The end goal must be an entire game made solely by AI. Don’t have to do much. Do players wanna buy a game made entirely by AI with adaptable elements using an engine that uses AI?

[–] HamFishery@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Imagine if they actually invested this into the enemy AI...

[–] HorrorReject@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

What if I'm a NPC with a shitty a.i. in this game we call life? Who's winning?

[–] Zenjuroo@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

lol what a sensationalist clickbait title. Microsoft and every FAANG company is investing in AI heavily for so many other use cases. Saying its for game dev is just a minor byproduct.

[–] jtechvfx@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Meanwhile, I am betting heavily on Sebulba. He’s always wins!

The amount of filler and garbage that AI is about to bring to gaming must make the Microsoft execs swell with excitement. Anime games are especially about to explode in saturation because of this but I expect Microsoft/EA/Ubisoft to take AI generated crap games to the stratosphere.

[–] FiTZnMiCK@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

1000x more paid cosmetics in Halo.

[–] SovietSpartan@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (3 children)

On one hand, AI for game dev can bring a lot of really cool things to the table if used correctly along with handmade content.

For example, fully voiced NPCs with much more reactive dialogue. Procedurally generated side quests with more unique stories. Much faster level generation and iteration, etc.

On the other hand though, AI so far has shown that it's more often than not been used maliciously or with the intention of fully replacing the human element for the sake of cheap products at the cost of quality. I won't really trust it all until I know people can use it in it's best way.

[–] Lt_Flak@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I know you said 'if used correctly', but I want to tack-onto your comment by reminding/informing scrollers that the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition used AI for the texture work.

You can go check out Youtube videos if you haven't seen it!

The automation of the industrial revolution destroyed the jobs of tailors, shoemakers, and other skilled craftsmen and artisans and replaced them with less skilled low wage factory workers.

The real tragedy though here is automation does not replace the soul that is put into handcrafted work. Before the industrial revolution, everywhere in the world people dressed dramatically differently. Regional clothing was replaced by cheap shirts made in a factory on a different side of the planet.

AI may not repeat history, but it may rhyme.

I know AI voices are controversial but man, imagine all the quests in WoW completely voiced

[–] Raptorheart@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

The Pokemon Company still won't pay to voice scripted sequence hell.

[–] SideWise7628@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I believe there is an addon doing just that

Atleast the voiced npc dialogue in the next Bethesda title will be campy for a reason

[–] Imsimon1236@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

honestly I'm still not convinced Starfield wasn't written by an AI

[–] NorysStorys@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (5 children)

Nah, not even AI could write something that bland

Want to work in game art industry but i think its kind of over :/

[–] WeAreVenumb@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

As much as people are freaking out about it, I think the arts are going to be safe from ai for quite some time yet. Ai for the foreseeable future can only remix existing art, but can't actually create anything new.

Honestly, I think the people handling graphics, sound, story and overall design aren't going to have to worry about their jobs anytime soon. The coders on the other hand might be in trouble.

[–] chris8535@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (1 children)

You vastly vastly vastly overestimate how many artists create unique work as a part of their job.

Half the reason companies in all industries are pushing AI adoption is to minimize their labor costs, which usually constitutes 25-30% of their operational expenses. Lower headcount means lower expenses, which means higher profits.

There will be companies that try to go all-AI, but with the current state of things their products probably won't be as good compared to a mixed workforce of humans+AI... but the long-term goal is to reduce headcount, and thus payrolls, to absolute minimums and let AI do the rest.

I feel there will always be a place for smaller games that were handcrafted with love. People love Baldur's Gate 3, because it's clear the people involved love their product.

It'll just become harder to find the gems between all the carbon copy puppy mill games that are either lazily produced to cash in, or don't dare take risks due to the budgets involved.

Could be useful for massive worlds like NMS with procedural planets. But for the most part please don't.

[–] Messyfingers@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Flight simulator 2024 is using AI to flesh out terrain features to give it a more handcrafted look without requiring it to actually be done across the globe. That's the kind of stuff that AI would definitely be great for. If it translates to better NPC AI as well that'd be incredible. There are lots of good uses here in both gameplay and development especially with labor and space saving challenges, hopefully they work on THOSE instead of replacing creative work.

Considering they own 49% of OpenAI, pretty sure they are investing heavily in AI for every part of Microsoft.

Surely AI will finally get Microsoft to not release broken and unfinished games

[–] HaikusfromBuddha@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (7 children)

I mean that’s kind of the point here right? Especially with their partnership with OpenAI.

Microsoft could provide GPTs that can be individual NPCs. That way any RPG say a Bethesda game never runs out of unique dialogue.

Back in the day you could type responses in RPG games but they would only work for specific responses. Now imagine you can type anything and always get a response based on the knowledge that NPC knows.

It’s prettty good tech and with a lot of their own studios being rpg heavy I can see them massively improve this space.

I recently started playing Pentiment. The game didn't have voice actors, but they added an option in the settings to have a narrator reading the written dialog.

It was really useful, but I couldn't stop thinking about how AI could make indie games a lot better.

[–] A_wild_fusa_appeared@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago (2 children)

The company believes that AI can be used to automate many tasks that are done by humans, like game development, testing, and localization. This could free up game developers to focus on more creative work

This honestly doesn’t sound too bad, sounds like it’ll be used for things like copilot in visual studio to help actual development. As long as AI stays out of creative processes and is used as a tool the same way spell check is in word it could be a net good thing.

Yes! I cannot wait for souless games filled with AI generated everything, instead of hand crafted from good artists.

These games will fit right in with all the well crafted, bugfree, quality titles that Microsoft has put out in the last five or so years. /s

[–] Banjoman64@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

AI represents new possibilities for what games can be.

Personally, I'm really excited for this news. Not for AI generated textures, dialogue, voices, etc. but more for the dynamic, procedural content it could produce (if it is actually used for that).

AI has the potential to make game worlds that are more reactive to the player than ever before. I'm not even referring to NPC dialogue either. I think a lot of people don't have a good understanding if the kinds of things AI can be used for beyond just generating text and images.

But yeah, if this is just an excuse to fire artists and replace their work with cheap generated content, that would be extremely sad.

[–] nzwan@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

I feel like they're gonna do the Microsoft thing where they fail miserably then leave as everyone else jumps onboard and succeed. On top of losing their creative workforce.

[–] prinnydewd6@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Oooooooof gaming is going to suck for the rest of time isn’t it…?

[–] FieryHammer@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Talking to an NPC

“Have you seen anyone around where the murder took place?”

“Sorry, but as an AI Language Model, topics such as murder to gruesome to discuss. Can I help you with anything else?

[–] marniconuke@alien.top 1 points 11 months ago

Noooo make your own games you lazy bastards, don't cry later something like "Just making great games' won't change Xbox console market share" after years of failing to make a single good game.

this is how we get more redfalls
