiegelman is teaming with Sacco on this one. It should be extra good

Ooh, he’s the one who did safe area gorazde. I bet these are also really well done. Definitely going to have to check them out.

Spiegelman’s work on Gaza — if and when it is published — would join a string of books about the Oct. 7 Hamas terror attack on Israel and the ensuing war.

Gotta keep that pro-Israel framing. Classic overton window shit.

The ending of the second book was so so so good.

Tap for spoilerhis holocaust surviving father still showed racist attitudes to other minorities.

I think Spiegalman's experience with his parents is more universal than we know. You have these extraordinary people (Holocaust survivors), but who are shitty parents and assholes in general. But if you try and resolve these issues, they bring up their experience. How do you respond to "I survived the literal Holocaust" when you're trying to talk to your dad about groceries?

My dad had similar problems with his parents that's resulted in generational trauma. My grandfather was in the Filipino Resistance during WWII and became a really bad alcoholic after the war due to undiagnosed PTSD. I can just imagine my dad being 6 years old and asking for a bike, then my grandad exploding on him with "What the fuck do you need a bike for, you little shit? Your uncle didn't have a bike when he died in the goddamn Bataan Death March! If he managed to walk 65 miles while starving, you can walk your ass to school!"

(Yes, one of our in-laws died in the Bataan Death March. I cannot imagine the survivor's guilt my grandfather experienced, not to mention all the war crimes)

Sorry this is late but I relate to you too.

Great grandpa from my mom's side was a Holocaust survivor. Great grandpa from my dad's side was a Yugoslav partisan. Both were misogynists and pretty patriarchal.

Dad as a civilian escaped the Bosnian war to Serbia very late and saw his second and youngest brother die. He can be kind of a dick too, plus that Serbian right wing politicians are planning to get back the mandatory military service he's somehow fully supportive of It. Even though he served the Serbian army back in 2003. He's also pretty patriarchal and kinda racist. Told my sister like my mom told me to "not marry or start a familly with people outside of our race". linus

It's a complicated situation all around.

Ye and Joe Sacco will be working on it, too.
