the amount of hate crimes we see in the US will drastically rise, especially among people who don’t “look” or “sound” American, especially indigenous people. ignorance is now intelligence.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 15 points 7 hours ago

Not a bug, but a feature of the Republiqon agenda.

[–] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

Time to learn Spanish.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 10 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Thats some bullshit. We should all start speaking spanish then.

[–] Jumpingspiderman@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago

I'm looking into convo Spanish at the local C. C.

[–] Dragomus@lemmy.world 6 points 8 hours ago (4 children)

Hmm not to discredit this, but how does that work, being detained and having to produce a birth certificate ... does one normally daily carry a birth certificate next to ones ID?

And if you're detained without a a birth certificate while on vacation across the country?

Only ID on you? Go to prison?

No ID nor birth certificate and you'll either get shot or deported?

What if you speak something else than Spanish or English amongst yourselves?

How long 'till the Trump administration mandates a form of ID on ones hand, arm, or forehead?

[–] PersnickityPenguin@lemm.ee 1 points 19 minutes ago

If you don't carry your federal ID with you at all times, there is no way to determine your US citizenship. Also, there is no federal ID. And many states issue drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants to avoid issues with unlicensed and uninsured motorists.

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works -1 points 45 minutes ago* (last edited 44 minutes ago) (1 children)

immigrants are meant to carry their green card on them at all times. i keep mine with my driving license.

i also keep an album of photographs of my ID on my phone

[–] teawrecks@lemmy.world 2 points 35 minutes ago (1 children)

sure but these were us citizens. i am a citizen. i woild never carry my birth certificate around. what if i lose my wallet? identity theft??

[–] funkless_eck@sh.itjust.works 2 points 33 minutes ago

I understand, I was saying that's why they were asked for papers, suspected of being illegal immigrants, not saying they should've had to follow this bullshit

[–] Marleyinoc@lemmy.world 3 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

Lol. The religious nutjobs will really love it when he gives us a choice of the taking the mark (of the beast) or face deportation.

[–] Jumpingspiderman@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

It would be awesome though if we were able to deport all the religious nut jobs. Though not for the places these crazies would be deported to.

[–] dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works 2 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

Someone can bring it, fax it, send a picture, carry a picture? Carrying it seems like a huge risk of accidental loss.

[–] PersnickityPenguin@lemm.ee 1 points 18 minutes ago

Do you think every US born citizen is going to suddenly carry around a photocopy of their birth certificate everytime they leave their house?

If you're an American citizen in a red state, that looks visibly Mexican/South American and speaks fluent Spanish, you should lean into this! Go put on a serape, a sombrero, some chanclas and sell tamales or tortillas in front of the local mall right now while singing "Feliz navidad" - just be the full, lead-huffing boomer racist fantasy caricature. Get arrested and then get yourself a FAT settlement for civil rights violations... while we still have courts and judges who don't have spray tan stains on their white collared robes.

[–] Duamerthrax@lemmy.world 6 points 7 hours ago

while we still have courts and judges who don’t have spray tan stains on their white collared robes.

About that. They're expanding Gitmo.

[–] JDPoZ@lemmy.world 9 points 10 hours ago

I’m sorry but this has some “what are you going to do? 🔪 me?!” energy…

Some folks had better start figuring out that “ridicule” and “bureaucracy” will not phase jack-👢 rounding people up… or we are all in deeper 💩 than you can imagine.

The more useful response is the one the Black Panthers did via 💪’d patrols.

30 folks capable of physically intimidating those who would snatch families to put in Gitmo standing in the way and saying “make us” is the only thing that will keep 🚫-Cs from taking people.

The question is - will they call a bluff or back down?

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 18 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

You think everyone being deported is gonna get due process?

[–] Snapz@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago

I don't actually. Read the last sentence. Try to start from a place of unity instead of division in your replies, friend.

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 31 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

This is a terrible idea.

Cops are completely immune and there is little to no chance the courts would uphold any civil rights violations under Dictator Trump

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 10 points 13 hours ago

Criminally they're shielded by qualified immunity for a lot of things, civilly there's more leeway there and taxpayers to be fleeced.

[–] seejur@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Sure, the cop is shielded, and will not pay a penny. The taxpayers on the other hand....

