Summary

Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign has reignited fears among undocumented migrants with promises of “mass deportations” and migrant communities are bracing for uncertainty and a new wave of nativism.

His administration plans to target those deemed public safety or national security threats, potentially reinstating workplace raids and using military resources.

Advocates warn that “collateral arrests” could sweep up migrants without criminal records.

Many, like “Dreamers” protected under DACA, fear family separations, while others, such as Carlos in NYC, hope Trump’s economic policies might benefit them.

"A lot of Latinos, those who can vote, did so because they think he [Trump] can improve the economy. That would be very good for us too," said Carlos, an undocumented Mexican who lives in New York City.

To trump, every immigrant is a criminal.

Saying "the legal ones are welcome" is a smokescreen.

[–] SoleInvictus@lemmy.blahaj.zone 12 points 3 days ago

"The legal ones are welcome" is the "there will be exceptions for rape and incest" of anti-immigration rhetoric. It was always a lie meant to placate those with a few remaining shreds of a conscience.

Except his wife, I'm sure. She's one of the "good ones".

Like the German version of Nazis before them, they aren't coming for their biggest target first. They're coming for their political opposition, the "abortionists", the atheists, the drug users, the mentally ill...

RFK Jr.:

"I’m going to create these wellness farms where they can go to get off of illegal drugs, off of opiates, but also illegal drugs, other psychiatric drugs, if they want to, to get off of SSRIs, to get off of benzos, to get off of Adderall, and to spend time as much time as they need — three or four years if they need it— to learn to get reparented, to reconnect with communities,"

Re-education camps, huh.

Oh yes, just "the bad hombres". /s

So, the leopards are coming for the faces, huh? Who would've guessed?

[–] circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org 11 points 2 days ago

Seeing a lot of voting blocks which apparently were clueless as to what they were voting for. The leopards won't care.

I get that TikTok, YT Shorts, and FaceBook slowly removes attention span, but how the fuck does it cause Amnesia for everything that happened before 2020?

Trump literally removed holding time limitations and changed the Criminal Only ICE focus of previous administrations so they could put women and children in cages deport children alone to random South American nations citing some ancient treaties.

This already fucking happened. All of it.

Do they not realize that he and his core audience believe the greatest crime a person can commit is not be born white?

[–] HelixDab2@lemm.ee 141 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Anyone that thinks that it's going to be only 'criminals' that get deported forget that crossing the border without documentation is a crime. Yeah, it's a misdemeanor, but it's still a crime, and the Trump administration is still going to deport them when they can.

[–] PhilipTheBucket@ponder.cat 88 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Adjudicating whether or not someone is guilty of a crime, or in the US illegally, requires a trial. Doing that for millions of people all of a sudden within a system that’s already backed up by more than a year is completely impossible.

In other words, they are absolutely talking about deporting innocent people of the wrong ethnicity without any attempt at due process, and anyone who thinks different is living in a dream world. And then, once they’re done with that batch, they plan to move on to other classes of undesirables.

[–] HelixDab2@lemm.ee 52 points 4 days ago (3 children)

requires a trial.

Not for people that are undocumented. People that are not in the us legally get hearings, but that's policy rather than law, IIRC. Due process gets a little weird here, because the process in question isn't a matter of law or the constitution.

Regardless - it's not going to go well for anyone that thinks that he doesn't mean them.

The denaturalization concept--stripping naturalized citizens of citizenship--is fa, far scarier than deportation. Once you can strip citizenship from a naturalized citizen, and once you've eliminated birthright citizenship, you've got a roadmap for stripping citizenship from anyone.

