Karl Paul August Friedrich Liebknecht, born on this day in 1871, was a German socialist politician and theorist. Originally associated with the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Liebknecht later became a co-founder with Rosa Luxemburg of both the Spartacus League and the Communist Party of Germany (KPD). Liebknecht is also known for his outspoken opposition to World War I.

The son of Wilhelm Liebknecht, one of the founders of the SPD, Karl Liebknecht trained to be a lawyer and defended many Social Democrats in political trials. He was also a leading figure in the socialist youth movement and thus became a leading figure in the struggle against militarism.

As a deputy in the Reichstag he was one of the first SPD representatives to break party discipline and vote against war credits in December 1914. He became a figurehead for the struggle against the war. His opposition was so successful that his parliamentary immunity was removed and he was improsoned.

Freed by the November revolution he immediately threw himself into the struggle and became with Rosa Luxemburg one of the founders of the new Communist Party (KPD)

In January 1919, the Spartacus League played a leading role in the Spartacist Uprising, a general strike and armed rebellion in Berlin. The uprising was crushed by the SPD government and the Freikorps (paramilitary units composed of World War I veterans). For their role in the uprising, Liebknecht and Luxemburg were both kidnapped, tortured, and murdered on January 15th, 1919.

Their contributions to European socialism are commemorated annually in Germany during the second weekend of January, an event known as the Liebknecht-Luxemburg Demonstration, or "LL-Demo" for short.

I'm been hanging out on the hextube occasionally during The Sopranos time. Mostly it's just to be social during late evening downtime before I head for bed. I always have it on mute while I do something else though. It's not a knock against those who enjoy it, I just personally can't get into crime dramas.

So how would you describe the plot and characters of The Sopranos for someone who has never heard them talk and doesn't even know their names or what they do? Wrong answers only!

It's really baffling to me when Americans are like "America is so culturally diverse Europeans will never understand" (in the sense of cultural differences between regions and states). It just vastly underestimates cultural differences within European countries. Like Italy has 34 distinct dialects. There are regions in Spain where the population doesn't speak Spanish. Like Americans do realize countries unified under a flag aren't a big homogenous blob, right? Often there are multiple spoken languages, multiple dialects of each, multiple religions and ethnicities. The fact that Americans are like oh parts of Pennsylvania have a dying language that isn't english and Minnesotans talk funny is their big point kind of proves the country is homogenous as fuck.

You bring up how many languages India or Ethiopia have and Americans will smugly say America has no official language or mention immigration, bro you are seriously missing the point.

Is there any way to download all the emojis we currently have? I know there's a github repo, but it's a few months out of date, and a handful of the images are in .svg format which straight up don't work in some places I want to post them.

You ever put off decorating for 2-3 months because you shyed away from simply measuring the pictures you need to frame? I'm realizing, with the power of white matte paper, you can get an oversized picture frame and it doesn't really take all that much effort to frame them. bateman-business-card (was supposed to be Patrick trying to build but Patrick Bateman will be the substitute emote for this class)

I just learned zoomers think Tiny Timโ€™s cover of โ€œtiptoe through the tulipsโ€ is creepy. I always thought of it as an intentionally goofy song.

15-20 minute videos about how a speedrun evolved are such good slop.

A friend awakened my childhood nightmares by playing the b-side of โ€œtheyโ€™re coming to take me away hahaโ€

Shit gave me nightmares as a kid when I stumbled upon it alone in my room at 3am. Now every time I hear it my muscles twitch as if remembering how much that shit scared me then.

I think I felt a little earthquake or aftershock, SoCal. Didnโ€™t feel the LA one earlier.
