Posting neat Chinese phrases whenever I feel like #16

木已成舟

(mù yǐ chéng zhōu)

Literally: “wood already become boat”

Figuratively: “what’s done can’t be undone”

Even if you don’t know Chinese, take a look at the first and last characters and you might still be able to make out traces of a tree and a boat. (We don't talk about the middle 2 characters 💀)

不足挂齿

(bù zú guà chǐ)

Literally: “not enough hang teeth”

Figuratively: “not worth mentioning; nothing to speak of”

Why settle for 1 when you can have 3:
张三、李四、王五

(and if you're wondering why they start indexing at 3, all I can say is it's a bit 乱七八糟)

前车之鉴

(qián chē zhī jiàn)

Literally: “front car[t] [’s] mirror”

Figuratively: “lesson to be learned from sb else’s mistakes”

鉴 is pretty spicy, its etymology goes something like mirror -> reflect -> scrutinize -> warning, the last of which is relevant here. The implication is that the car in front has crashed.

(bù cí ér bié)

Figuratively: “leave without saying goodbye; slip out; ‘take French leave’”

This is me but with China, since people just think of them as basically the same place.

抛砖引玉

(pāo zhuān yǐn yù)

Literally: “throw brick pull jade”

Figuratively: “this is just my dumb ass opinion but I'm putting it out here to start the discussion, in the hopes that someone will ~~correct me~~ be inspired to say something wise”

Everyone's learning Mandarin lol. I've been on and off for a few years but should get back into it, 亡羊补牢!

I've tried to learn the Arabic alphabet a few times but I just can't keep track of the dots. Are there other ways to group the letters that help learning?
