I keep mine in the spare tire. Also if he shares the AirTag with you (which you can now do in iOS 17) you won’t get that message. As for why it took so long is that it won’t always show that a tracker is with you, unless you go home (not 100% of the time, but that’s what happens to me). Also needs to be with you for ~15 minutes, then when it sees you’ve stopped and the tracker is still near, it knows to notify you (same reason why your apt neighbors AirPods won’t ping you, but your passengers AirPods would if you have a friend over).

Go to the car wash, they always find the AirTags.

Auto dealer here.

Beware. Your car may be targeted for theft. Take it to a dealer to have it searched or if you can a security specialist.

This is a very serious issue and I have seen it a lot. Park your car in your garage if you have one. If you haven’t gone home yet it’s a good idea not to take the car to your home until you do this.

This is a growing problem.

Do you drive a luxury vehicle or a Toyota?

I got this when i was in the plane from nyc to Chicago. Was annoying getting that popup from multiple peoples airtags.

My wife left her keys in my truck one day. I found out when I got to my destination 2 states away…

Check that gas cap

[–] nobeboleche@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

That happened to my girlfriend’s friend once. She noticed an air tag had been following her around all night and started to freak out. Turns out it was my buddy who had an air tag he hadn’t activated yet, we were all going to the same bars and then came back to my apartment. Later we noticed we all had the same notification that an air tag had been nearby.

Driving your dad’s car… have you asked your dad?

[–] Impossible-Fan-7244@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

As a truck driver I have found an air tag someone stuck to my trailer hoping they could track me to a spot I would stop overnight. I was hauling a ups trailer last year the first week of December when I got the notification. We picked it up outside Indianapolis and I found before I made it to Cleveland. Driving as teams so there was no stopping for a break so who ever placed it was out an air tag and probably got tired of following us. Ppl try shady shit with AirTags.

[–] GodOfWarGuy737@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

This happened to me last year too. Nothing came out of it though. You’ll probably be fine.

[–] Victore1976@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Well move around then…

[–] tribak@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

An AirTag of mine gets reported to my iPhone as found 🤔 that’s not normal, right?

[–] Howwhywhen_@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

This is so stupid it was obviously your dad’s, meanwhile the reddit warriors are coming up with all the crazy outlandish theories

[–] iZian@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Yeah ask your dad if he has a tag in the car and can share the tag with you and then it will show for you as the car and not alert you.

If he doesn’t then… you need to go around the car trying to connect to it unless it fell off the car already or they removed it already. I’m guessing outside the car if you had it locked. Under wheel arches and bumpers. Even if it doesn’t make a sound you should still be able to connect to it to locate it.

Update: mystery (somewhat) solved!

My 70+ year old dad put one in the car. I would have been less surprised if I was stalked rather than if he knew what an AirTag was. Apparently it was a gift to him. However, a few things still don't add up:

  1. I drove to Michigan a few days before with that car (alone) and never got a notification. I also drove around Michigan for a few days and never received that notification.
  2. The AirTag was not popping up on any bluetooth device tracker
  3. I appreciate the comments stating that the speaker is easily removable, however my dad is not savvy enough for that. I still don't understand why when I clicked "play sound" when in/around the car, nothing happened.

Thanks for all the help and concerns. Was getting a bit worried there!

Your dad is using an AirTag to keep tabs on his stash. Can’t have junior dipping into the honeypot.

[–] Crack_uv_N0on@alien.top 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

You received this notification because of an Air Tag nearby that you do not own. Apple started doing this after people were being stalked and cars were stolen using Air Tags. If you owned the Air Tag, you would not be receiving the notification. It has been planted on/in the car, an article of clothing, or something that has been travelling with you. A search is warranted.

Some cars are more desirable by theives becausethey are easy to successfully steal.

[–] peedypapers@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I just don’t understand how that feature is beneficial for a AirTag owner with a stolen item. So, if my car gets stolen, I don’t get a notification that it’s gone but if they have an iPhone (which they likely do), they’ll get notified they’re being tracked? This gives them time to deep search the vehicle and find the tag. I guess it really is important where you hide it…

Sheboygan, Joliet… GARY.

What is up the places names there?!

[–] UnconditionalDummy@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago (1 children)

That’s not even that crazy. A couple hours north and east and you can go to Hell.

[–] i-am-dan@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

That's amazing.

There's Dansville nearby there to, I like the sound of that!

[–] Thecardinal74@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

on the other side of that argument, please have someone check on your house, as there's a possibility someone put it by you to know how much time they have in your home before you get back

[–] missyou247@alien.top 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Wouldn't it be the opposite? Go home as fast as possible? Cause a burglar knows you're 200 miles from home right now.

[–] Burnerplumes@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I’d say it depends on whether you’re armed or not. I wouldn’t want to go home and run into a potentially armed burglar if I didn’t have the means to defend myself.

[–] itshukokay@alien.top 0 points 10 months ago (3 children)

All these comments saying one was placed on your car, definitely a possibility.

Here’s a question no one is asking though, were you driving with someone else? If your passenger had an AirTag in their purse or backpack, you would also be notified.

[–] Sylvurphlame@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

And occasionally AirPods with Find My integration will still occasionally false positive the owner or a travel companion

[–] xBaShBrOsx@alien.top 0 points 10 months ago (4 children)

This! We have one in our stroller for Disney and my friend got the notification while driving to Disney with us and was confused.

[–] Chet-Harper@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

I always get this notification when I walk my friend's dog because it has an airtag on its leash. This dog is absolutely obsessed with pigeons and has almost ripped the leash right out of my hands a couple times when we came across some unexpectedly. Pretty smart use of an airtag imo

[–] triplec787@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

Yep - my fiance had a panic attack because I accidentally left my airtag in my golf clubs and left them in the back of her car. She drove all over, was about 40 miles from home and it started alerting her lol whoops...

[–] joseph4th@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

My wife and her sister went to visit their brother in the hospital in a neighboring state. Halfway there they got an AirTag notice and freaked out.

Wife took my laptop bag that I had an AirTag in.

[–] Intrepid00@alien.top 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

My favorite story of this was someone said they had an AirTag planted on them at Disney. Turns out they grabbed the wrong stroller that had the same Disney sweater in it someone else bought because it was cold. Disney sells a lot of them on those days that are exactly the same lol.

[–] SeriesGlobal6409@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

The stroller would have to be the exact same too, not just the sweater.

[–] sjs48@alien.top 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It’s not supposed to give notifications if it’s nearby the owner. Like I have one in my wallet/car but it doesn’t notify people I’m with because I have my phone.

[–] tuc-eert@alien.top 1 points 10 months ago

It does happen sometimes though. I’ve had AirTag alerts randomly during trips where it belonged to someone else on the trip.