Maybe they're going to hold them under detention while trying millions and millions of people. Might need to build new detention facilities, of course, some kind of camps where they can concentrate the population. It's going to take a long time too, so in the name of government efficiency they can lease them out to businesses and farms for labor while they await their trials. Work sets you free.

you all understand this is about racism, right? this is a giant dog whistle for rounding up non-white people and getting them the fuck out of their white nationalist dream.

its not about crime, or which immigrants are good or bad. its about kicking out the brown peoples. its easy to manipulate racist voters. they are all ignorant cowards.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 49 points 4 days ago (7 children)

i think there's so much discourse about this since Latin men voted, on the whole, for trump. there is a non zero number of people who, if trump implements his border control plan, voted for their own deportation

[–] originalucifer@moist.catsweat.com 39 points 4 days ago (1 children)

also, white people dont own a monopoly on racism. some of the most racist people i know are also 'legal' immigrants of a minority population.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 34 points 4 days ago (3 children)

no one hates immigrants more than an immigrant who made it

i've heard that quote a few times. but i think it's on the whole sadder:

no one hates the poor more than a poor person who thinks they made it

I'm still trying to understand this belief that he is good for the economy. He's a failed business man who bankrupted a casino. His successful businesses are all grifts and money laundering. To say nothing of how our economy tanked after 4 years of his failed trade wars and 2+2=7 tax plan.

Remember the old maxim: "no one hates new immigrants more than old immigrants"... Their fellow legalized immigrants supported this outcome as well

How can anyone listen to Trump's racist rants about shit hole countries and walk away thinking "he doesn't mean me"? He absolutely means you. There's about to be a whole lot of faces meeting some very hungry leopards.

I'm worried they're going to start raiding schools and daycares as well in order to force parents to turn themselves in or just to be malicious. A lot of children are going to be separated from their parents.

What part of "mass deportations" do people not understand? Trump told us what he's going to do. His cabinet pick told us what he's going to do. They're going to do it.

Good luck with that. If you voted for him you're an even more gullible dipshit than seems possible.

[–] Dragonstaff@leminal.space 7 points 3 days ago (12 children)

It is absolutely disgusting how many people are letting their disappointment and fear turn into vindictiveness and anger.

They're undocumented immigrants. By definition they didn't vote for him, and you should really do some introspection to figure out why this is the first thought you had.

[–] IamSparticles@lemmy.zip 6 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Naturalized immigrants, who do vote, often have family members and/or friends that are now on the chopping block. A lot of them voted for Trump thinking they were getting rid of the "bad" immigrants.

[–] KinglyWeevil@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Fascists also tend to take a "kill them all, let God sort them out" approach to things like this.

Here legally but the wrong shade of brown? Maybe your English is too accented? "Don't worry the arrest is just preventative, once they prove they're here legally (from the camp, with no resources, assistance, or access to their documentation) they'll be returned to their community."

Except they won't. Oopsie, gotta break a few eggs to make an omelette.

As someone posted in another thread, the mass deportations of Mexicans in the late 1920s/early 1930s ended up deporting American born Mexicans as well. So yeah, America deported actual American citizens because they didn't care or couldn't be bothered to check papers or whatever. Who's to say that isn't going to happen this time around?

Also, Trump said Latinos have a "murder gene," so he already thinks they're all criminals of some sort.

Ummmmm Conservatives already see them as criminals because they are here "illegal". By default all undocumented migrants are criminals.

There's only 11 million undocumented immigrants in the united states. The Trump Administration has pledged to deport 20 million. Which means they are going to be expelling American citizens from their home as well. It's not just going to be criminals. It's going to be anyone whose skin tone they don't like.

The article left me confused.

How does one pay income tax and file taxes while undocumented? Wouldn't you need a social security number, and hence be documented?

Could I create an imaginary person to file taxes for?

Leopards like all kinds of faces.

[–] Rakonat@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago

Any of these people who think Trump gives a damn about citizen status is a absolute moron who'se never paid attention to anything he said or did about immigration. He's a white supremacist and will push for policies that align to that. Illegals will get deported, but any excuse to revoke or ignore legal status of other non-whites will be aggressively pursued. He's already established concentration camps in his first term, despite those people being legal asylum seekers, and you can bet he'll do that again. And if his administration can't find legal means to remove them from the country they are going to find more excuses for brutal treatment with "unfortunate loss of life to those who don't cooperate fully"

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

They will be only for criminals... And to draft he'll classify anyone with skin darker than a certain tone as an "illegal" committing cringe by living in this country, then they'll go on to trans people, then gay people, then "anteefahs!" And so on.. there's a whole poem about it and everything.
