this one seemed to be a fortified wine with a vitamin mix added (or whatever passed for vitamins back then) but some modern ones have caffeine for that extra spice

I thought it would be something like vermouth or some kind of aromatized wine, like Barolo Chinato or Retsina. Back until relatively recently those kinds of wines were supposed to be good for you because they had herbs and other alcaloids (nothing crazy, only quinine), and drinking wine with every meal was a thing.
