This might not be up your alley, but I really like yt-dlp to save content.

(Windows instructions since I haven't fully transitioned yet, but if you have, you can figure this out no problem via the yt-dlp github page.) Open cmd to the yt-dlp directory (go to the folder where you see the exe in file explorer and type cmd into the address window so that you don't have to fuss with cd commands,) type whatever you have the yt-dlp exe renamed to without the extension (I just renamed it to yt since I rarely have a queue, and I'm lazy AF,) and then start pasting links. Add a space between every link obviously - but you can queue up whatever you want to watch the next day and download the queue while you sleep. Place the yt-dlp exe on a usb-c thumb drive and you can transfer the media files to your phone for listening to at work mid-transit if you need to keep your phone in your pocket.

ezpz, and an example of two videos in queue:

I may pay for premium, but I still hella support data archival.

Ive tried a few choices out and this is the way. Has its issues from time to time but they always get fixed quickly. Overall very solid

[–] Nanowith@lemmy.world 8 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

The main problem with new YouTube alternatives is that creators rely on Google for income, switching to a new platform means becoming destitute. No premium content means no big audience means new platforms fail. It's the one social media I really don't see having its monopoly broken.

Most yt content creators get little to nothing from ads. They use yt only for marketing and provide additional services like newsletters and receive donations / fees via liberapay

I like PipePipe. You can log in with a YouTube account (which fixes a lot of the YouTube blocking for me) and it's a fork of NewPipe too (just like Tubular but it regularly receives updates).

Revanced hasn't let me down. Sometimes Google will update something and cause a minor issue like loading shorts upon opening the app, or (in a previous version) not properly load comments.

Whatever version of Revanced i have currently is flawless, and has adblock+sponsor block built in.

I use NewPipe when I'm on mobile, assuming that you're talking about YouTube client software.

Is it working normally for you? Today the videos just stopped loading properly for me and now it just shows an error no matter how many times I retry to play a video.

Edit: Downloaded the new version on their website and now it works 👍

[–] tal@lemmy.today 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Yeah, YouTube broke something. They just updated it to fix it.

They have their own F-Droid repo that I think gets pushed to faster than the main F-Droid one, so if you're willing to use it, that's working now.

https://newpipe.net/FAQ/tutorials/install-add-fdroid-repo/

If the updated version isn't in the main F-Droid repo as well, I assume that it will be before too long.

Got updated about 12 hours ago. I was watching shit last night then it broke when I woke up I had the update. Those people are machines.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I've used a few different Android apps and I always end up going back to NewPipe.

[–] KingJalopy@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Newpipe "just works" I love it.

When it works at least.

[–] GlassHalfHopeful@lemmy.ca 1 points 14 hours ago

I've found that when google breaks it, the app is only non-functional for a very short time compared to others. I love this app so much.

[–] penquin@lemm.ee 2 points 1 day ago

I use tubular, a fork of newpipe with sponsorblock

[–] N00b22@lemmy.ml 1 points 22 hours ago

I use PipePipe instead, you can sign in with your account so you don't get the sign in error

[–] scottmeme@sh.itjust.works 2 points 21 hours ago

Grayjay is great and had plugins for different sources.

Apps for Android, Windows, Linux and MacOS

[–] SeekPie@lemm.ee 1 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

I've been happy with Grayjay, though (IIRC) it's not fully open source. It supports YouTube and Odysee and they're developing a desktop client as well (its in beta rn).

[–] muntedcrocodile@lemm.ee 2 points 23 hours ago

I'm on PipePipe. The latest fdroid release is bugged but the latest via obtainium is working perfectly. Also Great cos u can export and import ur tubular database.

[–] JackGreenEarth@lemm.ee 1 points 20 hours ago

LibreTube still works for me with the 'disable Piped proxy' option enabled

[–] recursive_recursion@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Besides the Newpipe mention by @tal@lemmy.today

You also have the option of Freetube which works like Tubular, the only downside is that there's no mobile app but it's available on Windows, Mac, and Linux via Flatpak/Flathub and distro repositories like the AUR or Nix Packages.

FYI: Fennec (aka: the Fdroid version of Firefox without the google play shenannigans) + uBlock Origin works flawlessly. I also use ProtonVPN with Secure Core to a North America Server via Switzerland, and most of the time, Youtube doesn't block me, and if it does, I just disconnect and reconnect to get a different server.

I know this isn't an "app" you hoped for, but it's how I've been watching youtube for the past few years.

(Yes, I'm aware of the Andy Yen twitter controversy, I'm keeping an eye on the situation)

[–] rosahaj@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

Andy Yen controversy? May I ask?

[–] IDKWhatUsernametoPutHereLolol@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 hours ago (1 children)

https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/35621574

Andy Yen a board member of the Proton Foundation, the non-profit that owns a majority of Proton AG.

Andy Yen is also simultaneously the CEO of Proton AG. Proton AG owns all Proton services, including Protonmail, ProtonVPN, etc...

Andy Yen, via twitter, praised one of trump's cabinet picks. Which is a very strange thing to say considering what republicans have been doing.

But then he continued and said "republicans stand up for the 'little guy'"

So yea... very bizzare statements

So because of this, many are saying he's pro-trump.

But honestly I think he's just a right-wing Libertarian dumbass that has no clue what he's talking about.

I'm not gonna rush and move yet, but just keeping an eye on it and thinking about alternatives and preparing... just in case.

[–] rosahaj@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 hours ago

oh yeah, i had heard of that, i just didn't recognize the name. honestly it's made me consider offboarding from protonmail (only on the free version) since i have aliases on my own domain anyway
