Microsoft don't want to be in the hardware market. They've been signalling this for a while now, imo they want to become like Valve. I think this would be a huge mistake, and make their fuck ups with the xbox one look like a little hiccup in comparison.

There is basically zero chance Microsoft overtakes Steam, too. It's just too established at this point and isn't going anywhere.
