I was gifted a 4K bluray player for Christmas. Whopper!

I immediately bought my favourite movie of all time - Aliens. I only got around to watching it recently and HOLY COW the detail. I grew up watching it on a VHS that I recorded off the TV.

I'm looking for some recommendations for things to visually blow me away. I was thinking of Interstellar, but I did watch that recently enough.

All suggestions welcome and thank you!

edit: Some absolute bangers of recommendations here, many of which I wouldn't have considered. Thanks folks!

Widely regarded as the greatest British film of all time, and making its 4K debut, director Carol Reed’s noir The Third Man, brilliantly scripted by Graham Greene – and set to Anton Karas’s evocative zither score – is a justly celebrated classic further enhanced by Orson Welles in one of his most iconic roles. After writer Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) arrives in post-WWII Vienna to meet his old friend Harry Lime (the incomparable Welles), he discovers Lime has been killed in a suspicious accident. As the accident’s witnesses disappear, the sardonic Major Calloway (Trevor Howard) and Lime’s mistress, Anna Schmidt (Alida Valli), complicate Martins’s search for answers regarding his friend’s death. But will his relentless curiosity lead him to discoveries about Lime he’d rather not know?

Director Fede Álvarez, says he run out of time to get the look of the character Rook completed to his satisfaction. For the home release, he's apparently spent more money correcting it which according to him, leans more towards the practical animatronic than the CGI face.

With over 18 years of history, Blu-ray technology was designed to take CDs and DVDs to the next level. Not only can they hold significantly more data than their predecessors, but Blu-ray discs even let you view high-quality (and 3D content) that often are closer to the experience of watching in theaters than the compressed versions you'll find elsewhere. Not to be confused with DVDs, Blu-ray discs use a different kind of laser technology, which eventually became the industry standard for film and movies by 2008. In part, this is due to the fact that its players could be backwards-compatible with DVDs, but not the other way around.

...

Although some things can (and have) lasted the test of time, the natural progression of most technology is that something becomes obsolete when a newer, better, or more efficient model comes along. In terms of the Blu-ray discs, there are several things that have pushed them to obsoletion.

If you have a physical media collection for movies, TV shows, games, music, or something else, you’ve probably wondered “do I already have this?” while shopping. There’s an easy way to solve this problem: make a simple list.

There are many apps and services intended for tracking your collection of movies, games, music, and other media across digital and physical formats. Those are useful tools, especially the ones with the ability to add extra metadata, but they aren’t strictly necessary. If you just want to know what you already own, so you can quickly check you aren’t about to buy the same movie or game again, you can go for a more basic solution.

Perched on the end of a row of terraces in a small town is one of the last DVD rental shops in the UK.

In 2022, there were thought to be as few as 10 remaining.

For 43 years Steve Webber has been behind the desk of Northgate Video, but how has he kept going amid the demise of chain retailers like Blockbuster and the rise of streaming services?

Sitting on the corner of Northgate Street in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, it is a blink-and-you'll-miss-it shop.

But for those who head inside, it is like stepping back in time as customers are greeted by walls of shelves packed with thousands of DVDs for sale and rent. And a movie is always playing on a TV by the window.

Mr Webber, 72, says while he has some regulars, he gets passing trade from people intrigued by the idea a video or DVD rental shop still exists.

"It's just nice to see people come in and say, 'Oh wow, I didn't realise places like this existed'," he said.

"I had a lad come in months ago, a real film buff, and he was gobsmacked by it."

...

"Back in the early days it was just VHS tapes, which cost me £50 or £60."

He would then rent them out for £2 a night, rising to about £2.50 in the early 2000s.

One thing never changed though, the most popular rentals were always new releases or horror films - "anything not available on TV".

The most popular items over the years have included the lesser-known Zombie Flesh Eaters alongside hits like Apocalypse Now, Mad Max, Life of Brian and Star Trek.

...

He still offers DVD rentals but said the market was "pretty much non-existent" with the focus now on sales.

"I've got a few regulars come in every week and a few come in randomly every month or so, or parents bringing in kids for special occasions.

"But it's mainly sales, I've got 2,000 to 3,000 ex-rentals up for sale for £1 a time and I pride myself on being able to get pretty much anything anyone wants.

...

However, the rise of platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime has hit the business harder, especially in the last 12-18 months, with the rise of films being produced by the streaming giants.

"It's got to the stage now a new film will come out on Netflix and Amazon Prime before it actually comes out on DVD.

"Back in the day we always had a six-month window before it came out but now it's an impossible situation.

"Now they do things principally for Netflix or Amazon and then they come out on DVD," he said.

...

Mr Webber said, although trade had slowed down, he had never put a definitive date on when to shut up shop.

"I keep saying I'll close at the end of the year, then the end of the financial year.

"Then something will happen, it will pick up again."

