Hey, lots of Political Topics coming up that's just turning into blame games, anger and bad vibes. I'm enacting a temporary rule: no new politic topics for one week as of now.

I recognize that there is a lot of anger around the election and it's legitimate to feel that way. But I'm willing to bet that none of the political talk in the next week constitutes a 'Best Of' post anyway.

That being said: feel free to use this topic (!!!!) as political talking points. I'm serious. People deserve to discuss their opinions and I don't want to hamper them too much.

If you have political stuff to say, say it in here. I'll promise to lightly moderate this topic, which means this topic will naturally lead to bad vibes and poor arguments.

But we need a place to discuss and vent.

I'll start, with an opinion that's definitely uncontroversial /s

Identity politics is dead. People are ready for real change, not corporatism in a leftist skinsuit. It would be so easy to draw people back. Stop talking shit about cishet white men or whatever, talk about how you're going to help the working class, and then do that.

Stop doing dumb token shit like forcing the master -> main github renaming. The only thing that accomplished was white libs patting themselves on the back while doing jack shit to accomplish real change.

If you don't like that and think the DNC just lost because of racism/sexism/whatever, that's fine. Prepare yourself for more fascism as a result of that attitude, though.

While identity politics are important, I have always believed that their explosion into mainstream after Occupy Wall Street died was part of an intentional plan of the powers that be to kill the momentum of the potential class war.

That, along with some of the stories coming out of the camps as things crumbled, match up pretty directly with stuff out of leaked and un-classified three letter agency guides on disrupting grass roots movements.

Hard to have any kind of momentum against the 1% when you're busy arguing about microagressions along identity lines. Or ignoring the point of intersectionality entirely to lump poverty level trailerpark white males in with old money white male ceos.

Wealth is a far more influential force on life outcomes than any identity aspects. Identity more heavily impacts the 99%, so focusing on it takes eyes off the tippy top elite.

Just like all the recent focus on landlords including hate for small local people renting out one family property rather than focusing on the fucking investment companies buying up entire towns worth of housing.

Keep your eyes on the fucking prize folks, instead of squabbling over the tablescraps.

Yeah, definitely. I don't have any proof, but very much believe that Occupy Wall Street was viewed as an actual threat and identity politics was weaponized against it, as you say.

To be clear, I don't mean "identity politics is dead" as in "racism is over" or anything like that. I mean it more in the sense of "Stop letting those in power divide us" and "there is no war but class war".

Keep your eyes on the prize, indeed.

Drag thinks identity politics are still alive. "Trans people shouldn't be put in concentration camps" is gonna be a controversial statement in 4 years.

I'm simply annoyed that all the news stories post-election have only slightly changed. We went from 'here's all the awful things Trump will do if he gets re-elected' to 'here's all the awful things Trump is planning to do now that he's re-elected'. It's not really new content, just the same stories over again.

There wasn't even a week off from it, the man and his coverage is an assault on all the senses and it's just never ending.

Probably because he is awful, but I understand the frustration.

My dog took a shit on the rug last night and I stood in it this morning with bare feet and it was still more interesting than US politics

Lol. Nice. I bet it felt better, too.

But we need a place to discuss and vent.

It's nice that you are trying to do the right thing, but you guys really got that Reddit vibe here, where moderators "allow" things instead of "serving" the communities.

But maybe others will like this post more. I like the initiative and trying to talk to users in a mature way.

The only power a moderator has in Lemmy (or Reddit for that matter) is the removal of posts and/or comments. Or more drastic removal (or: banning of users).

It is the only power we have.

If you don't like discussing politics, you may be suffering from Allism Spectrum Disorder.

Allism, also known as Allism Spectrum Disorder, is a pervasive developmental disorder which impairs a persons social, communicative, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral function. The symptoms of allism range from moderate to severe and are lifelong; however, with intensive treatment and early interventions, the presentation of symptoms can be less severe. Currently, there is no cure for allism; however, therapeutic and dietary interventions in the research stage of development are showing promise.

Pervasive difficulty with discussing topics of substance; often reduces conversations to superficial, trivial details (e.g. deflects discussions of meteorological patterns or climate change to the current, observable state of the weather)

(Yes, this is a joke. A true one, though)
