Americans love rules for everyone else, but not for themselves.

90% of American Facebook tier conversations about criminal justice are this image

I'm going to break it even harder!

Does a little tax fraud

So to summarise:

  • The Union Jack makes you love rules

  • Stars make you say that you hate rules

  • Full-height vertical red bars make you say that you love rules

  • Living in North America makes you hate rules

Replace "makes" with "is correlated with" because we don't have sufficient evidence to infer causality.

This sounds dangerously like a rule 🤔 🇨🇦

[–] slickgoat@lemmy.world 31 points 2 months ago (3 children)

This is more accurate than it looks like at first glance. As an Australian, we like to think that we are all larrikin individuals. Actually we are mostly law-abiding freaks even under the most ridiculous constraints.

Yep, as an Irish jaywalker, I was shocked to find not only is jaywalking not allowed, but you actually get fined. For crossing the road with no traffic.

Or even just being denied entry to a pub for racism or sexism. Its an offrnce not to leave immediately.

On the bright side, peopke clean their shit upnin parks and beaches for the most part.

Too true...

[–] trolololol@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

What about those shared bikes thrown on the water ever weekend?

[–] slickgoat@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I've seen that phenomenon all over the world . Nobody loves them.

[–] trolololol@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You say we are the most law abiding but also we are on average throwing bikes as much as anyone else. Can you pick a side please?

[–] slickgoat@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

Some people will pick a fight about anything. Ok, I'm wrong, you discovered the killer point in my entire thesis!

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's interesting to hear the pov of an Australian. From the outsider's perspective, I think you love rules given Australia's outside reputation as a nanny state.

[–] slickgoat@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Even worse, we have a nasty habit of informing on our fellows. Not for murder, or other serious crimes, but for breaking stupid council rules and such. We call it dobbing. We dobb.

How did you get the idea that Canada doesn't like rules?

[–] MyFeetOwnMySoul@lemmy.ca 21 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Visit the North. Very clear attitude towards rules.

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'm from Québec, I'm very much from the North. I know in Québec we try to make our own rules just to piss off the rest of Canada.

But, I'm just curious as to what attitude you are referring to, towards Canadians. Because they've tried to impose their rules on us for quite a long time.

[–] Rampsquatch@sh.itjust.works 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Don't refer to other Canadians as if you aren't also Canadian. Seperation didn't happen, get over it.

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You're just mad because we're the original and the best kind of Canadiens. 😘

[–] Rampsquatch@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No, actually. You can go on thinking that tho, no one can stop you.

Did I miss something?

[–] MyFeetOwnMySoul@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Was not talking about separatist angst in Quebec, so much as the disregard for the letter of the law in the territories. Generally, if you're not hurting anyone, no one cares what you're doing, and are a little pissy about other people sticking their nose in your business.

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 month ago

Ah yeah. That's true. LoL

[–] StrongHorseWeakNeigh@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's never a war crime the first time

[–] Phil_in_here@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That's our appreciation for clear rules

[–] spankinspinach@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

If anything, it makes us legal scholars - if it's not a written rule, it's a loophole in the making

[–] TheMightyCanuck@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Ever been to Alberta? It's Texas lite and half the time doesn't make sense.

We also hate rules (especially if you also say the name Trudeau)

[–] cyborganism@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago

Hahahahaha! Yeah ok I see it now.

[–] Akasazh@feddit.nl 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Dr. L. Kravitz (1989) had a thesis that the clause be inverted

[–] beejboytyson@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Huh thought he only did rock

[–] MehBlah@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

In this limited context only the British and the US are honest.

[–] Rolando@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Why are we in your commonwealth meme? And how can this not be cross-posted to !196@lemmy.blahaj.zone ?

[–] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Feel free to crosspost! (I stole this meme anyway)

[–] Cadeillac@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Are you wondering why it isn't cross-posted already, or are you trying to prevent it?

[–] Rolando@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

Uh.... whichever one is against the rules, that's the one I want!

[–] GreatAlbatross 3 points 2 months ago

This is an absolutely brilliant summary.

[–] Hupf@feddit.org 2 points 2 months ago

!196@lemmy.blahaj.zone rule?
