It’s so white I smell cheese whenever I open it. Someone showed me that like 1,500 people had blocked me there because all I do on bluesky is call liberals nazis for supporting genocide.

Yuck, I'm not gonna touch that place with a 10-foot pole then
bluesky is full of turbolibs but unfortunately mastodon has too many issues at this moment to really capture the audience fleeing twitter unless they're techies
(I say this as someone for whom mastodon is an ideal online social network but I understand why other people dislike it)
What's the major issues with Mastodon? I prefer it as well and works fine, but maybe I'm missing something.
Inability to consistently see other replies to a post makes already bad reply guy phenomenon worse, total tech worker hegemony, “PRs welcome” or “fork it then” dismissal of all criticism instead of actual engagement, lack of quote tweets removes means of marginalized people to call others to their defense.
it was ok but had to quit because too many people kept telling me to vote for joe biden
I'm not the first person to say this, but why not Mastodon? Why give control to another billionaire?
because people are so domesticated, they'd feel weird if there's nobody exploiting their data
It’s not even another billionaire, it’s Jack Dorsey, the twitter guy. I do not understand why anyone who dislike twitter cares about bluesky at all.
The entertainment industry (which includes most journalists in my opinion) loves twitter's centralized control. They don't hate twitter, they just hate the new owner.
they just hate the new owner.
Do they? If they did they would stop using that fascist infested hellhole
Jack Dorsey is no longer involved with Blue Sky, he got bullied off the site https://www.theguardian.com/technology/article/2024/may/07/jack-dorsey-quits-bluesky-board-urges-users-stay-elon-musk-x-twitter
I had no idea about this. Very funny but also infuriating. They all know exactly what they’re doing with this mealy-mouthed shit. “do not trust corpos” says the corpo suit. Incredible
Being centralized was kinda the whole point of Twitter. The problem people have is much less to do with the basics of how Twitter works and solely with and the changes he’s made
The only thing that surprises me is that Twitter (Sorry, X the everything app) has held on this long. At least set something up to auto post your posts on both while you transition over, but moving to BlueSky should be everyone’s obvious goal with the cesspit Twitter is now.
People like to be performatively stupid and pretend they can’t understand federation despite everyone having email addresses from different providers in exactly the same way.
iirc when someone blocks you their followers cannot see your replies, so it's a little bubble where you can't even dunk
The reason that people use Twitter is because celebrities are there. That's it. Our culture is so deep in this freaky celebrity worship shit that "your inane bullshit might be read by the person you saw on the TV" is the ultimate selling point. the only way a twitter clone beats twitter is if it convinces the celebrities to move
And the celebrities are only there cuz the people are there, chomping at the bit to see a social media manager tweet out a commercial for Beetlejuice 3. The only way mass migration to another platform happens is if Twitter genuinely goes offline for a sustained period.
No all the worst liberals from Twitter moved to bsky, it's terrible
Idk about english-speaking bluesky. But I checked it out when Twitter was banned and pretty much all Brazilians who weren't neonazis went there (it was the only way I was going to see some Brazilian news outlets), it seems to be an ok twitter clone.
Is Blue sky federated? It was supposed to be, right? Or was that just threads?
It’s using its own protocol. So we are basically in an early race of competing federation standards
Oh. Yay.
Not sure, I have been seeing more links recently tho. Admittedly I have an account, but have only used it once to lurk a bit.
At this point the only social media I use is Hexbear and I have a Mastodon account on a server my friend runs. I barely go on Mastodon either tho, I'm just not sure it's the right format for me. I think I need a platform that does long form posts and discussions just as well as it does short bits and memes.
I've also never felt any sense of community on any of the mainstream platforms, give me a forum and IRC any day.
Nope.
I think the news mega is a good indicator -- as long as 99% of the links to "Twitter-like" social media sites are still Twitter links, then it isn't being replaced any time soon.
People were predicting the imminent doom of the site 2 years ago, and yet despite all the actions Musk has taken to worsen its chances of survival, it just keeps going.
And if Trump ends up returning to it, it might bounce back from the sheer attention he draws.
Behold: the power of monopoly.
Libertarians say monopolies naturally go away due to competition lmao.
My only social media is here, and on Reddit occasionally. That said, does bsky offer something mastodon doesn’t? Is it easier to use? Which reaches further?
I’m really curious since I don’t use any of it, but I’d have to imagine there is an actual answer.
It's trying to be twitter and twitter was never good so the best it can hope for is to be dogshit like twitter always has been
BlueSky got like 100K new signups in a day when Twitter announced it would let all posts be used to train the Grok AI. Artists are starting to migrate specifically, but even a lot of my friends finally shut down their Twitter accounts. There's extensions that help you find your Followed people on Twitter under their BlueSky handles. It sucks because it's still a big corporate platform, but it's at the very least better than Twitter.
