For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Bridges of Madison County (1995), the much-acclaimed adaptation of Robert James Waller’s 1992 novel of the same name. Clint Eastwood goes to a rural Iowa farm and starts schmoozing Meryl Streep, who is already married. Drama ensues as their romance escalates. Pretty much the definition of Oscar bait, but hey, we’ve never watched any of Clint Eastwood’s filmography and this one has excellent reviews everywhere, so let’s check it out. Probably one of your mom’s favorite films.

After that is The Great Silence (1968), the magnum opus of the second-most-famous Spaghetti Western director, Sergio Corbucci, whose film Django (1966) we previously watched. In the chilly Western winter of 1898, a mute gunslinger defends a widow from a gang of sociopathic hitmen out to kill her, and the usual assortment of threats and gun duels follows from there. Dudes are gonna have to rock. Great reviews for this one, so we’ll give it a whirl.

Just started this, dunno how it'll turn out. But it's kind of neat to see a depiction of later samurai, long after their swords had rusted in their scabbards and they had to find real jobs. It seems pretty light hearted so far. Crappy jobs, every day heroism, overbearing grandparents, and dreams that are just out of reach.

For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, I still have a few leftover horror movies from October uploaded, so let’s keep the ball rolling with Titane (2021). It is a French body horror centering on a woman who, as the result of a childhood car crash injury, has a titanium plate fitted into her head; as an adult, she develops a fetish for cars, which leads her on a strange and often-surreal journey. Oh, and did she mention she’s also a psychopath who likes killing people? A whole lot of bloody encounters ensue from there. Director is Julia Ducournau, who also did Raw (2016), which we watched a couple of weeks ago; this is her other most-well-known film.

After that is Paterson (2016), a bloomer rom-com from Jim Jarmusch, about a New Jersey couple consisting of a bus driver (Adam Driver) and his artist wife, and their slice-of-life antics as they follow their work routines and maintain their relationship. A simple, warm movie about love. Yep, that’s it. Despite that, it has received quite a bit of critical acclaim. Jarmusch has a good record on Hextube, so let’s give it a whirl.

SHAME ON YOU IF YOU NEED TO CLICK THIS.It's President Bartlet in 1970 on an episode of Hawaii Five-O.

Fashion in the 1970s* was a trip. He's wearing matching odd blue trousers.

Ninja edit.

*I just realized it was probably filmed in 1969. So that's another feather in Bartlet's cap. He was in the fashion avant-garde.

For this Wednesday Super Slop Night, I was asked for more horror, despite the passing of Halloween. November 6 is close enough, isn’t it? We’ll start with X (2022), a slasher about a group of 1970s youths who go to the middle of nowhere in Texas to make a porno. Unfortunately for them, the old people hosting them discover what they are doing, and suddenly, the crew starts being brutally murdered, one by one. Will anyone be spared? I guess we’ll find out. Director is Ti West, who also did the film’s prequel, Pearl (2022), which was released a few months afterward. I guess we’ll have to watch that one, too.

After that is The Adventures of Chatran (1986), the Japanese tale of a kitten and a dog who make their way through the wilderness together, and then are separated, and then risk everything to find each other again. It contains no dialogue except for some voiceover narration. It looks adorable. In 1989, it was cut down, rescored, and given a new, snarkier dub under the title The Adventures of Milo and Otis. We are watching the original, unabridged Japanese version, featuring its original score by the renowned Ryuichi Sakamoto. This is the most notable work of director Masanori Hata, who also worked on Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989).

CWs for The Adventures of Chatran:

  • The film is subject to a long-standing rumor that a whole bunch of cats died during production. This claim is probably bullshit, as no investigations have turned up any evidence, and both American and Japanese animal-rights groups signed off on it. Nevertheless, some of the stunts in the film probably scared the animals.

  • Animal corpses (not real ones.)

I'm disappointed it took over a week for this news to reach me! Hell, I'm disappointed I didn't hear about this movie before it premiered! This is HUGE for the Deaf community of Norway and really the world in general. Actual theatrical feature films where most or all of the dialog is in a sign language, where ≳95% of the cast and crew are Deaf, are already incredibly rare for more widely-used sign languages. Certainly even more rare for a sign language like Norwegian Sign Language, which, let me remind you, is the first language of only about 4,000 people (and second language of ~11,000 people)

After avoiding anything Marvel for 16 years, and the films aren’t what I would call good, but the character of Black Widow is just a blatantly flawed. First, her name: Natsha Romanoff. It should be Romanovna. Second, she war born in 1984. She was in the KGB. The USSR dissolved in 1991. ????

For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Laapataa Ladies (2023), a comedy about two arranged brides in rural India who inadvertently swap places on a train, and the wacky antics that ensue from there, including some satire of Indian gender relations and the caste system. This is by far the best-known film to date of Indian feminist director Kiran Rao, and received excellent reviews, so let’s check it out.

Next is Kiss Me Deadly (1955), a noir-thriller about a man who picks up a female hitchhiker, only for the car to be ambushed and the woman tortured to death. The dude goes on a rampage of revenge as he seeks to get to the bottom of the conspiracy, which centers around a briefcase containing a nuclear bomb. Everyone seems to want to get that damn briefcase, so the protagonist joins in the action. Director is Robert Aldrich, who is best-known for Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962), though this is considered arguably his magnum opus, and one of the best noirs of the 50s.

Saw The Substance last night. There was a boomer couple sitting a couple rows down, and I whispered to my wife “think they’ll walk out?” And she mentioned that they didn’t know what the movie was, because she had seen them choosing the movie sorta at random at the box office, after considering two other movies.

So I was sure we were in for a treat, because I had heard the movie was pretty gnarly. Well boy was I disappointed:

Tap for spoilerThe Substance is a boomer movie! It’s not about unrealistic beauty standards, it’s about how you do everything for your ungrateful kids and they turn around and eat you alive (literally). The boomer couple looked squeamish during the scenes with teeth and fingernails coming off, but I was also squeamish about that, and they made it through to the end, finding it funny like I did.

Night ruined!

Jokes, movie was pretty good, very clever style/audio, and some good absurd body horror. I was expecting to be more grossed out, but maybe I’m more desensitized than I thought, it felt more cartoonish in terms of gore so it was easy to chuckle at.

I have never seen this movie and I'm wanting to check it out because I'm trying to figure out how to deal with living life in full view of a genocide. I hope it's not full of liberalism, anyone want to comment? please use spoiler blocks, comrades.
