I so wish that Apple and Google would clamp down on this kind of rampant data collection abuse. Users should be able to individually block any data collection point with it only breaking anything that fundamentally relies on it. And it should be done such that the app cannot tell that it's being blocked, so as to prevent stupid attempts to build everything to rely on data collection even if it doesn't make any sense.

Neither Apple nor Google will do so of course. Doesn't change that I wish that they would.

They're probably getting a cut of the revenue from this collection.

Is that even possible?? How can the app developer not know?

Let's take location for instance. Google can send to the app no data or the location. The app developers can tell if no data is sent back.

Google would have to develop, on its own against its own financial interests, a way to send random locations to the app. The app develop is going to easily see though that this data is not correct.

So even if Google decided to invest in this for the users, the app developers are still going to know

one can dream

Even if they did it sure wouldn't be for their apps. Purely by accident of course.

I'm still waiting for some Android Root/ROM dev to come up with an Xposed thing or whatever to just throw a "Lie" button on all the permission requests.

The “Sensitive Info” mention had me laughing. Like, they want everything that could be sensitive (health data, financial info, geolocation…) and yet they had to have a “Sensitive Info” category… :,)

is fb that toxic that it’s branded under instagram?

[–] moup@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Toxic and “lame” at this point. To millennials at least its what your aunt uses to post either “like this post or the puppy dies” or racist things.

Pretty sure its even worse with gen z.

[–] nergal@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I dunno if it's toxic or if the newer generations just don't care about it versus Instagram

We'll take one of everything you've got, thanks.

wish you could just get a little switch next to each of those and turn them all off if you don’t wanna share any info. that would be nice

[–] Jackolantern@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That’s the ideal but knowing zuck, not happening. Sadly.

Why/How is it an Instagram app and not a Meta app?

[–] igetzerobread@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

probably because instagram is still regarded better than meta even though its the same
