How… can someone genuinely now know what bdsm stands for? That's honestly just baffling.

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 24 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (10 children)

Shocking but not everybody knows everything.

Pop quiz:

  • ASL (Not American Sign Language)
  • Sounding
  • TCP/IP
  • What does the K stand for when referring to the music of Mozart
  • IATA

Edit: Answers

  • Age, sex location. Old school Internet days.
  • Sounding. Urethral sounding. 😣
  • Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol. It’s one way that packets move through a network. Another would be UDP.
  • Köchel. is the person that chronologically catalogued Mozart’s music.
  • International Air Transport Association. Sets technical standards for airlines.

ASL = Age, Sex, Lemmy instance

[–] hardcoreufo@lemmy.world 13 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Age, sex and location.

Putting things into the urethra (urethra play)

No idea

No idea

You're the asshole (I joke)

Back to the original post, I'd be genuinely surprised if anyone over the age of 30 does not know what BDSM is.

[–] Wild_Mastic@lemmy.world 9 points 8 months ago (1 children)

TCP IP is an Internet protocol

[–] psud@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

IP is all internet protocol. TCP is the transmission control protocol

[–] belathus@bookwormstory.social 7 points 8 months ago

Sounding is measuring the depth of something. Sounding rods used to be a stick you put into a tank to identify how deep the liquid was in the tank, sometimes with marks on the rod. Maybe I'm just old.

[–] dependencyinjection@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Nice. Nice. Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (one of the ways traffic moves over a network). Köchel Catalogue, named after the dude that first catalogued Mozarts work. International air transport association.

[–] VaultBoyNewVegas@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

I should have got TCP/IP considering I know how to use a VPN for torrenting. That's an oops from me.

[–] Siegfried@lemmy.world 8 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

For the mozart one, i always thought it was some german word for counting... it is not. K or KV stands for the name of someone who started cataloging mozarts repertoir in composition order. So it stands for Köchel Verzeichnis (Köchel catalogue) or just Köchel..

So now that I know that the K stands for a random dude, i prefer Bach's numbering BWV, which stands for Bachswerkeverzeichnis or catalogue of bach's works or compositions

Huh… thanks. I just assumed that the BWV would follow the same logic. I appreciate you taking the time to write this. As now I know.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 7 points 8 months ago

I Am The Asshole?

the Mozart one is Köchel(-Verzeichnis) iirc

[–] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 3 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

I dunno know the Mozart thing I suppose. IATA is that international aviation organization? I think the acronym is French.

[–] problematicPanther@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

IATA is the international air transport association, I think. the t might also mean transit I guess.

[–] problematicPanther@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Australian sign language Something about measuring the depth of the ocean Internet communication protocol What? International air transport association

[–] Bearbi3@lemm.ee 1 points 8 months ago

Age Sex Location Inserting a rod of various sizes in the urethra Not sure Not sure Am I the asshole

[–] Korne127@lemmy.world 0 points 8 months ago

Yes Yes Yes No Yes

I mean true, not everyone knows everything, although I would have said that is something almost everyone knows, like the first question at Who wants to be a millionaire. But I mean it's fine if someone doesn't know that, it was just a bit baffling to me at first.

You don't know the age of the other person

[–] Xylight@lemdro.id 4 points 8 months ago

Idk people usually don't care enough to go out of their way to research a term like that

[–] TheCheddarCheese@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

it's a bit of a thing with me

[–] blind3rdeye@lemm.ee 1 points 8 months ago

No one is born knowing what those letters stand for. In fact, people don't even know what letters or words are when they are born. So obviously there must be a point in each person's life when they go from not knowing to knowing. That will happen at different time for different people, depending on who they talk to and what their interests are.

If you want to better understand how someone can not know what bdsm stands for, perhaps you should just reflect on something you've learnt recently. Anything at all. Just think about how you didn't know it, but now you do. That's how to works.
