“It’s so long overdue,” Kading told the Associated Press during a recent interview. “People have been yearning for him to be arrested for a long time. It’s never been unsolved in our minds. It’s been unprosecuted.”

Glad they stayed committed to this and brought some closure to the case (assuming it sticks). Not hip hop’s biggest fan but Tupac was brilliant. The industry might’ve been a different place today.

I don't think so. Not to be cynical, but I think we overestimate the potential impact of those who die young. In fact, I think their impact is almost always made larger because they died young.

Like many other once-great artists, Tupac, were he alive today, would probably be retired after doing a few years in Vegas with dwindling audience numbers.

He probably would have gotten a reality show and maybe been on stage at the Superbowl for a nostalgic throwback act, but beyond that he would have probably faded into history.

I say the same about Nirvana, Amy Winehouse, definitely Nipsy Hustle, and the others who passed too soon.

Sorry, I know it's kind of grim and I'm definitely open to a good counter-argument here.

Tupac was also political, he wasn't just some artist. He's like if Killer Mike was 50 times as famous. I think you're right about how death transforms someone's legend, but I think Tupac was set to be as famous as Snoop Dogg is now. Accept with the political drive to be a cultural revolutionary. I doubt he would have faded into history like he was ja rule or some shit.

Do rappers often get Vegas residencies?

[–] Wolf_359@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

That's a good counter argument.

I suppose you would get the rapper equivalent of the Vegas residency. Not sure what that is.
