Diagnosed afib for me and currently going through treatment for it

[–] cheemio@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It helps me a ton with my cycling workouts. I get to see if a ride was difficult, easy or just average. Of course I can usually tell just by what my body is telling me, but sometimes it's nice to know when I have more to give, or when I need to slow down.

[–] EdwardMcFluff@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yes.

— I no longer have to look for my phone, I just ping it. It makes staying in the moment much more enjoyable and easier, because the mental strain of subconsciously remembering my phone and thinking about it is no longer there.

— I can control music from wherever without having to hold my phone. This means when I'm hosting music for the group and I'm out with friends (coupled with the first benefit), I literally have no idea where my phone is and I even forget I have a phone.
— If you do any kind of exercise, you will have to record yourself in some way to take it seriously. E.g. this much weight at this amount of reps at this day. The apple watch makes it easier to remember, easier to track your workouts, and easier to set goals that update automatically (you don't have to write down what day you exercised etc. the watch does it for you)

These are the main benefits for me and the highest reasons why I would always recommend an Apple Watch to improve someones life. Granted—IT'S NOT A NECESSITY, but damn is it useful to have.

I also got an apple watch so I never dive into the realm of luxury watches, so I'm gatekeeping myself from spending all that money

[–] szecheong@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I just got tired with all the dumb luxury mechanical watches that does nothing for me (aka Rolex). Sold all of them and tried apple watch. It is super lightweight and actually do something. It also makes me use less of my phone. Awesome watch. BTW I don't consider it as a luxury watch cause it really isn't that expensive in the watch world. Heck it's even cheaper than servicing a mechanical watch lol

It’s a notification device for me. I mainly just wear it to work where I need to respond to messages quickly and I might not feel my phone vibrate. Outside of work I don’t really wear it much. Maybe if I go on a run if I remember to wear it.

[–] TravelerMSY@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The fall sensor is a game changer if you’re on a ladder working by yourself.

[–] checker280@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The only “must have” app I have is not really Apple Watch specific, although it being attached to my body and not on my night stand is helpful - is SUGAR MATE.

It’s a CGM - continuous glucose monitor app that draws the data from your Dexcom and applies it to offer more insight than the Dexcom offers.

If the app senses your blood sugar dropping too low overnight, it will call you and wake you up. My watch will ring and vibrate until I can get up, do an actual blood test (measurements will vary by 15 minute increments and can be off by 10 or more points - so a blood test is more accurate).

It is also free. No subscriptions although I should send the developer money considering how often I use it. I can take photos and leave descriptions of meal, scan UPCs, it has a list of the more popular franchise meal options. I can record other medications. And it does a good substitution for A1C because it is recording all the data. You can also share data with loved ones and doctors.

Beyond that the walkie talkie feature that allows me to contact the wife anytime is fantastic. Her phone is on silent and she refuses to look at it when she’s not working.

It has created an exercise routine for me that I follow consistently. I ran 6 days a week.

[–] Binthair_Dunthat@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’m a runner, and I bought it for training and racing. Six 10ks, 12 half marathons, and six marathons later, I can say it really is great. And since I’m in my 60’s, fall detection and afib alerts are possibly lifesaving,

[–] untitled01@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

May not be 100% accurate (it can be a bit better if you update your body metrics regularly, but still not 100% accurate) but it helped me lose around 60 pounds.

Also, the fact that you can see notifications at a glance, made me pickup the phone less.

[–] Indianianite@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I was skeptical if I really needed one but now I can’t go without it.

For years I would get the occasional racing heart episodes while exercising but never could confirm whether it was in my head or if they were legitimate. I’ve now caught a few on my watch that are being used to help diagnose me with a form tachycardia. Going to the cardiologist this week to finally get answers.

Also, as a golfer, I’ve used SwingU as a range finder and to track my score. Such a sweet tool.

I also love using Siri to set timers while I grill.

These are just a few of so many great features that have improved my life immensely.

[–] moutonbleu@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Tracks my health and gamifies it. Great value for the past 5 years

[–] TooEdgyForHumans@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Cant do any workout without it. I mean i can and their data tracking might not be perfect, but it genuinely motivates me to keep pushing on. I also use it to instantly set various timers, alarms and reminders.

[–] ricecrisps94@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I think the watch has really motivated me to stay up on my fitness. It’s a great tool for me. I actually really love it

[–] jamu85@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I went from 100kg to 72 and have visible abs now. That’s because I close my rings everyday and track my workouts

[–] pinoy_grigio_@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

if you’re active and want to track it, it helps… besides that it is LITERALLY just a glorified watch

[–] undercoverballer@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My mom tripped and broke her hip last week and the watch said it detected a hard fall and called 911. I also put cellular on it and use it to keep track of her (lol) bc she’s older and super active and terrible at answering her phone. So when I worry, I can just check on her steps and location to see that she’s been out and about and doing okay!

[–] bahala_na-@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Currently a stay at home mom of a toddler. I kept losing my phone multiple times a day and this solved that. People were getting mad that I don’t respond and have been generally oblivious to my calls and texts, I was missing important things. I badly needed a watch for knowing what time it is at random moments. Voice commands to set timers has been so so convenient for everything. Cooking, laundry, 5min nap before I get to it and start something.

