I remember a post on Reddit about someone putting an ad brake in the middle of a "white noise for sleeping" video.

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago

Was it that one that woke up a very confused baby?

Didn't YouTube start putting ads even on non-monetised videos like, a year or so ago? It's possibly not the uploader's fault

[–] dukatos@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It is the same thing, if you think about it.

[–] maccentric@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 week ago

I see how it could be used that way, yes

[–] Pickle_Jr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

One one hand that's annoying and would suck if you're a light sleeper.

On the other hand I feel like some (most?) people would sleep right through that. In which chase the ad would give money to the uploader dispute the audience literally being asleep. That's cool because fuck ads lol

[–] june@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Keep in mind people tend to turn white noise up pretty loud, so the ad was probably booming

[–] Pickle_Jr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 week ago

Ah that's a fair point. ADs that are 20x louder than the video is a sure fire way to get me to close a page.

Why don't we just use one of the FOSS white noise applications, which also have options for brown, pink and other colourful noises?
Or why don't we just download an mp3 from soundcloud and use that? It's not like YouTube is giving 1000Kb/s HD audio.

Oh right, YouTube is right there.

SmartTube has SponsorBlock baked in

You know this one's old because he didn't have to sit through multiple 50 second ads.

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

What are you talking about? There are fewer ads for this long video. It's for your benefit. Obviously.

edit: and we're adding randomly timed "skip" buttons at various points in the ads to make sure that you can skip when you want! Not to make sure your eyes are on screen at all times.

At first we thought internet will be a basically free and easily accessible knowledge base of all the things.

But then extreme monetisation & financial interests were like 'abso-fucking-lutely not' & proceeded to monopolise and segregate the inter of our nets.

Long live Wiki and all fossy things!

Dammit, I came up with a Halloween costume too late. The plan would've been to dress up as a 'like' button, and get drunk.

[–] atocci@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Why is the third panel's settings icon a spider or a bug of some sort?

[–] i_am_not_a_robot 22 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Because spider.

(The artist hides a spider in their comic)

[–] atocci@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago

I must now go through every past comic on a search for more

[–] Stalinwolf@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

I have come across a few children's illustrators who do this with spiders too, but sometimes on every page.

[–] weirdboy@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I hate to break it to you, but spiders have eight legs.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago

That spider is hidden somewhere in each of their comics.

watching latest Adam Conover video

Adam: "We're about to be repeatedly punched in the throat by capitalism. Which brings me to today's sponsor..."

Later in the video

Adam: "Which reminds me that today's video is also sponsored by..."

Me: "Well fuck... I wasn't expecting YOU to punch me in the throat repeatedly with capitalism..."

[–] Aeri@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

get sponsorblock look at video over half the runtime is automatically skipped for being non-video garbage

[–] EF5C_EF5C@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No mention of the Wadsworth Constant? Have we forgotten it so soon?

[–] P4ulin_Kbana@lemmy.eco.br 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] PM_Your_Nudes_Please@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It’s an old meme that states the first 30% of every YouTube video is useless and can be skipped without consequence. It’s a constant because it doesn’t matter if the video is 3 or 300 seconds long; The first 30% can always be skipped without missing anything important.

IIRC, it started on Reddit when a user named Wadsworth wrote about it in one of the AskReddit threads about life hacks.

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Correct. And for a while yt had an Easter egg where you could add wadsworth=1 to a url and it would skip to 30% of the video

[–] P4ulin_Kbana@lemmy.eco.br 1 points 6 days ago

If you are using a keyboard you can press 3 and that will probably do it.
