Skill fades over time, man.

Now my son whoops my ass at smash bros most of the time.

[–] PunkersSlave@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

You were prolly really good at q3a 20+ years ago when you could play 8 hours a day. I was too, lol.

[–] masonicone@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

If it counts I know how you feel.

Back in the day? I felt like a god at Unreal Tournament, I was so damn good that the LAN party I went too started doing things like slowing the game down in the host settings or doing big head mode all due to the fact that the guys at the LAN party would say, "Dude you are too damn good."

Now? I can't keep up with the kids playing Destiny 2 and god knows if I go to the Dark Zone in Division 2 I get mowed down in a heartbeat.

It’s not that you suck. It’s actually worse than that.

You’re old.

[–] ChangeConfident8139@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

The future is now old man - Malcolm in the Middle

[–] greywolfau@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

To be fair, Quake Champions plays very differently to how Q3 played back in the day.

I had a few rounds when Quake Champions first released. I was a very mediocre Q3 player, but routinely topped leader boards on QC.

When me and my older friends were playing Quake 2. I used keyboard only, page up and page down to Look up and down. My friends used keyboard and mouse. I won.

Reminds me of The Office episode where Kevin is talking about winning in the World Series of Poker and then loses to Phyllis on Casino Night.

Is Quake multilayer still going strong? Thats pretty damn cool.

[–] sweep_the_legs@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Go look up Quake Pro League, unfortunately this year was their last year

[–] Beginning-Pipe9074@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I spent a full night grinding through the campaign of jumpforce, in one sitting, so I got pretty good at it, I take it over a mates house the next day and she kicks the ever loving shit out of me without even knowing half the mechanics

Sometimes it just do be like that 🤣🤣

[–] Feelnumb@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Q3 arena slaps.

[–] asevans1717@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

The speed of each champion is different I don't remember that being a thing in Q3.

You probably started on Mario, your little savage probably started with Halo or Fortnite. We just can’t hang with that.

[–] MrlemonA@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Mario is way harder Tf are you talking about? 😂 old school games are some of the most unforgiving games. If you loose at Fortnite it’s because some sweat is playing against you if you loose all your lives in Mario you restart the entire game, no check points. Old games were crazy, especially the platformers

[–] DrAsthma@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Dude, same. I keep telling my kids they should try and compete in e-sports but they tell me they aren't THAT good.

[–] Anonymouse8888888@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Hahaha. I thought I was too! Turns out there were only like 100 of us playing; being the best of 100 isn't too difficult.

He's technically a part of you so really, it's you beating yourself.

[–] Mackankeso@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I guess he has played other arena shooters? The movement and aiming is far too different from fortnite or cs for a first timer in the genre to pull off

[–] NestroyAM@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I swear every guy in his 30s to early 40s thinks and claims they were “pro” at some sort of FPS game, because they were somewhat decent online and used to beat their 3-4 closest friends regularly.

It’s epidemic.

Chances are you sucked then too, then got old and slow and out of practice since.

[–] Embarrassed_Chest_52@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

watch that Dave Chapelle Street Hopz Clip an shape up. The children is our future? My ass I'm the future! xD

[–] Danominator@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I yearn for the day my kids can put up a fight in video games lol.

[–] bigloopa@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Does he play other shooters?

[–] Rimfrost_dk@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

In my younger days, early 20's, mid-'90's, I lived, to keep the story simple lets call it a dorm.. 1-2 people in each room, around 20 rooms.. As more started having PCs and gaming started being a popular hobby, it wouldn't take long before the hallway was full of LAN cables.

One time this group of youngsters (just a bit or few years max) was telling me how when they played UT (the original), this one guy completely dominated (regular deathmatch).. And I played unimpressed.. He went on and on how he had 4 to 1 KTD ratio every match, how he knew the map so much better, yada yada..

So, I briefly mentioned that I played it a bit as well (this is way way pre e-sport era, so no one was "a pro" and I would not say I was anywhere near "competitive standards, but I was generally more "hardcore gamer than most of my friends) and I too felt I had a small edge over others..

He challenged me to a 1v1, saying "show me what you got!".

5 rounds later, with me winning every single round with 4-5 times the kills score than him, I concluded that he was not THAT good, he was just "the best" when he played his friends. :)

A few years later, I got my ass handed to me by a 12 year old, in CS 1.6...

[–] Where-the-mods-at@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

When was the last time you played FPS’s at the same rate as ye progeny? Either it was “practice makes perfect” or “u suc bro”-but-not-really.

[–] ManonegraCG@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I thought I was a railgun pro and then found out that I got old and wasn't.

Champions really is a different thing altogether though, so there's that.

[–] Ste333@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Git gud with that rail gun dad.

[–] demex1985@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

When I started Q2 and 3 I was around 13 or 14yo and I took a lot of time to go through single player

Several hours

10years later it took about 45 min for a playthrough and even then I was far away from being pro. Having known people like SK Stelam, i knew my aim is far inferior to these guys who appeared to be real aimbots with shaft and railgun

In 10years ill challenge my son as well. If my wife doesn’t kill me before for letting him play 🤣

[–] LeviathanDabis@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

This is the gaming equivalent to the first time your kid whoops your ass in basketball (or insert other sportball game here).

It’s a humbling experience that’s lets you know age has finally caught up with you, but also that your kid is growing and realizing their own talents and abilities.

[–] galacticwonderer@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Younger kids have faster reflexes. Take a vyvanse and then play your son lol

[–] Inspirational_Owl@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Man I was actually really good at this game as a kid. But it's one of those games where the moment you even stop to take a temporary break from it you will lose skill instantly. I remember winning so many 1v1 matches though and have great memories of it.

[–] Hedhunta@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

QC is a shitty, shitty MTX based hero shooter. It has literally nothing to do with Quake outside of having the IP attached to it. Go play an actual Quake game. I recently had a LAN party with a variety of age groups from Z to boomer and I'm just as good at Q3 as I used to be... 2 or 3 games in and it all came back like riding a bike. The Gen Z kid was talking mad shit about being really good at shooters like the latest COD and Fortnite and I spanked the shit out of him.

[–] spekyr@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

I'll smash h 20 - 0 any time any where any map

[–] scytob@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

Nah, you just got old :-)

[–] masskonfuzion@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

You don't want to see what he'll do to you in laser tag...

[–] sweep_the_legs@alien.top 1 points 9 months ago

You probably haven’t touched FPS games in a while or you simply weren’t that great to begin with, I know plenty of former Quake 3 pros and none of their kids come close to them in Quake.