[–] CurlyWurlies4All@slrpnk.net 28 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (2 children)

"Fat settlement" is spelled a little differently in reality:

Mark Lyttle, an American citizen with mental disabilities who was wrongfully detained and deported to Mexico and forced to live on the streets and in prisons for months, settled his case for $175,000 against the federal government.

https://www.aclu.org/news/immigrants-rights/us-citizen-wrongfully-deported-mexico-settles-his-case-against-federal-government

[–] meliaesc@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

That's more than my yearly salary though so... 🤷🏽‍♀️ No, but that's absolutely horrendous what he went through.

[–] inclementimmigrant@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

I mean cops being defunded by thousands of US citizens wrongfully detained and deported doesn't sound so bad

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 4 points 14 hours ago

just be the full, lead-huffing boomer racist fantasy caricature.

They love their racist caricatures though. You know: to point to and reinforce prejudices. Hell, that strategy is more likely to land a position with the GOP than detained.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

Omg, please make this a thing.

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 63 points 1 day ago (2 children)

We've been getting news reports like this and ones about Native Americans, and they are egregious, but it's worth noting we're not getting enough stories about the undocumented people and how badly they're being treated. They're people too. What's being done to them is legal under this administration, but it's evil.

Fuck maga and the racist bigots dominating American policy.
Thank you American voters.

[–] kreskin@lemmy.world 1 points 8 hours ago* (last edited 8 hours ago) (1 children)

Dont forget to also thank the DNC for their electoral strategerie. Turns out campaigning to a left leaning voter base by going hard right with Liz cheney onstage and Harris talking lovingly about her Glock wouldnt win it for the dems?

No one could have forseen such a thing not working on the 20th time its been tried. The only way to be sure is to try it a few more times. Lets get on it people --who knows some republicans that the dems can campaign with twice as hard in 2028? Are the AIPAC donations still flowing? How can we get even larger corporate sponsors? Can we get Harris some ammo bandoleers and a .50 cal for next time? The glock didnt work.

Who is even in charge these days at the DNC?!?

[–] Jumpingspiderman@lemmy.world 1 points 5 hours ago

Don't forget the insane "Genocide Joe" crowd actively campaigning against Harris because Biden and Trump "were the same".

Guilty until proven innocent, unfortunately.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 62 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Literally. Having to show your fucking birth certificate to prove you are a citizen?

I suppose next they will demand the "long form" birth certificate like they did with Obama. And then they will show it and it won't matter anyway.

[–] Jumpingspiderman@lemmy.world 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I'm getting a passport card ASAP. I don't look Mexican or south American, but I have a Latin surname- And on more than one occasion Latinos have referred to me and to my wife (who also has a Latin surname) as "one of us"- which frankly pleased me. So I'm not taking any chances of some ICE pig deciding to make his quota at our expense.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 54 minutes ago

I wouldn't say don't do it, because you never know, but all it takes is for an asshole cop to "lose" your ID and you're still fucked. That is one of my big worries and how I think a lot of citizens will end up "detained," if not just deported.

As of 2023, there were over 42 million Spanish speakers in America.

I used to live in South Gate, a neighborhood in L.A. We were the only family in the neighborhood that didn't speak Spanish. Even the local pizza places didn't understand us well enough to order from. We didn't complain, we were the white people who chose to move there and we were fine with it. But we're talking about a neighborhood full of homeowners, not undocumented immigrants. Some of them were in the U.S. for generations.

And then there's Florida:

First settled by the Spanish in the 16th century, 19% of Floridians now speak Spanish, which is the most widely taught second language. In Miami, 67% of residents spoke Spanish as their first language in 2000.

In addition, there are several other major cities in Florida with a sizable percentage of the population able to speak Spanish, most notably Tampa (18%) and Orlando (16.6%).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_language_in_the_United_States#Florida

The U.S. has no official language. Spanish is one of many spoken in the U.S. A large proportion of the U.S. used to be Mexico. Of course we have a ton of people here who speak Spanish.

But, you know, "they all look and sound alike."

[–] Vinstaal0@lemmy.world 2 points 20 hours ago

And even if they have an official language what then?

Nothing really changes