He said he would keep going for as long as people were still enjoying it.

"To put it bluntly, the money I make out of this is what they call my beer money.

"Unless streaming services all go down or the world goes to pot, then I shall still be here. I shall be the last man standing," he said.

As streaming and downloadable media increase their dominance, Blu-ray players are being discontinued across the industry, which means that sooner or later you won't find any players on the shelf should your current one give up the ghost. So what now?

In December 2024, LG announced that it would be ceasing production of Blu-ray players, joining Samsung and Oppo who both left the market about half a decade earlier.

LG was one of the last great holdouts making players, but now only Sony and Panasonic are left, and while having fewer players to share the market makes it more viable for them to stay in for a while, I suspect it's only a matter of time before the remaining big brands pull the plug.

...

So there's no reason to rush out and do something financially inadvisable. Instead, take this as a medium-term warning that those of us who like collecting media are on notice. If you want your disc library to remain playable for as long as possible, you'll have to do something about it soon.

Luckily, this isn't for grain removal but to fix mistakes that still bugged Fincher.

Fincher got together with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff and told her how AI was used to achieve the restoration. Fincher mentions the scene in a bar where Detectives Somerset and Mills chat about the case. Turns out, the scene had a teeny tiny mistake in it, but Fincher is known as a bit of a perfectionist, so it probably bothered him.

“In this case, there was this unasked-for and unearned camera pan where a character moved, and then the camera panned over to follow them but followed them late and overshot them and ended up seeing more of the bar than was intended,” Fincher described. A character’s jacket proved to be a real problem in trying to fix the shot, but now, with the help of AI, Fincher was able to get the shot he wanted on the new version.

“So we took three or four different shots from earlier, which had a jacket in them that we liked, and then we input that, and then we had it spit back out AI, and then took the background from where the camera landed and just composited them together.”

Easy peasy! Fincher seems to have also found other uses for AI than just the one bar scene.

“There were shots that I didn’t even realize where I would consider today to be unusably out of focus, and some of those things we were able to go in, make mattes of the section that we wanted, and use AI to at least get the focus in the eyes to be on the soft side, but not completely useless,” the director told Collider.

The monstrous Godzilla is colossal in more ways than one, dominating screens since 1954. One of the most recognizable reptilian figures in cultural history, fans lap up the spectacle of this kaiju (a Japanese term for large monster) towering over urban landscapes and battling with other untamed beasts. In 1989, one of the weirdest movies in the genre was released, Godzilla vs. Biollante, becoming a firm franchise favorite for many fans..

Director Kazuki Ōmori delved deep into his imagination for Godzilla vs. Biollante. The film proudly displays some of the coolest special effects of the franchise, one of its strangest antagonists, and some great social commentary. It's been a challenge for anyone to track down a watchable physical copy of the movie, and anything on streaming usually has poorly translated subtitles, but that all ends next spring. Audiences will be able to get their hands on the 4K restoration of the film (with new, properly handled subtitles and a 5.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack), so they can judge how wonderfully eccentric it is for themselves.

...

Along with the restoration, The Criterion Collection release is stuffed with special features as usual:

There's a new audio commentary featuring film historian Samm Deighan, host of the podcast Eros + Massacre and coeditor of the book Revolution in 35mm. There's also a making-of program from 1993 featuring director Kazuki Ōmori and special-effects director Koichi Kawakita, among others. There are deleted special effects, TV spots, and a short documentary from 1993 about the Biollante and Super X2 vehicle concepts.

Robert Eggers has confirmed that “Nosferatu” will be released on 4K Blu-Ray in an extended cut. Is it the near 3-hour version that was test screened earlier in the year? Quite possibly.

In 2023, I read the script and after having seen the released cut, all I can say is that Eggers left a lot of footage out of version we saw in theaters.

With 2024 coming to a close, I’m looking back on everything that happened with 4K Blu-ray over the past year. Needless to say, it’s been a year of ups and downs. We’ve seen some excellent releases, especially from independent distributors. We’ve also seen brands and retailers exit the 4K Blu-ray market, whether it’s selling discs or players.

...

But 2024 really has been a rollercoaster year for us 4K Blu-ray fans. There have been reports of increasing disc sales from major UK retailers, and then elsewhere you read that the state of physical media is in decline and it’s all very doom and gloom. So what did happen in the world of 4K Blu-ray in 2024?

...

4K Blu-ray and physical media in general has faced a year of highs and lows in 2024 and while I’m hopeful for its future in 2025, I know there is still uncertainty. Physical media sales overall remain on the decline and despite rising prices, streaming services are still the main way people watch movies and TV shows.

But, 4K Blu-ray is the best way to enjoy movies on your home theater system and the more people get to experience this wonderful format, the more popular it will become.

Any highlights or low points for you in 2024?
