More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

Where are kids seeing ads these days? Is this just for people who watch tv rather than streaming, or would this include any sort of product placement you see in streamed shows? Honestly, it'd probably be a lot more effective (and better for adults too!) if we just taxed the shit out of junk food.

Cool, I'd argue that alcohol and gambling are the more damaging to society, can we ban ads for those too?

Guidance is also being published today to provide more detail on which food and drink categories will be covered by the regulations

It will be interesting to see how that guidance is a. interpreted, and b. bypassed.

Ban the junk...not the pictures of it.

Tax the junk. This deters people from buying it and helps to offset healthcare costs.

Every child will be blinded in one eye and forced to only walk down a high street with the blind eye closest to the shop front so they can't see the Fried Chicken and Pizza sign.

Amputate little Jessica and Johnny's legs and give the severed legs to wounded veterans. Now the children can't go into the fast food joints unaided.

Cut off baby Simon and Louise's hands so they can't eat as many chips or pizza in a given amount of time.

These and many other positive solutions will be pioneered by this government to cut obesity.

Everything except make sure every household has parents that can cook, have enough to fill a fridge and cupboards with decent food and they have the time to sit together and eat. Not parents run ragged trying to hold down three jobs to barely put the basics on the table and only have time to throw a takeaway at the kids because they're too tired/overwhelmed to cook.

Tax is a diminishing return; we learned in the nineteen seventies that 97% tax rates don't help raise revenue because only the poor pay taxes. When the top taxes were reduced to 40%, the revenue went through the roof because there wasn't enough saving in avoiding the tax to make it worthwhile.

If you don't know your history, you're condemned to repeat its mistakes.
