At the beginning of the 20th century, Chilean workers had no social or labor legislation that favored or protected them. It was they themselves, through mutual benefit societies, resistance societies and mancomunales, who organized themselves to protect their associates and promote proletarian solidarity.

The Federaciรณn Obrera de Chile (FOCH) began as a grouping of railroad workers with a mutualist orientation linked to the Democratic Party. In the mid-1910s, saltpeter workers began to join and it acquired a national character. Likewise, the Democratic Party lost influence when the revolutionary ideas of the Socialist Workers Party led by Luis Emilio Recabarren, who later became the Communist Party, were imposed on the organization, and the Federation assumed an anti-capitalist and revolutionary attitude that was strongly manifested in the social mobilizations that characterized the 1920s.

However, the enactment of the social laws and the Labor Code, between 1925 and 1931, radically changed the conformation of the labor movement and workers' organizations. From then on, the unions and their federations debated whether to accept the new legislation and submit to its rules, as was the case of workers and employees in the state sector and large companies, or to continue with the classist and revolutionary discourse. The leadership of the workers' movement, which adhered to the latter line, was divided between three large organizations: the FOCH, linked to the Communist Party, the CGT (National Confederation of Workers), of anarchist inspiration, and the CNS (National Confederation of Trade Unions), of socialist origin.

In 1934, the violent repression by Arturo Alessandri's government of a national railroad strike was reacted by the unity of the different workers' organizations. Thus, the Unified Command that emerged from the strike was transformed into a Trade Union Unity Front, which organized a Trade Union Unity Congress in December 1936, giving rise to the Confederation of Chilean Workers (CTCH).

The strength acquired by the new workers' organization allowed them to form part of the political alliance that supported the candidacy of the radical Pedro Aguirre Cerda in the 1938 presidential election. The triumph of the Popular Front gave the CTCH a direct link with the new government, which, although it allowed it to grow as an organization, would later be the cause of its division and loss of prominence.

Indeed, at the end of the 1940s, the workers' movement, which was strongly linked to the Communist Party through the Confederation of Workers of Chile, was strongly repressed and weakened by the government of Gabriel Gonzalez Videla when he enacted the Law for the Defense of Democracy or "Damned Law". Consequently, the leadership of the workers' movement was taken over by employee organizations, especially in the public sector, which through the leadership of Clotario Blest managed to organize a new workers' confederation in 1953: the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT).

New line of thought, why does the "I wish I could afford to see a dominatrix sometime" lady keep talking to me?

We have some things in common, like leftism and interest in fictional lesbians and I got her addicted to Unjust Depths... but like, I am mostly incapable of holding up my end of a conversation, so without absurd infodumping from me, what it mostly is is lots of infodumping from her. I know bits and pieces about the political history of her city and country, the public transit system there, (she is autistic) specific dialect quirks from said city and country, tiny things about her ex, how badly her country sucks under social democrats, moderate wing.

I continue not to complain because A) I appreciate it when anybody talks to me ever B) if forced to bring my own topics to conversation, foot would be within mouth in like ten seconds. DO YOU WANNA HEAR ABOUT HOW FRONT MISSION 1ST IS ACTUALLY THE BEST SRPG EVER MADE AND WESTOIDS DON'T DESERVE IT AT ALL??? But it blows me away when people graciously hold up conversations with me, like why. Maybe this is why I keep drifting from people, because they finally realise I'm too painfully awkward to even talk to.

the laundry room attached to my building has been closed for like idk since September. I've been having to either do it at a friend's place or drive like 2 minutes away (i'm not walking, i'm too american) while hoping that all 4 of the machines in the closest other building aren't in use

last I heard was like 3 weeks ago they said they were "waiting on the floors to be done"

for like weeks now the floors have been done, machines are in there and plugged in, etc., but the CLOSED sign is still up and the door is still locked

i asked today and they were like "it's open, we sent out an email about it"

it's open, they just didn't tell anybody. I literally had a bonding "fuck the landlord" moment with a VERY angry man who was carrying his laundry through the parking lot like yesterday

Why the hell are the PS1 versions of Panzer Front and Panzer General - games which received 3/5 stars and 7/10 when they released - rated higher on Vimm's Lair than all time classics like Symphony of the Night and FF7!? Watch some gameplay of those things - no way in hell a slow ass wargame played with a controller is the best game ever made for the Playstation. I suspect that Nazis upvoted them because they're games where you play as a Nazi commander.

(my own rating of them knocked them off the top spot, lmao)

Anarchist coworker confidently but inaccurately telling me what she thinks State and Revolution says, but I read it with my party last week so I'm able to cite chapters and paragraphs that say the opposite of what she claims.

