You know they're scamming when they think saying 'open source' enough will make us forget it fails to include a libre software licence text file.

some of our components

Blatant scam. That's not an app. The app is anti-libre software.

Anti-libre software, we do NOT control it. It fails to include a libre software licence text file, like GPL.

How many of your contacts have you helped leave WhatsApp?

⁉️ WhatsApp is anti-libre software. We do NOT control it. It withholds a libre software license text file, like GPL.

Deleting the only way to reach someone online breaks your influence.

example.org

A link and only one link, so (1) they see it's an app, not some random word or typo, (2) they can download it without searching, and (3) they don't have multiple choice–they don't need to do any thinking or research. Remove everything stopping them.

anti-libre software.

Never say privacy, they've heard it all before (from you, no doubt). Say something different.

We do NOT control it.

Make it simple and direct. Think of the most retarded person you know and break it down in a way they would understand. Think about every angle it could be misunderstood.

It withholds

Libre software is normal, default. Anti-libre software is cringe, weird, dangerous. Act like it. Also, humans care less about getting and more about losing stuff.

libre software license text file

Show them what to check for, for themselves, easily, obvious. Later, show them how to spread these ideas. Then, show them how to show others how to spread these ideas, make more of you.

GPL

A keyword for them to web search for more, with better results than more complex terms like AGPL or misleading terms like 'open source'.

Don't waste a word.

Lastly, make yourself someone everyone wants to talk to.

How much are we getting paid to shill proprietary file formats?

For example, on WhatsApp, use the whole 25 character limit for profile name. Examples:

Bob Moved To Signal.org

Alice MovedTo Signal.org

CharlieMovedTo Signal.org

Say Signal.org, not Signal, because they won't know it's an app.

Use your about section too. Same on Discord, Steam, Instagram, etc.

Automatic calendar synchronisation with no server and no cloud?

Not just locally on the device! There must be an error when calling or texting the number.

Data must work for internet for Signal, VoIP, etc.

This is for a UK PAYG SIM.

There should be no way for anyone to demand my number, or for me to leak it, or doing so should be irrelevant as it does not work.

Need at least the camera, if not that plus a microphone and speakers, not the lock or bell.

Libre Software (Obviously) + End-to-End Encryption

Small and easy to hide, so the camera isn't stolen, attacked or bypassed.

Update I have come to a decision. Thank you to all who contributed suggestions. Please feel free to keep the discussion going to help others.

Jitsi Meet and Matrix are missing system-wide/background push-to-talk (PTT) (to replace Discord).

  • Tell Jitsi -> github.com/jitsi/jitsi-meet-electron/issues/210

  • Tell Matrix -> github.com/element-hq/element-web/issues/15284

  • Tell Element Call -> call.element.io (Settings > Feedback)

  • Tell SimpleX -> github.com/simplex-chat/simplex-chat/issues/2398

Alternatives (obviously must be cross-platform end-to-end encrypted libre software)?

Lemmy is software anyone can develop and everyone controls, libre software, which makes it very hard for Lemmy to abuse us. To keep it this way, share the ideas of software freedom.

  1. Always check its software license: always check it is libre software (video guide here).
  2. Also avoid service as a software substitute.
  3. Libre software plus decentralisation [federation or peer-to-peer] is ideal.
  4. Remember, 'open source' misses the point.

If we focus on warning against individual apps, we must repeat our time and effort everytime new malware appears. So, target a common property: its software license.

With proprietary software, we are not the user, we are the used.
