It's everywhere. From images, to videos, to Tiktoks, to adverts ... I'm over saturated with opinions, replays, player ratings, hyperbole and the like.

There's only so much you can take.

Example 1. The Newcastle goal vervus Arsenal. Never ending discussions on the decision. The hyperbolic nature of the punditry. The uneven opinions of the same people.

Example 2. Handball against Newcastle. Hundreds of videos all moaning, complaining over and over again. The same pundits complaining and restarting their opinion.

And now the new one - the ref not giving Man City an advantage in the Tottenham game. It starts all over again. The videos, the complaining, the shouting Tiktoks...

I just don't care anymore.

Rational discussions are gone, replaced with hyperbole and drama.

It's too much. I can't watch any football related content anymore.

The only thing to do is to shut it all out but the commentary is just as bad.

Why do you watch football related content?

What would happen if you just stopped watching after the game was done?

[–] championsound69@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Stop watching it then you fucking pussy

i’ve low key been getting into smaller leagues recently. Less drama and money, same sport. You’d be surprised too. The J-League is free on youtube, and it’s highly tactical and super entertaining. You’d never expect it from a league of that caliber but i enjoy it more than some CL/PL games

i thought players were also a lot more put together and organized than danish superliga/mls games (the other two smaller leagues i’m familiar with), even though those are generally considered better leagues and feature better players (though i still love watching both of those leagues too)

i still love the prem, and like others in this post, i ignore the punditry and hyperbole, and it’s still entertaining, but watching more local, grassroots football excites me more these days

I understand the train of thought, there was a certain innocence to football in the pre-internet era, like you'd turn the radio on and there would be shock news of Andy Cole joining Man United etc. nowadays nearly all transfers are leaked days in advance. Legendary goals would just be, well, legends rather than something you could just watch instantly on a mini computer pulled from pocket.

But of course back then I craved the access to stats etc we have now. Digging out newspaper cuttings or old VHS tapes was a right faff compared to the on demand info we have now.

Overall I think it's better to have the wall to wall coverage and choose to ignore it, rather than not have it at all.

It's also constantly primary school level discussion.

"Who is better, Ronaldo or Messi?"

"Can Haaland/Mbappe/Bellingham get better than Messi?"

"Is this guy overrated?"

Planet has 8B people, every single one of them is a football fan or knows a football fan. They aren't watching Real Madrid or Man City playing each week, many of them are watching a local team nobody's heard of. Many of them volunteer to hang around some no-name club every week to let the kids have some fun.

But no, we need more and more content about the absolute top.

[–] Habay12@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

You can just not watch all that crap and stop ruining it for yourself.

[–] Otherwise-Bell-5377@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I watch most of big games , but I rarely read or watch anything related to football, I have absolutely zero interest in following players on social media or knowing about their life outside the pitch.

During transfer window I try to read/watch more to see who is coming, but that is it, maybe you should try to disconnect a bit from football outside the match day?

[–] Layatollah@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Var has killed it for me

[–] notokkid@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I've been following football for over 20 years. I've been an Arsenal fan since I Titi was in Juventus. Hell, there's a pitch on a 2 minute walk from where I live (albeit a Macedonian regional league team plays there).

Maybe it's me, but I don't recall folks ever being too big on rational discussions when it came to football. There's always going to be drama when there's passion involved. There's always going to be smack talking, and pundits talking out of their ass or hilariously narrate like they're fucking Shakespeare.

[–] TheTackleZone@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Remember that the pundits are there purely to draw attention. It's why you get ex players like Paul Merson and Steve Nicol wittering on about nonsense. They are being paid to have a bad take because bad takes get social media clicks.

And the more it is done the more others do it. I understand why you're tired.

[–] NFTs_Consultant@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

You spend too long on social media

[–] Born_Transition2207@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

It's not the game, it's the internet. Enjoy the game and ditch the internet.

[–] ezee-now-blud@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Your problem isn't with football, it's with engaging in all the bollocks around it in media and social media too much

Ha! this post is hyperbole, and everything you are moaning about so dramatically can be solved by literally not reading or listening to your phone. It’s got nothing to do with the football on the pitch or the game itself. Get a grip.

[–] kiersto0906@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I was thinking the same thing. How ironic.

[–] spirotetramat@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Watch the game, and other highlights and then stop. It’s all click bait anyway for views and stupid statements made on purpose to wind people up.

[–] trashboatfourtwenty@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Good on you for coming to this revelation. Just keep it all in perspective and segment it in a relevant way to your life (which is more important than sport). Perhaps only watch games, (or just the recaps), don't obsess over results or players if it makes you unhappy or throws you into the churn of the 24-hour cycle of discussion, just let it go. You can still cheer and follow your team if you like, but make it a passive participation instead of engaging in the nonsense surrounding it. Unfortunately this can apply to most any hobby that isn't extremely insular, but at the same time a step back is always a good thing to me. Life is short and there is constant pressure from every angle to compete for our time (which translates into our money, the only motivation for any of it), and time is really all we have, so don't waste it.

[–] ___HeyGFY___@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I watch the matches and the post game coverage on TV. I will check out a Reddit post if it catches my eye.

Everything else can fuck off. Especially TikTok.

[–] Jackbees777@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Yep that’s because they love the drama rather than try just understanding more teams and talk about more players they all steal a living tbh

[–] Major_Smudges@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I agree with you to a certain extent - but at the end of the day there are just too many pundits constantly giving their opinions all over the TV. When I was a kid (70’s / 80’s) we had Match of the Day with Jimmy Hill on BBC and the Saint and Greavsy show on ITV - that was it as far as I can remember. And there wasn’t the endless talk about tactics and playing styles that dominates today - you just watched a game and enjoyed it, without trying to break it down and endlessly analyse it - I find it all a bit tiring, tbh.

