Perverts Guide to Ideology

MODERATORS

I primarily like psychological and sci-fi films, movies like

Gattaca: mostly love the colors, cinematography, props, and general feel of the suspense of being caught.

Bladerunner: again I like the colors and the stellar cinematography, props and sets are really good.

The Machinist: similar to the movie Enemy, I consider this to be one of my favorite films, the score is really fascinating but I love the silence in these films, there’s also a darkness almost like dream like / night mare like feeling to them I can’t describe but I say recommending films similar to these films would be nice.

Suspiria: another one of my favorite films, the use of color is great, I like the slow progression and the relationship between characters. The acting is really good too. I have to give my respects to the original that came out in the 70s/80s as the sets are spectacular but the story is vastly different. I prefer the newer adaptation it feels like it compliments the time it was set in well.

Just a few of the films I want recommendations for thanks for helping

Bladerunner 2049, imho a rare sequel that's even better than the original

Mulholland Drive

Manhunter- there's psychological stuff and it looks incredible.

Redline

Michael Clayton you might maybe like

It's a tv show but Scavenger's Reign

Maybe you'll like Amarcord for the colors

Nightcrawler

[–] DampSquid 4 points 1 month ago

Scavenger's Reign was so awesome!

[–] RandomGen1@lemm.ee 3 points 1 month ago

Redline bangs in the club for sure

Someone else mentioned Perfect Blue as an anime film that is very solid in the psychological category here.

I also really like The Thing (1982) for a slight psychological thriller/horror pick

Nausicaä is a gorgeous Studio Ghibli film with some post-apocalyptic sci-fi stylings

Dredd is a very over-the-top dystopian sci-fi action film, gorgeous use of color at times, certainly not a very high brow pick, but I enjoy it a fair bit (CW: >!Imagined rape!<)

Redline rocks

You might like Annihilation

[–] Forbo@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

God damn I love this movie.

Moon (2009)

I don't really remember what it was about tbh but the vibe was kind of similar to gattaca

[–] Red_sun_in_the_sky@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

I highly recommend Bacurau. It's a Brazilian film. Very unique movie I've never seen anything like it before.

I'd also recommend watching it without watching the trailer or even reading up on what the story's about, it'll hit better that way.

Color Out of Space

Suspiria is a favorite of mine, and a lot of other Dario Argento movies are enjoyable for me. Deep Red, Phenomena.

Death Race 2000

Aniara

[–] DampSquid 1 points 1 month ago

Oh man, Aniara was ace. Haven't seen anyone mention it before.

Hard to be a god.

Russian scientists travel to observe a planet with a species identical to humans, but whose society never progressed from feudalism.

It’s not an easy watch, but it’s a brilliantly made film.

Solaris, Harakiri, Mishima, Brazil, The Double Life of Veronique, Belle de Jour, A Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove.

[–] Red_sun_in_the_sky@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh strangelove really rules. I love George C scott.

[–] anarchoilluminati@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Oh, he was awesome in that. I actually only just watched Dr. Strangelove for the first time a few years ago but, damn, I love it!

It's such a subtle anti-US/NATO/Nazi movie too. Soviet Union seems extremely reasonable. Most libs don't even notice, but that's typical I guess.

Yeah its very well done. Its also has this element of a false flag and deniability.

It does show ussr as a country that has to contend with the rabid imperialist west. Even the bombers and the way they talk when entering ussr is perfect.

Just torrent everything on my Liked list on Letterboxed.

[–] DampSquid 2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Most of these aren't really sci-fi, but are at least visually stunning:
The Fall (2006) (directed by Tarsem Singh),
2001: A Space Odyssey (Kubick, obvs),
Hero (2002) (by Yimou Zhang),
House of Flying Daggers (2004) (also by Yimou Zhang),
Tears for Sale (2008) (from Serbia, by Uros Stojanovic)

[–] Egon@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I think you would enjoy "Nightwatch" (1994).
Probably also Green Room.
I also wrote out this list a while ago

[–] Red_sun_in_the_sky@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I don't watch much scifi. Here's some stuff off the top of my head.

Naked by mike leigh

Perfect blue

Twin peaks (not a movie, but close to dreamlike nightmare)

Inland empire

Mandy

Some one mentioned Kubrick. So I will throw in,

Eyes wide shut

2001

[–] smallpatatas@lemm.ee 1 points 1 month ago

Ex Machina might fit the bill

[–] TheModerateTankie@hexbear.net 1 points 1 month ago

I think you might like Mandy (2018)
