They're named after a town in Dorset, so must be pretty common, but I'd never heard of them before.

Holy shit! This explains a lot. Stayed overnight in Derby. Had a fever that night and sudden back pain. Woke up covered in bites that needed antibiotics to clear up.

That sounds more like bed bugs. No reported cases of blandford fly in derby, confirmed or unconfirmed.

Where were the bites? All over? It’s rare to get a blandford bite above the lower leg.
