Imagine paying money to see 2 fucking ads before a video.

[–] skittle07crusher@sh.itjust.works 28 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As another reply said already

Imagine cable tv! (in the US at least, and, it seems, Canada, too)

It is so absurd until you realize people already accepted that shit.. wtf!!!

[–] Black616Angel@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Yes, but this is german and in Germany most TV is free with ads or paid without ads.

[–] Anivia@feddit.org 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

No, most TV in Germany is either paid and with ads (ARD, ZDF, or private stations with HD+) , or free and with even more ads (RTL, Pro7 etc. in SD resolution). Paid TV without ads (Sky) is only used by a small minority

And the few ad supported stations that are free are only free if you use Satellite TV, half of Germany still uses cable TV and has to pay a monthly fee to Vodafone for those, in addition to our broadcasting fees that everyone has to pay

[–] Black616Angel@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 weeks ago

Okay, it is possible to get them for free (except the ÖR which I forgot, because the fee is mandatory for each household) which is what I meant but yes, there are lots of ads, but american TV also has I would say as many ads.

Source: also German

Its like going to the local cinema, ads before the movie.

[–] gmgmgm@lemmy.world 33 points 2 weeks ago (6 children)

I went to a Regal Cinema for the first time a few months ago and they played 20 minutes of ads that began at the advertised movie start times. Insane.

[–] thisbenzingring@lemmy.sdf.org 16 points 2 weeks ago

It's been that way forever, I remember looking at my watch and thinking about it in the 90s

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Was that the first time you've ever been to the movies? It's been like that for decades. Always go in 20 minutes after the start time.

[–] gmgmgm@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Last time I went it was in black and white and accompanied by an orchestra

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 6 points 2 weeks ago

I apologize, Captain Colonel Settlements.

[–] Ganbat@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I went to my local theater expecting this and ended up missing the first ten minutes of Venom 3. I guess the moral of the story is... Shop local?

[–] Klear@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

I went to my local theater expecting this and ended up missing the first ten minutes of Venom 3

Win win.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

It's always been that way. Previews interspersed with coke ads.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca -2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's stupid. Why would you go to the movies just to walk out before it even started?

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca -2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

If it’s past the start time and it’s not on then why would I expect it to come on?

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Because you're not a five year old.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

We have different ideas of what start times mean

I do the same with sports

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Reality trumps idealism.
You're wasting money and time refusing things you know are going to happen.

[–] can@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

And that's always been bs. But at least then I can get tmy seats online and show up "late"

[–] ElCanut@jlai.lu 6 points 2 weeks ago

You just described Amazon Prime TV

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago

Imagine paying money to watch YouTube.

[–] Resonosity@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Imagine not using NewPipe, which has no ads and can play music in the background while you use other apps simultaneously (Samsung only feature I've heard, but still)

[–] Black616Angel@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 weeks ago

I use vanced, but NewPipe is also great.

Or imagine installing uBlock Origin and not seeing ads at all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

YouTube really promoted uBlock more than uBlock could even promote itself

[–] Faresh@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

Don't use ublock, use ublock origin, the latter is open-source and trustworthy.

[–] greencactus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Thank you for the correction! I meant origin and forgot to write it :)
