The first image of the Titan submersible sitting at the bottom of the ocean following its catastrophic implosion last year was shared by the US Coast Guard on Monday as investigators opened a hearing into the tragedy.

Tragedy?

Lmao fuck off CNN don't tell me how to feel about a billionaire killing themselves.

What did they need to investigate??

[–] blobjim@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

maybe whether the guy on the boat was like, "lmao ive got an idea"

Tragedy, noun

2 : a serious drama typically describing a conflict between the protagonist and a superior force (such as destiny) and having a sorrowful or disastrous conclusion that elicits pity or terror

Ocean pressure is a superior force, so it's not inaccurate.

and having a sorrowful or disastrous conclusion that elicits pity or terror

It's not sorrowful., Could be disastrous so I'll give it that. It neither elicits pity nor terror though.

You could only make a disaster/comedy about it.

Thinking of being inside an imploding submarine fills me with plenty of terror but idk what your nightmares are like I guess

[–] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

being eaten by lions would be terrifying too but you dont see me being terrified cuz im not about to go jump in the enclosure. Just like im not an idiot billionaire climbing into an amateur submarine.

[–] Aradina@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes but watching someone get mauled to death by a tiger would elicit a feeling of terror and could lead to things like nightmares about it happening to you.

[–] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 3 points 1 month ago

if it was a billionaire id watch with glee

If a homeless person dies on the street from exposure in winter - CNN would not call that a tragedy. In fact if that happened to 3 or 4 people in the same city on the same day - CNN still wouldn't call it a tragedy. Why? Such things happen and CNN and the MSM in general ignore it. The public doesn't even learn the names of the dead.

But some obscenely rich idiots go down to oppressive ocean depths in a badly tested tin can and the MSM says it's a tragedy. Why? Ocean pressure is not the reason.

You're massively overthinking an obvious joke

I thought it was cylindrical?

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 31 points 1 month ago

That's the tailfin. The non pressurized bit, iirc.

[–] redsteel@lemmygrad.ml 27 points 1 month ago

The cylinder in which porky and pals sat was the center segment that imploded and shattered. The hemispherical end cap (not pictured) and tail portion which held the support hardware (shown in the screencap) were bolted to either end of the deathtube.

This whole time I though it was a one-piece Fiberglass construction. The Boeing action-price Fiberglass wasn't even the issue, it was the glue holding them together. Winter RVs are built better than this thing

[–] Outdoor_Catgirl@hexbear.net 19 points 1 month ago

This bit wasn't the problem though. It looks like the tail cone which isn't pressurized. There's the end caps and carbon tube which had to take pressure and it's the tube that got imploded.

Wonder if any porkies would be willing to jump into a submersible deathtrap to see it up close.

[–] TrimmedDubya@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago

An endless chain of ill-fated dives to visit the previous submersible that imploded.

[–] AmericaDelendaEst@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The shadows kinda make it look like a person is kneeling in front of it
