Communities made around hating a specific thing are always awful.

Except FuckCars because that's really just pro-urbanism.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 31 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Except FuckCars

Unfortunately, the community is still populated and run by some Grade A types.

Like, the sentiment is good, but you still end up with people who have no communication skills piling in.

Me: cars are pretty mandatory in cities like L.A. and rural areas

FuckCars: you're literally worse than Hitler

[–] grue@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago

Hey, I'm trying my best!

[–] morrowind@lemmy.ml 15 points 5 days ago (2 children)

fuckCars has become weird enough that fuckcarscirclejerk is now a top-tier subreddit

[–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 27 points 5 days ago

Oh, I just mean the lemmy community, I don't use Reddit.

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 1 points 5 days ago

Has it? Back when I was on Reddit (before the API debacle) it was one of my absolute favourites.

They could change the name to LessCars, would seem less agressive

[–] Anticorp@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

But they're incredibly aggressive, so the current name fits them better

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 20 points 5 days ago (1 children)

They have no interest in appearing less aggressive. Getting to be aggressive is like the highlight of their day.

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 7 points 5 days ago

Hopefully a less agressive community can emerge. There is actually !publictransport@slrpnk.net

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 12 points 5 days ago (2 children)

The name isn't "no cars" or "never cars". There are some rare use cases for personal automobiles. But the ways cars operate in our society today? Fuck 'em.

[–] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago

Right up the tailpipe!

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 13 points 5 days ago (1 children)

US society (IIRC you're a US citizen) definitely is car centric. The issue people have with FuckCars is how it puts the responsibility of the situation to the cars (and their owners) rather than the policies leading to that situation.

!publictransport@slrpnk.net could maybe a less "fuck them" alternative

[–] Zagorath@aussie.zone 13 points 5 days ago (2 children)

But !fuckcars@lemmy.world isn't just about public transport. It's also about cycling. And walking. And building cities such that walking or cycling are actually viable, not just because there are good bike paths/footpaths, but also because paths are well-shaded, roads are narrow and easy to cross, and the distances you have to travel are lower because density is higher and localities are mixed-use with local businesses. It's about all the ways that motonormativity is shit.

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Hence !FewerCars

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (2 children)

No. Every car should be reduced by 10% annually.

[–] Emperor 7 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I misread that as "anally", but that would do too.

[–] alcoholicorn@lemmy.ml 8 points 5 days ago

!dragonsFuckingCars@pawb.social

[–] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Xeno's automobile!

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Well spotted, as you know English isn't my first language 😅

[–] Emperor 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Oh indeed, it's a classic pedant's gotcha that I didn't think you'd mind.

[–] Blaze@feddit.org 2 points 4 days ago

Definitely not!
