Gaming attained perfection in 1998.

[–] ChaosMaterialist@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago

That era was a sweet spot because developers had enough power for complex games and decent graphics, but limited enough that they couldn't drown their art department in graphics fidelity.

Common misconception—Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Games released in 2004

I think most people would argue that at least when it comes to console games, the peak was attained a little later, in the PS2 era

I got myself a cheap emulation handheld and haven't booted up my PC since July. If it doesn't fall apart, it would take me years to finish what I have stored on it.

I had a period of like 2 years where I mostly played GBA, SNES, and PSX games on one - super fun. A slightly bigger one with more ergonomic controls and maybe PS2 and NGC support would be perfect

I really appreciate the steam deck for that

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 3 points 6 days ago

I want one, but I'd use it in the same room as my desktop PC like 90% of the time, so it's hard to justify the cost. They also seem so large for some reason

Do you not need to do like... productivity stuff?

[–] gramxi@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't have a computer toucher job emilie-shrug

Neither do I, I just need to use my PC every day for my own projects. Even if not for those I need the use of a physical keyboard, just a much nicer digital experience than typing things on a phone.

My Lenin-given PC specs are there for math. And 3D modelling.

I completed a build a couple of months ago:

  • ASRock X670E Steel Legend
  • Ryzen 7 7800X3D
  • 128 GB of G.Skill Trident Z5 Neo
  • Nvidia RTX 4090 Founders Edition
  • Bunch of NVMe storage
  • Fractal Design Meshify 2

I mostly emulate stuff or play 2D games, otherwise I’m working through my boomer shooter backlog.

I've been playing LeafGreen on my PSP, almost ready to take on the elite four.

[–] Tom742@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

Something about GBA on a PSP just feels right. That was my first emulation handheld, recently found a nice condition original thicc model and jail breaking that thing has been so simplified. I remember needing a paperclip last time I did that

[–] butter@midwest.social 7 points 1 week ago

Just emulate from your phone. It's super easy.
