China’s safety record in other energy sectors is poor. This is presumably not on purpose. What reason is there to believe it will be better at managing nuclear?

The science teacher’s comment is far removed from the evidence presented in that link:

with a can of diet soft drink containing 200 or 300 mg of aspartame, an adult weighing 70kg would need to consume more than 9–14 cans per day to exceed the acceptable daily intake

There are a lot more old people with diabetes and heart disease than dumbasses with broken bones.

I’ve reviewed my doorbell footage and our lot seem to just pull them by the handle straight to the back of the lorry, so handle out is definitely easier for them. I didn’t see anyone checking in the bin.

Edit: On further review, the bins go into the mechanism at the back of the lorry with the handle out (ie, they push them from behind into the lifter), so it might actually be easiest to have the bin sideways with the handle facing towards them as they walk down the street. That way they can just walk up to it and start pushing it towards the lorry.

I mean, “marshmallow” has a more interesting derivation than most of the other words I’ve seen so far.

Althaea officinalis, the marsh mallow or marshmallow, is a species of flowering plant indigenous to Europe, Western Asia and North Africa, which is used in herbalism and as an ornamental plant. A confection made from the root since ancient Egyptian times evolved into today's marshmallow treat.

Steam engines are more complicated than people seem to think. There’s more to it than just boiling some water and voila! They’re pretty much useless without a governor. How many people know how to make this crucial component?

If you already own a phone, a pen and notebook is an extra cost.

I don’t run out of pens because I record meetings with my phone or computer and get Otter AI to transcribe them. I already own a phone so it’s even cheaper than a pen or a notebook. And, here’s a pro tip, I keep it charged and have a power bank.

Pens need ink. Notepads need empty pages.

To be fair, it’s easy to make up examples that fit the anti-woke trope — just name any movie, game or TV show with strong female/non-straight/minority characters that didn’t achieve record sales. That Scooby-Doo show, She Hulk, the Cleopatra thing, etc.

That is definitely not true.