Is there some kind of funky socioeconomic interaction I'm not aware of and am misinformed about, or is Australia terrifyingly and publically hostile to immigrants? And I don't just mean the familiar sort of reactionary "fuck off we're full" shit

From what I can tell, the anti-immigration libs in Australia are saying that immigrants are being lured in by corporations to provide cheap labor which is driving down wages, and so their solution is to just...repel the immigrants? That does not seem to be addressing the root of the problem m8s

(Yes this is because I watched a Boy_Boy vid that had friendlyjordies in it and so I checked out said affable jordle's vids)

Like the ONE THING I can maybe agree with is that I don't want to see the delicate ecosystem of Australia get further developed to support expolitative businesses but thinking that immigrants is the problem seems like some classic USA hog thought

was there land redistribution after the Islamic Revolution? im reading a book from the 60s and the author might be exaggerating but mentioning peasants in Kirman at that time seems grim

So for years I thought I just didn't like anime as a form. All my friends watch anime. But I tried some of the more popular ones and didn't like any of them. I tried Death Note, and Monster, and Dragon Ball Z. On Brandon Sanderson's recommendation I tried Maria the Virgin Witch. I tried Attack on Titan. I watched some episodes of a random slice of life anime I've never been able to remember the name of. None of them were doing it for me.

Then I found the original GiTS movie. Then Standalone Complex, and the concluding SAC movie. I absolutely loved those. So I googled it to see where I could find more anime like these, and the result I found basically said "the feeble western mind only likes serial cop shows, so we made one and they flocked to it. But it wasn't super popular in Japan so we're not bothering to make more like it." I might have that wrong, but the gist of it was there wasn't anything else out there like SAC.

In the years since of course Netflix has begun releasing their own anime. Though I don't know if it's right to call them anime, really. I guess the look and the animation styles take a lot of cues from anime but as I understand it all those shows are written and created in the West, then they get Korean animation studios to actually make the shows. If that counts as anime then isn't The Simpsons also anime? But you know, Castlevania, DOTA: Dragon's Blood, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Blue-Eye Samurai.

All good shows, or at least I think so, but all written by Westerners aimed at Westerners. So even though I like those anime, or maybe anime-adjacent Western animation depending on how you look at it, I still feel like I don't really like anime. Before those shows started being made the only anime I'd found that I'd liked was GiTS and the original Full-Metal Alchemist. Kinda interested in trying out older stuff like Bubblegum Crisis or Legend of the Galactic Heroes. And on paper I should like Berserk, though I haven't tried it yet. Been meaning to read the manga and haven't gotten around to it yet.

But I have been watching Delicious in Dungeon and really liking it.

a coworker I liked well enough despite being a chud said some really abhorrent shit today, I guess no surprise there though

he literally said all Palestinians are terrorists and shit people and that's why 'everybody hates them' including 'all the arabs' and some other awful shit. I got the feeling he was trying to piss me off though because I kept talking about China Good and shit like that but idk. man.

I liked him well enough because we could at least both talk about how shitty the CIA and Democrats are, and he gave me a little flag from the East German Republic (I think he collects historical stuff, today he was telling me about a belt buckle from the Civilian Conservation Corps that he got) and he's always cheerful and helping me out with shit. But man, the hitler particles I was exposed to today might have been at a lethal level

I didn't even think to point out to him that a majority of people in Gaza are literal children because I was so taken aback by the manifestation of holden-bloodfeast

Man, a couple of my friends were just talking about their Zionist coworkers and Iโ€™m so glad I apparently picked a field where that isnโ€™t a big issue. The acceptable range of political opinion for biologists seems to be anywhere between โ€œElizabeth Warren wouldnโ€™t have let this happenโ€ and โ€œLet the streets run red with the blood of the imperialists and capitalists,โ€ and the few conservatives that are around know well enough to shut their fucking mouths.

I've seen multiple people respond to the protest with "if you care about the war so much you should go there to fight instead of protesting", which is such nonsense on so many levels that it is really testing my rule of assuming people generally believe what they are saying even if it is dumb

[โ€“] SpiderFarmer@hexbear.net 11 points 7 months ago (14 children)

I honestly do think on a level there's too much coddling of people with bug phobias. I'm sorry, but the way I see even vegans irl pre-disposed to smashing or torturing every tiny creature they see cause they think it's gross is just disgusting. There really needs to be more pushback against the whole "kill it with fire" nonsense, as even if you don't like bugs, that attitude tends to have a bit of a snowballing effect, especially if that person has a lawn and access to pesticides...

I'm normally more productively inclined on this matter and have helped people warm up to stuff like spiders and moths, but damn I can't have my customer service voice on all the time.
