On this day in 2013, Turkish protesters began occupying Gezi Park to oppose its demolition, an act with led to widespread protests and strikes with approximately 3,500,000 participants, 22 deaths, and more than 8,000 injuries.

The wave of civil unrest across Turkey began after the park occupation was violently evicted by police, who used to tear gas, pepper spray, and water cannons to try and break up the protests, injuring more than one hundred people and hospitalizing a journalist.

The protest quickly grew in size - by May 31st, 10,000 gathered in Istiklal Avenue. In June, the protests became national in scope and transcended any particular demographic or political ideology. Among the wide range of concerns brought by protesters were issues of freedom of the press, expression, and assembly, as well as the alleged political Islamist government's erosion of Turkey's secularism.

Millions of Turkish football fans, normally divided by intense sports rivalry, marched in unity against the government. Protesters displayed symbols the environmentalist movement, rainbow banners, depictions of Che Guevara, different trade unions, and the PKK and its leader Abdullah Öcalan.

On June 4th, Taksim Dayanışması (Taksim Solidarity) issued a set of demands that included the preservation of Gezi Park, an end to police violence, the right to freedom of assembly, and an end to the privatization of public spaces. Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç met the group on June 5th and rejected these demands.

Erdoğan blamed the protests on "internal traitors and external collaborators", demonizing his political opposition as the former. Despite the popular mobilization, Erdoğan remained in power and no major concessions were won from the government.

i was out in the town centre the other day and saw some anarchists staging some sort of protest. and i was like, fuck yeah! free palestine! until i got closer and saw that it wasn't the ancom flag, it was a different half black half red flag that had some yellow symbol on it, and a bunch of people with ukraine shit. like bestie its been 2 years lmao, how do they not know its joever? genuinely, why the fuck are you wasting your weekend for a country being used as a nato pawn that we all knew never stood a chance in the first place?

also, given that its a symbol being used for the ukraine i assumed it was some fash shit. i got home, googled it, and its the flag of the ukrainian insurgent army - and guess who they were shooting at during ww2? not the fucking germans agony-shivering

I miss the old days when "You're just being paranoid there aren't fascists behind every bush!" was a plausible thing to say in NA before like..., all the masks came off at once.

Lmaoooo I’m reading some old Norton anthology of American literature and liberals have always been extremely cowardly

John brown’s raid at Harper’s ferry? Liberals agreed with the idea behind it but the optics were bad

Ralph Waldo Emerson’s message to Martin Van Buren imploring him to rethink Indian removal? Liberals agreed, but there was nothing that could be done 🥺

Lincoln voting against abolition in 1846? Uwu it could threaten the Union 🥺

And on and on and on. It’s always been about a power struggle

Amazing how nothing has changed in this country that is demonstrably beyond hope

I started reading Settlers. The first chapter was an easy enjoyable read, making clear points, citing Marx multiple times, not using many and difficult or outdated words. Here is a well formatted epub. Sadly the archive.org scans are as always a mess in epub.

The first chapter had a class analysis of early settler society and listed how all branches of it's economy tied into slavery, supplying ships for the slave trade and contracting slave work from slave-owners.

Here is a quote that I liked

When we point out that Amerika was the most completely bourgeois nation in world history, we mean a four-fold reality:
(1) Amerika had no feudal or communal past, but was constructed from the ground up according to the nightmare vision of the bourgeoisie.
(2) Amerika began its national life as an oppressor nation, as a colonizer of oppressed peoples.
(3) Amerika not only has a capitalist ruling class, but all classes and strata of Euro-Amerikans are bourgeoisified, with a preoccupation for petty privileges and property ownership the normal guiding star of the white masses.
(4) Amerika is so decadent that it has no proletariat of its own, but must exist parasitically on the colonial proletariat of oppressed nations and national minorities. Truly, a Babylon “whose life was death.”

Especially this

Amerika [...] was constructed from the ground up according to the nightmare vision of the bourgeoisie.

CW: mental health sadposting

spoiler

Got in touch with an old lover who peaced out without much explanation like 7 years ago. I never held it against them, they've got real bad mental health problems, this sort of thing happens. It still hurts, but it's the nature of the disease, sometimes you just drop out for a few years. And It's got me thinking how little of the last seven years I've been meaningfully present for. How much time I've been knocked out by illness and trauma. It's a lot of time. Other people's lives go on, they heal, they get sick, they have kids, the meet new friends, they get married, whatever. But my life, and A lot of other people like me, it just pauses one day, and then two or three years later you start to piece yourself back together, everyone's moved on, become more, and you're less than you've ever been. Shit sucks.

[–] bigboopballs@hexbear.net 14 points 6 months ago

yeah, I've been that way for like 17 years. I don't even know what to do anymore.

New rule, you don't get to pull the "Unalive" shit if you have a patreon The point of having a patreon as a youtuber is so you don't have to rely on youtube monetization.

People who use Discord and demand you do so are my least favorite type of person. I'm not going into your quirky gamer dungeon no matter who the FBI sends.

Like if you use Discord, stop. blob-stop

oh shit the blob fucker comes from there. I hate it here.