[–] Hungry-Afternoon7987@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I watch highlights on YouTube, that's it as I'm usually in bed on a Saturday before motd finishes (the joys of being middle aged and boring).

I'd recommend the same. Cut out all the bs.

[–] ZaphodG@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

You can get your soul crushed in Championship where it’s invisible to the media and social media other than club supporters and local news. No VAR to complain about. All the refs are poor. The league is so inconsistent that most of the league is a month of good form away from promotion playoffs and a month of poor form from worrying about relegation.

[–] Meowskiiii@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Just stick to watching the games then?

[–] ButWhichPandaAreYou@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Ditch the Premier League, the corruption-fuelled spending and the constant media nonsense, and get a season ticket at your local non-league club. You’ll have a great time, make new friends and never need to worry about VAR again

[–] Wheelie_Slow@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Get off reddit for 1 year (I did) and the rest of the social media crap for ever. It is refreshing and now that I am back I am ready to switch off again.

[–] Old_Telephone_7587@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Who you follow?

[–] footyfan888@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Before social media I feel like being a fan of a thing was actually only down to just enjoying the thing, and perhaps any meet ups or clubs / groups / communities that enriched your enjoyment or brought you new friends on this basis.

Ofc now with all these social media platforms it can be constant bombardment and then make you feel like to be a fan of football you've gotta like those things as well.

You can just go back to enjoying football specifically, and cherry pick your feed or the groups you interact with if that would make you happier.

Watching the games and the pre & post game shows, the odd YT channel and Reddit is enough for me. You can curate more specifically for yourself too.

[–] CakieFickflip@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I mean you choose what you consume? Get off football Twitter and TikTok lol. Those sites are solely focused on engagement so that’s why everything is hyperbolic and crazy bait posts. Reddit can be a cesspool as well but at least most morons get down voted to the point you have to go out of your way to see their comments

[–] piwabo@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

The overwrought drama of the Prem does get fatiguing I have to say. That's part of what makes it great of course but also I get burnt out on it. I'm in Australia and taken to watching a bit more A League over the past few years because it's just got such a different vibe, much more laid back. Controversies happen but they don't seem to be held onto like grudges that never ever go away.

[–] DisciplineCapable409@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Social media is your problem, not football. Don’t watch the pundits, wait for motd on iplayer and just fast forward.

I don’t like idiots either, that’s why I don’t have twitter. Football is still class

[–] tamim1991@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Turn it on or turn it off. You decide.

[–] LandBetter2442@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Footballs boring it’s like a rollercoaster up down up down some teams just aren’t worth watching. Also you can sit there for 90 min and not a single goal I can’t be bothered with it

[–] harrybarracuda@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

The trick is not to take the opinions of idiots like Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher seriously.
Considering the utter rubbish they come out with most of the time, this isn't that difficult.
As for the decisions you mention, personally I'm amused how Eddie Howe is happy with VAR one week and then mysteriously against it the next. No prizes for guessing why.
And as for the "new one", if Haaland wasn't such a flat track pony and hadn't missed some sitters, the plastics would have been out of sight before the incident even took place.

[–] Numerous-Drawing8204@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Football at the top level has become a TV show that’s getting even worse now it’s going through a YouTubeification.

[–] LawProfessional6513@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I don’t think anyone’s gonna miss you bud but You’re constantly on Reddit commenting on football posts maybe stop doing that

[–] ClarkMeshey@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago
[–] taskkill-IM@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago (7 children)

How about instead of giving up football, just give up social media outlets?? They seem to be damaging the things you enjoy.

Watch football games but fuck the pre and post build up, fuck football related youtube videos, twitter and tiktok.. actually just fuck tiktok off altogether.

[–] AsianOnee@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

second this. I do not use Tiktok but I know it is full of hate speech under Chinese propaganda. There is nothing wrong with football from what op said. Maybe Ref is a problem but the bigger problem is the op obsession with social media.

[–] TehTriangle@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

The exact same can be applied to the news and doom-scrolling click-baity articles.

[–] st_v_Warne@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

This is exactly what I done.. Delete all other social media and tbf reddit has good discussions for the most part

“I can't watch any football related content anymore.“

There’s your solution.

[–] man_u_is_my_team@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I’m a United fan and obviously I’m falling out of love with the sport faster than most… but …

This whole American people doing clips on why Ten Hag’s philosophy isn’t as good as Arrigo Sacchi, when they are reading of a script and 5 months ago didn’t know what footie is…

The VAR over analysing EVERY ACTION after a goal is scored….

Players on RIDICULOUS contracts. I mean players always were on high money but nowadays certain footballers, like Mbappe or other top players can literally purchase a premier league club with their earnings…

It’s making players multi millionaires before they’re even starting their career trajectory….

The soul of football is dying.

[–] Xenikovia@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Probably consuming too much junk media, just watch the matches.

[–] Loose_Corgi_5@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Ok bye 👋.

[–] LordCommanderCam@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Seems like it's not football that's your problem...

[–] MrDarwoo@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Get off tik Tok for a start

[–] RickySal@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Just watch the games and don’t get on social media if you follow a lot of football related accounts that do that stuff that your describing. Including this subreddit tbh, sometimes I just watch the match and look at my FotMob app to check scores and that’s it.
