Social media was probably the best thing to ever happen for fascists. Because everyone's online and not out there actually doing something about it.

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 4 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

And right now we mostly have clowns (Zuck, Musk) at the helms of, let's call them what they are, megapropagandamachines. Imagine what equally evil but much smarter players could do.

Like, say, Putin? I honestly have to wonder how much the rise of fascism over the last couple decades owes to him.

[–] bloooooort@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 hours ago

I feel this

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 22 points 7 hours ago (2 children)

It's almost like we're watching a historical event where a large democratic nation is quickly turning into an oligarchal dictatorship. Almost like we're dealing with the consequences of anti intellectualism.

Also just because you don't live in America during all this doesn't mean your country is immune to right wing influence.

[–] Kyrgizion@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Dude, here in Europe half the nations are already beholden to some extreme right faction, and the other half are flirting with it.

Our situation is honestly just a hair better and could deteriorate very rapidly.

Like, for example, if Putin makes his move against the Baltics. If that happens we're equally megafucked.

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

It was oligarch for a while now.

[–] ThatWeirdGuy1001@lemmy.world 5 points 6 hours ago

I mean yeah but not to the point of openly ripping the govt apart.

[–] blasphemous@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

I'm on mobile, could someone make this a square comic so I can share it? I don't know how

[–] menas@lemmy.wtf 11 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

We shall stop being anxious, and start to be outraged. Organize, fight back, even at small scale

[–] dustyb0tt0mz@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

seriously. if your answer is to jump off a building, then fuck you. you were never an ally. you shirked your duty as a human and would have been a liability anyway. cowards are just as bad as the sociopaths they enable.

[–] Magnus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Sure...well the rest of the world is cheering you on. Go you guys.

[–] maxmalrichtig@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

The US is so intertwined with global politics and economy (e.g. financial markets, digital services, ...) that it's not just THEIR problem. If they drift further into fashism, oligarchy and right authoritarianism, sooner than later there will be a point where most of the world will be fucked in the short and possibly in the long term.

We need to fight this fight from our side as well, otherwise we all will go down. Our countries need to start pushing back against it and WE need to push our countries to do so. Write letters, go on protests, vote! Otherwise we might miss our window of opportunity to bring this spiral of destruction to a halt.

[–] Magnus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Of course it's not just their problem, I just find it a little weak sauce for American's to start motioning slowly towards a thoughts and prays approach.

They were told what they were going to get plain and simple, voted for it and now sit and watch as their own governmental system falls into decay. It isn't a question of the rest of the world in years to come but the reaction of a current petridish that could spill into other countries. I hope all the best to all who type on forums, write letters and make signs. Good luck but maybe the pens should be discarded.

[–] Mio@feddit.nu 2 points 6 hours ago

Why can't the president be boring? So he/she creates no big news. Trump just change his mind every day and lie...

[–] Shardikprime@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

The perma stun proceeds

[–] blady_blah@lemmy.world 22 points 12 hours ago

The funny thing is, I have Lemmy filtering out all posts with the word Trump in it, but it failed to get this one, the one complaining about too many people talking about Trump!

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 27 points 16 hours ago

I bet people said the same thing about Hitler both before and after he died. Awful people are typically quite often talked about.

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 38 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Trump is the best thing to ever happen to news networks. No more hard questions. No people planning positive rights legislation. Nothing but trump. The status quo is safe while he sucks all the air out of every public forum and media.

[–] Vincent@feddit.nl 7 points 13 hours ago

Trump is the best thing to ever happen to news networks

Or to single-letter social network sites.

[–] TheColonel@reddthat.com 40 points 22 hours ago (4 children)

Between November and now, I worked pretty diligently to create a wall around me to avoid these topics. Unfollowing, blocking, filtering.

Once the inauguration happened, I discovered that the concrete I used was faulty and full of holes. The black, fetid water of these lunatics seeped in from all directions.

Tech news, cultural news, arts, all possible other topics that I thought were safe within the walls I built are now covered with sludge.

I so tired of this shit. How did we let this happen?

[–] sh__@lemmy.world 7 points 12 hours ago

Probably because the impact is bigger now and affecting a lot of the things you mentioned. That's what happens when they get power I guess rather than just talk. I've been doing my best to avoid it as well though, it also makes me feel so negative. Good luck to you in this crazy world.

[–] LinuxEnjoyer@lemmy.world 7 points 12 hours ago

I'm in the same spot. Even made a Lemmy account just so I can block communities. Then I go to technology/linux/memes communities and guess what? It's american politics all over. And don't even get me started on Reddit, at that point subreddits don't even matter anymore. Even on the subreddit related to my own country in eastern Europe, every day I see a ton of pointless "Trump news". And mods justification is always "it's TOTALLY related to our country because US politics impacts the entire world". Like, what's the point anymore? We might as well talk about Trump and Musk in the plants or lego community.

[–] DrDeadCrash@programming.dev 19 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

[Describes working very hard to ignore problem]

How did it happen?

It can't be ignored forever.

[–] TheColonel@reddthat.com 12 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Dude, I was up on the news and very diligent in many things.

You don’t know where I live, you don’t know what I’ve done up to November, nor where I’ve worked.

I spent literally the last few months of my entire fucking life trying to shut out this shit so it doesn’t tank my mental health to a degree that would likely kill me.

So please, spare me your fucking judgment.

I've been having this problem since 2016.

No matter how many filters you throw at it, there's always images, videos, and people self-censoring to get around them.

It's infected everyone and everything, like a virus.

Searching for a way out. I'm sure there's somewhere safe out there...

[–] HawlSera@lemm.ee 5 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

Honestly I'm surprised that "You won't have to hear about Trump again" wasn't motivation enough for people to get to the polls

[–] TheColonel@reddthat.com 2 points 2 hours ago

This was 100% one of the most shocking things about all of this.

This

Of all the shit that comes with trump, this is the worst thing. For the next 4 years I cannot have a single fucking day without trump. It's going to be trump left, trump right, trump before, trump after, there is no escaping it. 4 years of 90% of the news being trump bullshit. kill me now.

[–] Rusty@lemmy.ca 1 points 6 hours ago

Even in Canada 50% of news is about Trump

[–] LunarLoony@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 9 hours ago

And the other 10% is Elon

[–] mnemonicmonkeys@sh.itjust.works 50 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Honestly, I think that's the top reason he went into politics. Narcissists need everyone to pay attention to them

Unfortunately, no matter how the rest of the next four years go, I fear we'll be hearing "Trump-era" for the rest of our lives.

[–] ech@lemm.ee 24 points 1 day ago (16 children)

If that's the worst thing, then you are very privileged.

Dude don't waste your death on a splat, buy a sniper rifle and at least try an assassination attempt. You can always have a live grenade or side arm if you screw up and have to off yourself.... But I mean, at least take some pot shots at him or a crony before you leave.

Everyone's talking and nobody's doing anything.

[–] niktemadur@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Everything... EVERYTHING... related to the orange parasite or any of its' bootlicking minions, I downvote without looking and move on.

[–] Ghosthacked@lemm.ee -1 points 9 hours ago

I bet if Trump could take over earth by imprinting himself over people like Agent Smith, he would.

[–] samus12345@lemm.ee 18 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

The day he no longer exists will be a joyous day indeed.