Came across a random Reddit comment that said, “Hasan Pikers fans got insane after October 7 to the point they put MAGA Republicans to shame.” Went into their posting history and saw comments on tankiejerk. One of which read, “ Oh don't worry. These people had no idea Imperial Core was a term before this recent Gaza flare up. They'll forget all about it by next year.”

Fucking lol and then a response saying the USSR was the imperial core. Liberalism really is something you need to break out of because it’s so heavily reinforced that people in it can’t see how stupid the conclusions they come to about leftism are.

Also surprised tankiejerk is anti-Palestine. I thought they’d do what some are doing and be pro-Palestine and saying it’s the same as Ukraine.

In a previous megathread I mentioned trying to restrain myself from telling everyone i meet to become an insulator. I was asked "doesn't it take skills to become an insulator" but saw the post too late and the thread was locked.

The answer to this question, of course, is no. You need to be physically capable of climbing a ladder and you should probably be ok with wearing a respirator most of the time. I don't wear one unless we're doing abatement but I'm a certified dumb fuck.

My main tool is a steak knife and a pair of scissors. I get to do basic geometry which is the most fun kind of math. The trade has a reputation for being the most fucked up weird people with a strong union.

Construction work sucks and isn't fun on the whole but of all the trades, insulation is far and away the best day to day average experience. The pay depends on the region but I make around $40/hr canadian now that I'm a journeyperson.

If you want me to get you in contact with your local union hall DM me I have a directory at home and I'll try to call them myself first

Although I'm glad Tiktok is allowing people to grow conscious of the crimes the US perpetuates internationally through foreign policy, especially with isntreal, I'm worried about the consciousness people are developing as they can still be un/mis informed and reluctant to develop greater understanding outside the platform.

It's so hard to see how intellectually incurious allistic people are. I need information like I need air.

sometimes I love just refreshing the main page and looking at the taglines, especially the ones from people with Hexbear Derangement Syndrome

"Please note that though hexbear.net claims to be “leftist,” their users’ primary focus is spreading right wing propaganda via strawman and red herring tactics, usually in swarms."

"At this point Hexbear is essentially co-opted by astroturfing terrorists"

"Hexbear really are GOP advocates, I personally think they’re a small community that has been prodded along and mentored by Pro-CCP foreign agents, bots, and bad faith actors to create political divide and discord while also increasing support of the CCP and their immediate allies, but that’s all just armchair theorizing at this point."

there's just something about liberal psychoanalysis that never fails to make me smile

you'd think we were all posting shitty impact font memes at each other with titles like "THIS IS SO TRUE!!" like the triple-divorced dads who haven't talked to their kids in five years do on pro-Trump sites but we're literally just like, in favour of Gazan children not being bombed and an end to unnecessary wars killing hundreds of thousands of people for no benefit whatsoever like in Ukraine

us: "I think the guy putting trade restrictions on Chinese green technology and not doing anything to constrain American fossil fuel industries might not actually care very much about the environment"

libs: "aha, so, my body language analysis of the Hexbear menace has revealed that they are an LLM psyop invented by a joint campaign by the GOP, Russia, China, and North Korea to spread propaganda on the lemmyverse"

people in breaking bad are CONSTANTLY drink-driving, but the writers didnt seem to notice. like hank will go to visit walter and skylar, have five beers and then drive home. or walt will go drink whiskey in a bar then drive home. and its never important but. that is not good guys. you cant do that

[–] Adkml@hexbear.net 19 points 6 months ago

It would be way more unrealistic for an American to say "wait I just had a couple drinks I can't drive"

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 17 points 6 months ago

This is probably one of the more realistic parts of the show. People do be drinking and driving.

I've been seeing too much actual anti semitism on social media. No the Jews do not control the banks and the media. No Mel Gibson doesn't have a point.

Goes without saying that Zionism and Israel can burn and that includes those who support it. I understand the anger, especially from Arabs but it's getting dangerous IMO

I've been trying not to cry over the genocide because I want to save my tears for when Palestine is free but god it's been so hard.

I also notice there's struggle to discuss Congo since there's no direct aggressors like with Palestine. So request to Free Congo with no material ways on how feel hollow to me.The liberator for Congo is the destruction of capitalism and subsequently hyper consumerism.

does anyone have any sources on that that "china invited everyone to see the 'uyghur camps', the west refused, but all the muslim countries went and said it was chill" thing? and/or adrian zenz being fucking insane? my lib friend has turned out to be suprisingly open to being chinapilled, but the whole ~genocide~ bullshit is a big stumbling block

suprisingly enough, trying to find things that counter US propaganda through google isn't working out well thonk

I kept losing to the green haired tankie and whenever I did they would laugh at me and rub my face in the carpet saying, "Learn to perfect guard, you stupid idiot"

Now that I escaped, they better crosscode their fingers they'll experience a quick death.

I'm sorry, but WTF is this headline?

"Red Bank man who died after pedestrian collision planned to build home for his mother"

I know the language in the news media around cars killing people skews towards blaming victims (usually pedestrians or cyclists), but this is the first time I've seen a crash referred to as a "pedestrian collision".