Finally, I also needed to reduce my phone screen time. The watch is very paired down in a great way.

[–] Tongresman2002@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I should have just bought the cheap Amazfit BIP again instead of my Apple Watch series 8.

[–] bigdogxxl@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Yup. It tracks my workouts, plays my podcasts, lets me set timers and silent alarms, and tells me the time.

[–] nolimit55@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Running with only an Apple Watch and AirPods is a game changer

I use it for faster and easier payment, hands free actions like opening my cars trunk or turning in its AC, viewing my next meeting location even having hands full, viewing tons of other simple info at a glance, etc

[–] Mephisto506@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

My watch alerted me to high heart rate while sleeping, which prompted me to get my sleep apnoea tested and diagnosed.

[–] LastOnBoard@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I just got ahead of getting sick because I saw my resting heart rate rising pretty sharply. Felt my lymph nodes swelling and my temperature was higher. I was able to get a few nights' solid sleep and now I'm feeling tons better

[–] slipperystar@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Its made me mire conscious of sleep and steps. Which is invaluable. Besides that it had a million other benefits.

[–] secretreddname@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I don’t use it for anything but a stop watch at the gym lol.

[–] Sillyrunner@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Incredibly useful. I’m on call at night so the ability for work to call me through watch vibrations and it not wake anyone else is amazing. It’s also great at the gym since I can track my lifting workouts without pulling my phone out all the time. I’ve also learned a lot about sleep. It amazing how alcohol before bed completely disrupts my sleep even if I don’t realize it. The data alone is eye opening.

[–] GR33N4L1F3@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Improved. It can tell me when I’ve fallen or fainted and I can look at the stats to see what my heart rate did if I get close to fainting too. It can also detect a car crash which I appreciate since I drive a lot.

[–] Egraypgh@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Who says that it can’t be both. Are there cheaper ways to do the things it does maybe but it does them all well enough and I would say with style. Mine was a gift for my wife. I’m still wearing the series 5 I wear mine every day I run a business and I have a family being able to spot my email, appointments and text on my wrist while carrying things and working all day for me is next level.

[–] kinglawro@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Hedonistic luxury

[–] OldSchoolPhotoshop@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

it definitely improved my wake up time

[–] Stjjames@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It’s an integral part of my fitness tracking/health/accountability!

[–] HDBagel@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

braided loop and sleep tracking helped me keep an eye out for my sleep schedule. I've been able to use sleep tracking data to adjust my daily routine and diet and I've been feeling better every day.

[–] jopi404@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It made me enjoy running at least a bit. With music

[–] Renkin42@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

Definitely nice for sleep and fitness tracking and seeing reminders without taking my phone out, but by far my number one use for it is Apple Pay. So convenient to just tap my wrist to the card reader. Makes way more sense to me than using my phone. At that point there’s not much difference in just pulling out my wallet.

[–] alecdvnpt@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

The Apple Watch lets me get notifications so I can leave my phone on silent without missing anything important. That’s literally the entire reason I have one. Aside from that, setting timers with Siri when I do laundry and looking at the time, I literally actively, I do nothing else with my AW.

Passively, it lets me unlock my phone and MacBook when I’m using them and that is awesome.

[–] kompergator@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

It serves as a small reminder to keep active and especially the sleep tracking functionality has improved my daily life - I pay way more attention to my sleep hygiene and I notice the general life improvement that comes from that.

[–] Mojofilter9@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I felt quite tired yesterday morning despite getting a good nights sleep, so I checked Athlytic and it gave me a very low recovery score and said that a few of my vitals were outside of their normal range. So I gave myself the day off, spent the day relaxing and went to bed early. I was definitely coming down with a cold or something by the way I was feeling mid afternoon. Feel fine today and my recovery score is medium. I can’t say for sure what would have happened without it, but I suspect I would currently be ill.

[–] alexinjo@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

For me, it was somewhat useless for the first year or so until I started going to the gym and began taking care of my health. Seeing progress, such as resting heart rate improvements, VO2Max increases and many other metrics has greatly motivated me to push myself and do more. Nowadays, I can’t imagine going outside without it (not that I ever have, but it wasn’t a priority).

[–] kkkccc1@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

So far just a luxury item for me. Bought it because I was depressed and felt like splurging on something as a distraction

[–] ZookeepergameOk2150@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I have come to the realisation after owning apple watch for a while that this question itself is wrong.

NO apple watch does not improve your life, YOU yourself improve your life. The watch is just a very good tool to help you on your journey to improve your life in a very efficient and easy manner.

If you buy the apple watch and still don’t complete yours rings, watch your water intake, fix your sleep schedule, don’t stand up and walk when the watch reminds you then its your fault not the watch’s.

[–] kameleongt@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

the first one I got helped me to keep on track with hitting goals and that got me down about 80lbs at peak. now i just keep upgrading for no reason minor updates.

[–] captaincoaster@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I’ve stopped wearing it. I tried. I think it’s kinda dumb.

[–] Less_Chipmunk_6173@alien.top 1 points 1 year ago

I love this watch, it tells you to log your feelings, to stand up, tells you good morning 😃 it’s a wonderful wrist companion!
