General community for news/discussion in the UK.

Less serious posts should go in !casualuk@feddit.uk or !andfinally@feddit.uk
More serious politics should go in !uk_politics@feddit.uk.

Try not to spam the same link to multiple feddit.uk communities.
Pick the most appropriate, and put it there.

Posts should be related to UK-centric news, and should be either a link to a reputable source, or a text post on this community.

Opinion pieces are also allowed, provided they are not misleading/misrepresented/drivel, and have proper sources.

If you think "reputable news source" needs some definition, by all means start a meta thread.

Posts should be manually submitted, not by bot. Link titles should not be editorialised.

Disappointing comments will generally be left to fester in ratio, outright horrible comments will be removed.
Message the mods if you feel something really should be removed, or if a user seems to have a pattern of awful comments.

"gulf of america" just sounds like "bank of america", it's not a place name it's a fucking business, plus it's awkward to say; it ends up more like "gulf off america", while "gulf of mexico" can be comfortably spat out like gulf-o'mexico

The Mexican president 🤣.

“For us, it is still the Gulf of Mexico, and for the entire world it is still the Gulf of Mexico,” said Claudia Sheinbaum, the Mexican president, on Tuesday. She previously joked that Mexico should refer to the US as “Mexican America”.

Yes!

At least the parts that used to be Mexican Territory, if nothing else.

Or all of it I'm good with that too

Although the fact that Mexico's official name is "Estados Unidos Mexicanos"/"Mexican United States" does muddy things a bit.

Can we go further and refuse to recognise their new president?

We could call it the Gulf of Cuba to troll the Republicans

What sort of person makes almost his first task something so petty? And in front of a crowd of ~~supporters~~ cultists. I notice he signs with a big sharpie instead of a pen like a normal president. That'll be so it's bigger than other signatures and everyone can see it.

the name will not change on official maps in Britain unless “Gulf of America” becomes the most commonly used name for it by English speakers. Officials believe that is not likely for some time, if at all.

I wonder what the higher bar is? This or if the UN (or another international body) recognises the name?

I'm sure Trump could whisper into Sundar Pichai's ear and get him to update it on Google maps.

I think they will for a little while, then forget and slip up a few times while "correcting" themselves before ultimately giving up and returning to GoM.

Its not really news unless its about a country who is not the US actually recognizing. Of course everyone knows that the straights of gibraltar is now called the straights of frakenreagan.

It's not a very good article, is it? Hardly surprising, given the newspaper in question. But just repeating "the telegraph understands" without ever attributing it to any source…not even "government insiders speaking on condition on anonymity" or something like that.

The Torygraph never did pretend to be egalitarian.

[–] blackn1ght 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ah I could read it fine - I'll update with an archive link in a sec

[–] Emperor 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Thanks for that but, as we are a link aggregator and everything revolves around the link, it is better to have the main URL as the original article and add the archive to the body of the text. That way, if others post the same link, Lemmy detects it and provides a link over to the other community (which also helps us spot when the same link is posted twice to the same community).

[–] blackn1ght 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ah 😂 I'll switch it around again. Starting to feel a bit like the hokey cokey...

[–] Emperor 10 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And while you are at it... put your left leg in.

Use reader mode and side step it

[–] TimewornTraveler@lemm.ee 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

tbh I really don't care about this one, since America just refers to the whole super continent. Just start calling ppl USians

[–] DakRalter@thelemmy.club 1 points 4 days ago

After the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, there was a minor trend to call them USers.
