On this day in 1898, the Battle of Virden began when armed members of the United Mine Workers of America (UMW) surrounded a train full of strikebreakers and exchanged fire with company guards. 13 people were killed, dozens more wounded.

After a local chapter of the UMW began striking at a mine in Virden, Illinois, the Chicago-Virden Coal Company hired black strikebreakers from Birmingham, Alabama and shipped them to Virden by train.

The company hired armed detectives or security guards to accompany the strikebreakers, and an armed conflict broke out when armed miners surrounded the train as it arrived in town. A total of four detectives and seven striking mine workers were killed, with five guards, thirty miners, and an unrecorded number of strikebreakers wounded.

After this incident, Illinois Governor John Tanner ordered the National Guard to prevent any more strikebreakers from coming into the state by force. The next month, the Chicago-Virden Coal Company relented and allowed the unionization of its workers.

"When the last call comes for me to take my final rest, will the miners see that I get a resting place in the same clay that shelters the miners who gave up their lives on the hills of Virden, Illinois...They are responsible for Illinois being the best organized labor state in America."

Not sure I've ever been more wired and tired yet also rly calm

I feel like my executive functioning wolf pointing out all the stuff I need to do more than usual today but ehhh maybe tomorrow niko-yawn

It's weird, all the usual racing thoughts are gone, even my tinnitus is quieter, it's nice

[–] PaX@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's such a cliche but...... is this what normals feel like??

Maybe I'm just high

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago (5 children)

I've been in a further version of this and well, you're sleep deprived but on speed. This can be a beautiful mind space. Day 2 of a speed bender is absolutely amazing. Then you hit diminishing returns.

I don’t know if it’s intended, but the name β€œxitter” would be pronounced β€œshitter” in Portuguese. That’s funny I think.

Banning πŸ”» as a symbol is Nazi-coded. Just like the downward-pointing pink triangle, it is people inverting the image of being a political prisoner.

Even when I was in my edgy atheist phase and Bill Maher got on the bandwagon, and he was still more lib-coded, I hated that smug prick. Just absolutely the most grating human being alive. Idk how he has an audience, there should be more people who want to hunt him for game than people who want to watch his show.

Would this be a good time to tell you all that this hexbear account is the real successor of ZA/UM and all my posts are spiritual successors to Disco Elysium?

At my family’s, they’re all reactionary and it’s funny hearing them talk about how much hotter shit is these days than when they were young but also that climate change is fake

Voting for Kamala when the Dems are actively perpetrating a genocide because β€œTrump would be worse” is voting for Adolf Hitler because Joseph Goebbels would be worse

[–] Blockocheese@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Libs don't know history and definitely don't know who Goebbels is

Looking into tech security shit (as an idiot who does not know numbers) is unironically like staring into a yawning void that stares back, and the void says shit like "proprietary firmware blobs" and "feds run the exit nodes". It's nice to get a little perspective on how bad it really is that way.

what is it about phone calls specifically that fucks with even the most well-managed cases of social anxiety

[–] Frank@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

I think it's because nothing good ever comes from telecommunications. It's either your boss, bill collectors, scams, or a relative you don't like. We're all of us already frayed to the point of snapping so the sudden unexpected noise and spike of fear that you're about to be told to come in on your day off provokes a constant vigilance and preparation to flee, and after twenty years of economic failure and alienation no one retains a desire to communicate by such means.

I don't like how whenever I'm holding nuts I get a powerful urge to swallow then. I know I can't digest metal and my body will fight me on getting them down but I wanna try still

self conscious that i came off unserious on my PSL call deeper-sadness like idk they wanted me to have more organizing experience or to ask more questions or have a firmer grounding in theory or ideas about praxis or something. they did give me a resource for a way to start getting involved soon though, maybe it's in my head. sometimes worry my sensitive/anxious temperament would just make me a liability in an organizing context too though deeper-sadness

Wild to me how a hurricane will fucking tear miles and miles of a golf course to shreds and instead of being a wake up call into how much of a waste of land that is, the powers that be are shipping in people from all over to assist in the restoration efforts

Death to America

Go to for adding veggies in meals is roasted cabbage and roasted cauliflower, total for both little under 5 dollars but I can add them to any meal afterwards to round out my nutrition. I sometimes go with broccoli too but depends if I can find it, broccoli goes by fast at my nearest store.
