You received this notification because of an Air Tag nearby that you do not own. Apple started doing this after people were being stalked and cars were stolen using Air Tags. If you owned the Air Tag, you would not be receiving the notification. It has been planted on/in the car, an article of clothing, or something that has been travelling with you. A search is warranted.
Some cars are more desirable by theives becausethey are easy to successfully steal.
I just don’t understand how that feature is beneficial for a AirTag owner with a stolen item. So, if my car gets stolen, I don’t get a notification that it’s gone but if they have an iPhone (which they likely do), they’ll get notified they’re being tracked? This gives them time to deep search the vehicle and find the tag. I guess it really is important where you hide it…
